I see James and Susan on the 1860 census as you stated but 1850 census finds James aged 18 and living in the home of Charles Schusler. Again James is shown as born in Virginia and his occupation was Tanner. Same as in 1860. I have to admit to a lot of confusion here as well. From the 1850 census it would not look as if James was married at the time. If he was then his wife and children did not make the census unless those children shown in 1860 were not his and possibly were not Mattingly's. Actually, he would have been only about 14 when the 13 year old Charles A. was born. None of the three children with Susan during 1880 were present in 1860 but that's as expected. I've hunted in vain for signs of this family during 1870. Apparently James died between 1870 and 1880 but his family should have been someplace in 1870.
