Fr. Blaine, You're right about Msg. H. E. Mattingly publishing the St. Joseph's baptisms. This morning I found them on the Columbus Ohio Diocese' Web site in their entirety introduced as: Early Baptism Records of St. Joseph's Near Somerset (1818-1834) Commentary, translation, interpretation, and arrangement copyright 2003 by the Catholic Record Society - Diocese of Columbus. The records presented below are the earliest Catholic baptismal records of Ohio. They were written and kept at the first Catholic parish in the state, St. Joseph Parish near Somerset in Perry County, but they include ceremonies conducted throughout southern, central, and eastern Ohio by the Dominican priests (and a few by diocesan priests) on their journeys through the wilderness. The first transcription of these records was published in the very first Bulletin of the Catholic Record Society in January, 1975 and continuing into the 1976 issues. This was a devoted effort by the late Monsignor Herman E. Mattingly, who apparently worked from the original book, at that time located in the archives of the Dominican Fathers at their House of Studies in Washington, D.C. This was a tremendous undertaking, for the book is a confusing mass of records in different scripts and in different arrangements, quite difficult to read in places, with records scattered in odd chronological order, and with some records repeated and in the process changed, sometimes with additional information, sometimes with less, and sometimes with different dates. Using two microfilms, one with a sharper image and the other with better contrast, and using prints from these films that enhanced their legibility, and having the advantage of the first transcription and the index, it has been possible to prepare this transcription more accurately. It includes not only corrections of names and dates, but also additional records that were missed in the first effort. Therefore this reading should be considered to completely replace the one published in our Bulletin in 1975 and 1976. The URL for the full subject index for the site is: http://www.colsdioc.org/ Click Offices,>Record Society>then Publications and scroll down. St. Joseph's is the only one with a link to a whole transcription of baptismal records online. The others are offered for sale at $1.00 per newsletter listed sent snail mail per their membership form. Knowing Rev. HEM's work as well as most of us do, we are aware that he made minimal errors but I struggle greatly with the issue of the parentage of Chidley Matthew Mattingly. It seems quite possible, even probable, that William was married at least three times. 1st to Sarah Childey Matthews, 2nd to someone named Mary and then 3rd to Anna Maria Dugan. It was apparently customary to sometimes name a child after a previous deceased spouse. Maybe this was the case with Chidley Matthew. The difficulty we have, besides the absence of any substantial evidence, is that Sarah reportedly didn't die until 1831. If that date is incorrect then a new set of possibilities open including the possibility that William and Anna were married earlier than thought and that Sarah may have died much sooner than believed at present. I haven't located William on the census of 1820 yet although he was supposed to have been in Ohio as early as about 1812. He is found in Muskingum during 1830 and 1840. During 1830 he had one male between the ages of 5 and 10 and one between 15 and 20. William was shown 40 to 50. By 1840, William had 2 males 10 to 15, one 15 to 20, and himself 50 to 60. Appearing in Muskingum with William were Joseph 30 to 40, Charles 30 to 40, and Michael 20 to 30. By these accounts it looks to me that William had at least 4 sons by 1840 unless he had remarried and had children which belonged to his second wife and her previous husband in the home. I think Joseph and Michael were both sons of John and Onea Arnold, while Charles was a son of Samuel and Elinora Durbin. William should have had a son around somewhere between the ages of 20 and 30 but so far I haven't found one unless it was Chidley M. Mallengly (manner spelled on census) over in Licking, Muskingum County between ages of 20 and 30. With a name like Chidley Matthew, it seems to me that this has got to have been William's son, but certainly maybe not, the son of Sarah.
William, the answer may lie in the records of the tombstone inscriptions or the burial records below, but unfortunately they are not online. The newsletters listed by month and year below indicate that they have been transcribed.
