Does anyone know who this Henry is Henry Matney (First_Last) Regiment Name 4 U.S.C. Inf. Side Union Company E Soldier's Rank_In Private Soldier's Rank_Out Private Alternate Name Henry/Mattingly Notes Film Number M589 roll 57 African American War Memorial
Henry Mattingly was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his valor in combat in the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia in 1864 as a part of the Union forces. He is shown in Hardin County on the 1880 census with wife named Manda (likely a nickname). All sources do not show the children named Thomas Green or Ellen (Thomas does not appear with the family on the 1870 census of St. Mary's, Marion County, Kentucky). It is possible that they died young as they do not appear on the census. One source shows the child named Amelda, as Amanda Benedict. Could she have become a Nun and used this name? Re: J. R. Powell. The Marriage Index shows his wedding as 4-8-1867. Son of Ignatius Mattingly and Eliza Madden.
