I had only heard of one Jasper and that was Jasper Ray. There is a second listed with Rootsweb by Howard Sappington (Wonder if Howard watches this site and may help us out here). This Jasper appears to have been about the correct age to have been Clayton's father although Howard does not list his birthdate or a wife. The father of this Jasper was Albert Benton Mattingly and mother was Nannie Cohoon. At least one son, Ira Lee, was born in 1890 in Missouri. At least they were headed in the right direction. Social Security does list a Jasper R. Mattingly, born 2-7-1892 and dying in 1985 with SSA issued in Montana. This almost could be Jasper Ray but I show him as born 10-22-1891 in Louisville, Ky. and dying in 1955. The only wife I have seen reported for Jasper Ray was Lillian Bishop and no child named Clayton has appeared for them.
