This one is a long shot, but Ignatius George also had a son named John, born about 1832. This one went to Illinois with his mother and married Catherine McMannis in Clay County, Illinois on 2-19-1856. Could he have returned to Kentucky and married a 2nd time? I only have the 1850 census records for Illinois and haven't checked later records so can't verify if he remained in Illinois after 1867 or not. He and Catherine had at least two children according to reports: Jeremiah 1857 and Mary A. in 1867 (both born in Illinois). Could John's date of birth be off on the 1850 census? For example some that I haven't traced: Martin Mattingly, Sr. and Helen Thompson had a son named John, born 1834; Joseph and Elizabeth (son of Ignatius Mattingly and Mary Daft) had a son named John, born about 1836; there was John B. born about 1836 to James and Mary A. (James was son of John Mattingly and Mary Wimsatt); there was also John Rowan, born 1833 (son of John L. in line of Jeremiah), who reportedly died in 1849 but was on the 1850 census(may have died later); in the line of John Townley, Frederick had a son named John born about 1835; in Cezar's line, Leonard Mattingly and Nancy Spencer had a son named John, born 1831; John H., born about 1836 (son of James and grandson of Barnett); John Henry, 1835, son of James Mattingly and Cecelia Cussick; John Henry 1836, son of James Mattingly and Jane Riggs; John Lewis born 1836, son of Lewis H. Mattingly and Lucinda Shircliff. That's it for the unknown John's in my files (that I found anyway). I can't help but mention John Reece! Has anyone ever identified his parents? *********************** Pretty sure the George you found in the 1850 and 1880 Daviess Co, KY census records is George Austin Mattingly who I show as the son of Basil Mattingly and Monica Miles.. Since his son John b. 1832 is still with him in 1880 and your John Mattingly has a separate listing in the 1880 census, I don't think he is the son of George Austin. Don't believe in this case there is a duplicate listing for John b. 1832. Additionally, George Austin Mattingly's son John b. 1832 is also listed with him in the 1860 and 1870 Daviess Co, KY census records and seems to have never married. So consistentley from 1850 thru 1880, George Austin Mattingly is listed with a son John. Think we can eliminate him as your John Mattingly for sure. A big find would be to come across a John Mattingly abt age 18 in the 1850 census that we cannot identify or in the 1860 Census age 28 that we cannot identify. I know we found your John Mattingly in the 1870 and 1880 Daviess Co, KY census records of Daviess Co ages 38 and 48 respectively with your Ggrandfather Charles ages 2 and 12, but cannot recall if we ever identified him in the 1850 or 1860 census records. Don't think so. John Oswald Mattingly is of Daviess Co, KY but he was b. in 1851 and died in 1920 and is buried in St Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery in St Joseph, Daviess Co, KY. His father was George Washington Mattingly, a different family. George Washington Mattingly is also buried in St Alphonsus.
