    1. Re: [MATTINGLY] Clement Mattingly CORRECTION
    2. Ooh! Now this is fun. The Clement that is in SMC is pretty obviously the original Clement Mattingly. The Clement Mattingly in PGC and the one in Washington Co, KY, I think are the same person. There is a Clement Mattingly in PGC in the 1776 Tax Records (this record was considered a early census of MD because it accounted for all people living in MD at that time). Clement is listed as 28 y.o. which would place him being born c. 1738. This Clement is also listed with another male in the household age 11, Frances Mattingly (female) aged 44 y.o. and various other females whose ages I cannot remember (18, 17, 11, 3, maybe? - I'll double check). I have spectulated that this Frances might be Frances Ford Mattingly. widow of Robert of James of Thomas II. Robert died in 1776 and may not have been on the census. But I'm not sure who Clement is. He is unlikely to be the son of Robert since he was born in 1737 and he is unlikely to be Frances' son since she would only have been 16 y.o. when he was born (not impossible but unlikely). The children may have been the various children of Robert's (by the way Robert was in PGC in 1772 as giving testimony in court) - Charles was born c. 1764, Katherine c. 1766, Gabriel c. 1770 and Anastasia c. 1772. These are children that we know of and there may have been more. This puts us back to who this Clement was. Interestingly the only child of James of Thomas II still alive in 1776 would have been James b.c. 1728. Thomas died in 1762, Peter in 1774, John in 1773. Perhaps he is a son of Thomas or Peter. Perhaps they are all under one roof since the breadwinners were all dead? Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA
