Here's a good one to chew on. I have become intriqued with the issue of who was Henry, the son of Zachariah Mattingly, Jr. I, like most folks, carry Henry as born about 1810 and married to Jane Rebecca Burroughs on 8-20-1839. This may be inaccurate information. A booklet by Theodore L. Brownyard and recently sent to me by Tom Hubscher (a descendant of Henry Mattingly), raises the possibility that we have the wrong Henry. There were two on the census of 1850; one in St. Mary's County and married to Jane and a 2nd in Charles County and married to Eliza. This Eliza was Elizabeth Sophia (Dent) Higdon, whose first husband was Benedict L. Higdon. What really leads me to believe this Henry of Charles County was actually the son of Zachariah Mattingly, Jr. is mention of the following deed (which I have not yet seen but hope someone may have at their disposal or can locate): Charles COunty Deeds GWC #2, page 37, made 30 November 1864 by Ignatius Pike which conveyed the tract of land called "Sarum or Old Sarum" (about 1,000 acres) to Zorah S. Mattingly, Benjamin H. Mattingly, and Ann C. Mattingly, children and heirs of Henry Mattingly, deceased. In the deed, Henry is called "Henry of Zac" meaning son of Zachariah. The Henry of St. Mary's County is referred to as "Henry of John". I don't know which John yet. The writings of Mr. Brownyard also contain transcribed copies of the wills of the Henry above, and Zachariah, Jr. (will proved 1-17-1837). Judith has already posted the will of Zachariah and I will post the will of Henry tonight on a separate post.
