I'm glad that Mary brought up the issue of John Baptist Mattingly and the Virginia Mattingly's because it is possible that J. B. is listed incorrectly. I certainly am not prepared to debate that idea and continue to carry him as married to Dykeander and as a son of John B. and ELizabeth Venable because I've seen nothing that would convince me otherwise. However, sometime ago I ran across the following from a fellow researcher: "Will Book C, page 24, Fairfax County, Virginia - James Mattingly was witness to will of James Robertson, Sr." "James Mattingly, bc 1760, entered Rev. War service in 1780 from Alexandria, DC (now Va), served in the 3rd Va. Regt., pensioned in 1818 in DC. 1820 residence Fairfax, Va., age 60 and wife 58. In 1841, he lived in DC where he moved to be near children who lived in Georgetown. Had a younger brother, Thomas who lived in DC (who was a Justice of the Peace in 1848)." "...further states that he was in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse and some skirmishes near Richmond and below Petersburgh; that he belonged to Virginia Line and date of his original declaration was June 16, 1815, and the number of his certificate was 5206. He names his wife, Elizabeth, 58/9, bc 1761; two daughters: Nancy c34 bc 1786; Massie 18; bc1802; and one son: Lewis 28, bc 1792." >From what I've seen, John Mattingly (married Dykeander) had a younger brother named James, born about 1760. Could this be the same James? I don't have an answer but that's the way I currently carry him.
