This appears to have been John Thomas Mattingly, son of Barnett Mattingly and Priscilla Cash, if you're looking at the 1880 census. He was married at least four times from all I can tell. Wives: Married Delilah Keeling on 11-19-1851; Mary Elizabeth Keeling on 5-10-1855; Rosia A. E. after 1875; and Catherine Hays in 1887. I haven't seen a marriage record for Rosia but they were certainly together in 1880. The James you mention was a brother named James Jeremiah.
