    3. The Peter Mattingly who married Claire Johnson was born about 1835 if you consider the census records and he appears on the 1850 census with his parents, Sylvester and Nancy Ann Graves Mattingly in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Peter himself was married before 1860 and appears on the census with his wife but no children. The census index for 1880, Leonardtown, Md. names Peter as Robert H. but the actual census was impossible for me to read and I suspect the transcriber simply wrote whatever they thought it read. I have seen nothing to prove that this Peter Mattingly's middle name was Haverman and the nearest I have seen was the "H" on the 1880 census. I too, carry him in that manner but continue to seek verification. That his middle initial was "H" seems certain enough but who knows at this point. It seems very possible that someone upon finding a death record for a Peter Haverman Mattingly in 1919, simply assumed that this was the same man. At the same time though, I have to state that a search of the 1850 census of Maryland shows no John Mattingly with a son named Peter. Sarah however, is on the census with children - Mary J. 13; Ann 12; Peter 8; Ignatius W. 5; Catherine 4; and Mary 3 months. Perhaps her husband had died by this time? On this same census, Sylvester appears (name spelled Mattingley) with his family in St. Mary's as follows: John 27; Mary A. 26; Jane H. 21; Peter 15; Elizabeth 15; and Amanda A. 12. It's quite obvious that we have at least two Peter Mattingly's but the one who married Claire was born about 1835/36. My own conclusion, at this time, is to drop the middle name of Peter Mattingly, born about 1835 until more can be determined on him. Perhaps someone has more information?
