    1. [MATTINGLY] Mind Twister
    2. William R Mattingly
    3. I'm gonna beat this dead horse because I can't find Charles Fowler Mattingly during 1820. If this isn't him in Breckinridge, and it doesn't appear to be, where was he? There's a Charles in Washington County (also over age 45) who may have been a son of Jeremiah and Sarah Shanks (Jeremiah was in Washington County during this time also). I believe I see two of Charles Fowler's brothers in Washington; Ignatius, Jr. and Basil. I don't find Henry and certainly none of the girls. Anyone know where Charles Fowler was at? I have thought too that maybe I have a transcription problem and recorded some ages wrong but the children don't match either so if I recorded the adult ages wrong I must have recorded the number of children wrong also. ***************** Has anyone ever done any extensive research on Charles Fowler, born about 1790 and the son of Ignatius Mattingly and Sarah Catherine Fowler? Charles is found on the Breckinridge County Tax lists of 1818 with property on Yellow Bank. He is reportedly on the 1820 census there but this doesn't seem right to me. The Charles on this census is shown as over 45 years of age. This means he would have to have been born at least by 1775 (impossible because his father was born about 1771). Who is this Charles because I do not believe it is Charles Fowler who would have been no more than about 30 in 1820. Further, I believe Charles left Breckinridge but returned later, appears on the 1830 census and later, died there. This elder Charles on the 1820 census had male children as follows: 1 - under 10 1 - 10 to 16 1 - 16 to 18 1 - 18 to 26 1 - 26 to 45 1 over 45 (himself) By 1830 there are two Charles Mattingly's in Breckinridge County. One is age 30 to 40 and this meets with Charles Fowler perfectly. This man even has one son (only one) between the ages of 5 and 10 (this matches the age of Ignatius Arnold to a "T"). The ages of the girls also match: 1 under 5 (Emeline); 1 age 5 to 10 (Elizabeth); 1 age 10 to 15 (Mary); and 2 age 15 to 20 (Louisa and Rosina), then of-course, his wife. The 2nd Charles, I believe, is Charles Elsey Mattingly and aged 20 to 30. This seems to match with the often reported birthdate of 1791 (as the census of 1850 suggests). What I'm suggesting is that I believe Charles Elsey was a son of this "unknown" Charles on the 1820 census, who is dead by 1830 and he was not born about 1787 but about 1791. Now all we need to do is identify this Charles Mattingly who is over age 45 in 1820 and I believe we'll have the line of Henry Elsey. I used to think this man was a Charles Bernard Mattingly but I been convinced that this man never existed. The man I carried as Charles Bernard was in fact, Barnett. Barnett, incidently, is in Grayson County during both 1820 and 1830 and while he had a son in the same age bracket as Charles Elsey, this son was named James (shows up on the 1830 census in Grayson). James later marries a Jane and is on the 1850 census of Grayson County. There is one Mattingly who seems to dissapear on us; that was Clement. He appears in Washington County, Maryland during the 1783 tax records and then comes to Kentucky about the same time as Joseph, Richard, Barnett, and James Barton but I don't find him in 1820 (obviously could be dead or moved). Some folks believe he was the father of that bunch who became Matney's and I suppose he certainly could have been. Anyone in the mood for a great mind twister?
