William, I saw your new note to the file of George Clark Mattingly and am trying to resolve issues I have with your statments and the information in the Holy Name of Mary baptismal records and in Father Lyons "Calvary Genealogy" files in the Filson Club which includes a full page of notes on George Clark Mattingly and his wife Elizabeth Mudd, dau of James Andrew Mudd and Eleanor Green. I found the listing you are talking about on pg.388 District 2 of the 1850 Nelson Co, KY census. But the person (Lowena Lawson for Heritage books) interpreted J C to be I, a taylor age 46 b. MD with Mary E, Austin, Benj, Eliza J and John R just as you show. Looks like next door to this JC/ I Mattingly is a Robert Mattingly also a taylor age 44 b. MD and his family. My first thinking is these two are probably closely related since there are so few Mattingly's in Nelson Co. in 1850. I identify this Robert Mattingly to be the son of George Mattingly and Elizabeth Wimsatt and he first married Lucinda Abell and had 4 children, Mary, William, Susan and Joseph. She probably died and he married Elizabeth Horrell and I show three more children, George, Ignatius and Annie. If the census records do show a G C Mattingly as you believe from your closer look, then I cannot help by believe this is his brother George Mattingly who married Mary Shannon or another brother who we don't know about. I'm not too secure with any information I have on this family, much coming from you and Judith Burger do I don't have my own indeendent view (Don't take that to mean I don't consider you or Judith as secure sources!!!! (ggg) Both of you are the best. But two Mattingly living next door to each other one 44 the other 46, both b in MD after 1800 and both taylors make me think in that direction albeit, it is mostly circumstantial than factual. Coupled my comments above and the fact that George Clark Mattingly and Elizabeth Mudd are listed as the parents of George Columbus in 1839 and Elizabeth in 1841 in the Holy Name of Mary baptismal records and again as the parents of Amanda Catherine in the St Charles, St Mary's. KY baptismal records in 1843. This doesn't fit with the children listed in the 1850 Nelson Co, KY census for G C Mattingly and Mary E. Doesn't fit either with the possiblity that Elizabeth Mudd died before 1841 and G C Mattingly married a Mary E Unknown (see your note below) The George Clark Mattingly family seems to be one more in Marion Co, KY than Nelson Co. His daughters joined the Lorretto Nuns which were in Marion Co and the last child we know of was baptised at St Charles, a Marion Co parish. If all the children found in the 1850 census were actually children of George Clark and Elizabeth Mudd and spread across at least two ocunties, maybe George Clark and Elizabeth Mudd both died by 1850? I have noting on them after the baptism of Amanda Catherine in 1843 in Marion Co, KY and the listing in Father Lyons "Calvary Genealogy" that James T Mattingly was the son of George Mattingly and Elizabeth Mudd b. abt 1845 adn died in Louisville in 1923. The listing of his obit in the paper in 1923 of his children lead us to his being the same James Thomas Mattingly that married Mary Ann Edelen in Grayson Co in 1872. (says one son moved to Seattle, WA, two sons were "Brothers" in the CAtholic church and two dau. were "Sisters" in the Catholic church. Agrees with my records. Wish I knew how to do this in 10 words or less!!!!! Thanks Bob Listing from your updated Mattingly chart at FTM extracted this morning. "Marriage bond dated January 28, 1828, Washington County, Kentucky. Surety, Edward Mattingly. C. Moore names four children which other researchers have not reported. I have included them here pending clarification (Abe, Benjamin, John R., and Amanda C.). To date, I have not found George or family on any of the census records of 1850 or 1880 - William R Mattingly Findings as of 12-27-00: The 1850 census Index of Nelson County, Ky. shows a J. C. Mattingly. Closer inspection reveals this is G. C. or possibly, George Clark Mattingly, age 46 and married to Mary E., age 47. In the household were Austin 13; Benjamin 11; Eliza J. 9; and John R. 8. Also in the home were Caroline 9 and Mary J. Nicholson age 3; and Thomas McCau(?) my copy shows this as Thomas McCandless age 25) age 21. It is believed that Elizabeth Mudd had died about 1840 and that George then married Mary. (this is hard to support as far as I can see from other evidence, more likely that George and Elizabeth died before 1850 if children were all over the place) Most of his children have been located on the census as follows: Richard was residing in the home of William Mudd;(cannot find him) Edward had died before 1850; Eliza E. was likely already married to a Smith (I'm not going to look for a Smith even in 1850); Mary Ann (Sister Mary Charles, she actually died at the Bethlehem Academy in Hardin Co, KY)) and Rebecca (Sister M Benedict) were residing at the Society of Loretto (Rebecca actually became a Nun) (both actually became nuns and in 1850 were not residing at the Society of Loretto which was in Marion Co, but in Hardin Co probably at one of the Loretto run schools like Bethlehem Academy since most of the individuals listed at the residence were children from all over the country, the census did not list the actual name of the school but since Sister Mary Charles died there, that is where she probably taught for many years).; George was living with the Marriott family (he was also in Hardin Co). Those which could not be found are: Isabelle; James Thomas; Abe (likely this is Austin); Lucy; and Amanda. All children are currently carried under his first wife pending further clarification. - William R Mattingly"
