    2. Judith, Please clarify for me which John Baptist Mattingly this is that married Ann Fenwick, dau of Cuthbert Fenwick and Elizabeth Brooke Fenwick Spalding? (Donnelly's book St. Mary's Co Colonial Period Tenants pg 111 does not say who the parents of John Baptist Mattingly were.) Looks like I've got my John Baptists mixed up again! Shirley

    3. Shirley, my files are probably mixed up too or at least incomplete, because I have that the Ann Fenwick, daughter of Cuthbert Fenwick and Elizabeth Brooke married Clement T. Spalding as a first marriage but I have no published documentation of this. I don't know if she had a second marriage. I have that Ann Spalding, daughter of Elizabeth Brooke by her second marriage to John Spalding, c 1729, married, bef Sept 4, 1759, SMCM John Baptist Mattingly, d 1817, probably the son of John Baptist Mattingly b. 1713, d. after December of 1793. I have no proof of this connection beyond H. M. Mattingly's comment on p, 27 of his Mattingly Family in Early America, "possibly he (John Baptist Mattingly b. 1713) had a son John Baptist" The will abstract of Elizabeth Brooke Fenwick Spalding is not much help, in that it lists B.T. Mattingly. That could well be a mis-transcription of C. T. Mattingly though. I have not seen the original. Cuthbert Fenwick does not name his daughters in his will and I have not found a will for John Spalding, only one Prerogative Court Abstract that lists Elizabeth Spalding as his Administratrix/Executrix but does not name his children. Conclusion: The father of John Baptist Mattingly, d. 1817 is not proved, but circumstantial evidence suggests he may be John Baptist Mattingly b. 1713, d. after Dec of 1793.
