    2. William R Mattingly
    3. I'm tending to think that John M. was John Miles Mattingly, born 11-1-1835, in Marion County but still haven't discovered any actual proof although this is the only John M. I've found with a son named Charles of about the correct age. I've found John on the 1870 census but have not completed searching the 1860 census yet. There were a lot of John Mattingly's around.

    2. J.G. You are correct as was William. That''s what happens when I don't read what I write. For a month I was corresponding via Lilbraries from Mt Vernon, IL to Danville Ky to Charlottesville, VA. Now, my computer has a new fan and new power supply. 2. William, etal You are correct in stating that Richard, Jr was the son of Richard, SR. I have Charles A. as born 20 Oct 1856, so the Census would have to be off 3 to 4 years. I have Louisa A. as marrying Samuel T. Awberry, however, her older brother William married Mary A. Gaither on 28 Sep 1856. Of course, Louisa could have had more than1 wife. And, William was in Breckenridge County in 1850 and Grayson in 1860 and 70. So, it would appear that Charles A. in Marion County would be another Charles A. 1. Re: [MATTINGLY] Susan Mattingly Barron
    2. William, Melissa, etal My Computer is back up and running for the first time in over a month with a new power supply and hopefully will last a little longer. From the information we developed a couple of years ago on the Mattinglys in Virginia, Susan might fit into the James Mattingly family of Northern Virginia of Fairfax County in the 1780's. 1. John Baptist Mattingly born circa 1755-60, son of John B. died 1761, married Dykeander Boswell 6 Mar 1781 and is credited with 4 children: John born 13 Nov 1781; James born 1783; Mary born 19 Aug 1783; Elizabeth born 9 Apr 1792; and Rebeckey born 19 FEb 1795. Elizabeth married Samuel Fisher, 2 Mar 1822 and Rebeckey married Gerard Spinks. 2. John Mattingly born 1756-60 married Elizabeth Unknonw and had one son John who was born circa 1798 died 1870 married Nancy Jane Lane & had one three children born in the 1830's. 3. There was a Richard Mattaney in Pittsylvania County in 1785 with 4 whites. 4. In 1782 there was a James Mattingly in Fairfax County with 8 whites. I do not have any information regarding his family. In 1785 he had only 7 whites. 5. John Mattingley had 3 white souls in1782 in Fairfax County and 3 in 1785. The only known association with Cezars family appears to be an attempt to convert one of Cezars grandchildren into one of the Mattinglys above. i.e the John B. born 1759 who went to Ky and made his will in 1817. Charley wmatting@cablenet-va.com writes: > Ran across this and thought I'd share it although I have no idea where Susan > Mattingly fits. 3. John it looks like you, Charles and I have the same information. I have never really been able to prove, beyond doubt, that Richard, born 1756, was in fact, Richard, Jr. but I believe with all I am that he was. 3. That's right. Charles Anderson was the youngest child of William and Barbara. The family must have left Breckinridge County, moved to Grayson, about the same time Charles was born because his birth is recorded in both counties. I have John Miles Mattingly, 11-1-1835, as a son of James and Martha Burch Mattingly and I believe his son Charles, is the same man we have the obituary for but don't have factual evidence of that yet. >For what it's worth, I have Charles A. as the 13th child of William and >Barabara Spencer Mattingly with William born 1807 d c1875 Grayson Co, KY as the son >of John Mattingly + Sarah Sallie Wheatley; and gradson of Richard Mattingly + >Eleanor Hinton; with Richard the son of Barnet Mattingly, migrant from >Maryland.

I also have another daughter for him, named Mary Rose born 1863. He is listed in Kentucky Catholic Pioneers pg 73, as living with Martin Sr. in the 1850 census, after looking at the orginial census, I debated his age as being 76, it looks more like 16 to me. 3. Charley, I THINK his parents are James Mattingly b abt 1812 (My calculation) and Martha Burch, but William will have a lot more than that. 2. William R Mattingly
    3. I think I have an error in my files. I have always thought that the Charles Mattingly on the 1880 census of Marion COunty, Kentucky was Charles Anderson, son of William Mattingly and Barbara Spencer. That does not appear to have been the case. A closer study finds a Charles A. Mattingly, aged 21, in the home of Jonathan Gaither and his wife Louisa A. during the 1880 census of Grayson County. This was Louisa A. Mattingly and she was a sister to Charles Anderson. His relationship was shown as unknown and his age was off by a couple of years but I think the Charles Mattingly in Marion County was none other than the son of John M. Mattingly.

    3. Judith, thanks for the information. The name Monroe caught my eye also but this Charles was Charles Anderson and he was a son of William Mattingly and Barbara Spencer and the youngest brother of my gt gt grandfather, Robert L. Mattingly. Still, I find no other Monroe Mattingly with a brother named Thomas. I've seen death certificates wrong before and because of Charles age when he died, the informant may have been wrong about the name of his father. Another problem though is that Charles Anderson Mattingly died in 1928 and is buried in the Hopewell Cemetery in Grayson County, Ky. Another similarity is that Charles Anderson was married at least three times, possibly four, and did live in Marion County for a while. One of C. A.'s daughters, Minnie, married into the Templeton line of Eddsey, who was married to William C. Mattingly.

    3. A good friend and excellent researcher has forwarded the below obituary for Charles Henry Mattingly, son of John M. Mattingly. I'm thinking John M. Mattingly was John Miles Mattingly whose wife had been Dorinda Ellen Cooper but according to earlier census records their son named Charles would have been born about 1857. Naturally, as we know, the census records are often incorrect as to ages. Can anyone attest to the identity of John M. Mattingly? ********************* His obituary was in The Lebanon Enterprise, Friday, 11-30-1945. "C. H. MATTINGLY, 91, EXPIRES AT LORETTO - CHARLES HENRY MATTTINGLY, 91, died Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at his home a mile from Loretto, on the Raywick Road. Death was due to the infirmities of age. Until recently, he had been in fair health but had been under a physician's care for several weeks. Mr. Mattingly was born at Holy Cross on September 13, 1854, a son of Mr. and Mrs. John M. Mattingly, long deceased. Practically all his life was spent as a farmer in the Loretto section, and he was married four times. A number of children survive, including Miss Rosie Bell Mattingly, Tom, Pete and Monroe Mattingly of Raywick, Mrs. George Mattingly of Finley, and two small children, at home. One brother also survives. Requiem Mass was intoned Monday morning at 8 o'clock at St. Charles Church by the Rev. Fred W. Dudine, and burial was in St. Charles Cemetery."
