This appears to have been John Thomas Mattingly, son of Barnett Mattingly and Priscilla Cash, if you're looking at the 1880 census. He was married at least four times from all I can tell. Wives: Married Delilah Keeling on 11-19-1851; Mary Elizabeth Keeling on 5-10-1855; Rosia A. E. after 1875; and Catherine Hays in 1887. I haven't seen a marriage record for Rosia but they were certainly together in 1880. The James you mention was a brother named James Jeremiah. The actual birthdates of both men are open to debate and difficult or next to impossible to accurately pinpoint using the census records. >John Mattingly b.1827 father born Va. living in Willisburg Washington Co,Ky. >Wife is Rosia. >James Mattingly b.1835 living nearby. >Wife Martha. >Can't place the two.

The Peter Mattingly who married Claire Johnson was born about 1835 if you consider the census records and he appears on the 1850 census with his parents, Sylvester and Nancy Ann Graves Mattingly in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Peter himself was married before 1860 and appears on the census with his wife but no children. The census index for 1880, Leonardtown, Md. names Peter as Robert H. but the actual census was impossible for me to read and I suspect the transcriber simply wrote whatever they thought it read. I have seen nothing to prove that this Peter Mattingly's middle name was Haverman and the nearest I have seen was the "H" on the 1880 census. I too, carry him in that manner but continue to seek verification. That his middle initial was "H" seems certain enough but who knows at this point. It seems very possible that someone upon finding a death record for a Peter Haverman Mattingly in 1919, simply assumed that this was the same man. At the same time though, I have to state that a search of the 1850 census of Maryland shows no John Mattingly with a son named Peter. Sarah however, is on the census with children - Mary J. 13; Ann 12; Peter 8; Ignatius W. 5; Catherine 4; and Mary 3 months. Perhaps her husband had died by this time? On this same census, Sylvester appears (name spelled Mattingley) with his family in St. Mary's as follows: John 27; Mary A. 26; Jane H. 21; Peter 15; Elizabeth 15; and Amanda A. 12. It's quite obvious that we have at least two Peter Mattingly's but the one who married Claire was born about 1835/36. My own conclusion, at this time, is to drop the middle name of Peter Mattingly, born about 1835 until more can be determined on him. Perhaps someone has more information?
I am coming up with two Peter Haverman Mattinglys and I don't know who's who or IF there are two. One was a trustee of St. Joseph's RCC in Morganza MD (with my ggf Thomas C Edwards) when the new church was being built. In a booklet they show his dates as 1814-1917 ( probably wrong--- would make him 103????) The other I found is in Raymond Johnson's data base online showing Peter (1842-1917) married to Clare Emily Johnson. He shows his parents as Sylvester Mattingly and Ann Nancy Graves. I have a MD death cert for Peter Haverman Mattingly born 4/6/1841 - died 2/1/1919; he was SINGLE and I have confirmed with my 86 year old cousin that the Peter in our line was single. His parents on the certificate are shown as John Mattingly and Sarah Edwards - which confirms our data. Can anyone clarify this --- are there two born about the same time? Thanks. jean edwards
Does anyone recognize this man? Roy Joseph Mattingly was born about 1922 in Indiana and died on 10-15-2002 in Washington, Indiana at the St. Mary's Medical Center. He appears on the 1930 census of Indiana as a 8 year old with his family as follows: Roy 31 (Index shows Ray) Ames 32 (Likely this was Amy) Ruth A. 11 Fay 9 Roy J. 8 (Index shows Ray J.) Earl J. 6 Charles 4 Pauline 2 Wayne 7 months Cemetery records show the following survivors: Cottrell, Wilma sister Jones, Norma sister Mattingly, Earl brother Mattingly, Charles brother Mattingly, Wayne brother Mattingly, Jim brother Mattingly, Darrell son Waters, Bev daughter
The state of Kentucky is likely one of the most ardent in providing information about families. One of the Kentucky sites I frequently use is <http://kentucky.gov/Portal/Category.aspx?id=fac_resources-genealogy>. This site is really an off-shoot from <http://kentucky.gov/Default.html> and will link a researcher to a world of information from many other states as well.
Hello, I don't believe that these folks are any of my relatives, but I did receive a baptism (July 3 ...no year yet) for a Mary Mattingly who was the daughter of Raphael and Winifred Mattingly. The sponsor was Polly Dent. Anyone know who these folks might be? I don't see them listed in the DC marriage books from 1811 on. I'm still trying to find my John Mattingly without any success yet. Just curious. Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York

Maybe an area for exploration: The grandson of Joseph James Wilson Mattingly and Susan Tucker; F. John Mattingly, born November 1885, married Helen Carrico. Could this be be the grand-daughter of the Susan Carrico who died at age 96?
I've done a very little checking on this as yet but it strikes me that the name Wilse might be a mistake when the name was actually Wilson. There were a couple of Wilson Mattingly's around at the time but I'm not sure of a Green connection. I know at least one of the daughters of Mary Jane Mattingly married into the Green family in Grayson County, Ky. but there was no Wilson Mattingly in this particular line.

Mattingly Researchers: I have had both Thomas and James married to a Doyne for several years. Not too long ago I corrected James wife to Mary rather than Ann, mainly on evidence produced by Linda. I suppose 40 to 50 pages of 150 receive corrections each year, and the number of children given by Msgr HEM, while often correct, are subject to correction when documentary evidence is produced. I'll add Elizabeth, and, If documentation disproves her existence, I'll remove her. The field of Genealogy, over the last ten years, seems to be keyed to the idea that if enough people repeat an error published by another, it must be correct, so it gets published again. I just read yesterday that Robert Clarke, the Surveyor, who has been adopted by many Clarke descendants, many with no documentation, feel that all that is needed is for B to cite A and C to cite B & A, etc. etcetera. You may be interested to know that many documents in Charles County Court records pertaining to Catholics were never indexed. If you don't believe that, try to find when Cezar sold Mattinglys Hope in 1919. His name never appears in the Index. And, I believe the 2d sale is only indexed under Cole, the buyer: not Mattingly or Turner. I believe that the information in HEM's book pretty much documents that the Dorothy and Ann Mattingly that are named in Ignatius Doyne's will are children of James. This was confirmed by Edward Mattingly's will of 1778 where he names "Joseph Mattingly, son of my brother James, deceased" and later he mentions Ann Gardner, sister to the said Joseph". I think the confusion came because both Thomas and James had daughters named Dorothy. But the granddaughters that he names Dorothy and Ann were definitely children of James, brother of Thomas. He does not name a second daughter married to a Mattingly. This is not to say that both Thomas and James weren't married to Doynes but it unlikely based upon the information that we have. The interesting thing about this land deed of 1753 is that it mentions an Elizabeth Doyne Mattingly. We really need to get a hold of the original deed because I'm sure that it was mis-transcribed, i.e. it probably named granddaughters Dorothy and Ann Mattingly daughters of my late daughter, Elizabeth Doyne Mattingly. But, I'm speculating at this point. Does anyone have access to the Charles County land deeds for 1756?
