Copies of the notes re the Missouri Mattinglys went in the mail today to Judith, Loretta, Sarah, Charlie and Brenda. Some cautions: I did not compile the notes, nor do I know who did. I've inquired through the person who gave them to me, but am thus far unsuccessful. I have no reason to question any of the information, BUT I'd like to know the source for having Barton as the son of Luke and I'd like to know which Luke we are talking about. Who was his father? When and where did he go in Kentucky? Someone has said this Luke was son of John son of Caesar a.k.a. Cezar That Caesar's John had a Luke seems clear enough to me. BUT How do we know that the Luke who alledgedly had a Barton (who settled in Perry County) and Luke who was the son of Caesar's John are identical? Peace and All Good! Fr. Hi Charley, This Thomas L. Mattingly is probably well into his 70s if he was a WW II vet. His last known residence was in Anderson, Indiana. I was hoping someone would recognize or know him right off and be able to put me in touch with him. T/5 Thomas L. Mattingly Service Address: APO 3589 N.Y. Home Address: 705 (or 105) Hendricks Street Anderson, Indiana Next of Kin: Mary E. Mattingly I was contacted by someone who has something of his from the War and they would like to return it to him or his immediate family. Shirley
Shirley I do not know if this will help any, or not. There are three Thomas L. Mattingly's in the white pages of the online Telephone Directory. They are: Thomas L Mattingly at 502, 239-3164 at 9603 Cronell Drive, Louisville, KY Thomas L Mattingly at Gap Knob Road, New Hope, KY Thomas L Mattingly at Honey Land, Olive Hill, KY. I think it is generally agreed that Ignatius Mattingly, son of Leonard Mattingly and Mary Hayden had a son named Henry because he mentions this son in his will "Item 9th; My son Henry has drawn from me $18'D dollars that together with my Cherry Run tract of land which I bequeath for the use of his wife (no first name) Mattingly and her children in the hands of Jno. Lancaster as trustee at eight hundred dollars after charging the said Henry with the said two amounts he shall draw so as to make one full share of my estate.". It seems we also agree that Henry was born about 1801 and that he married Juliette Kidwell, later moved to Daviess County, Indiana and is buried in St. Peter's Cemetery, Montgomery, Daviess County, Indiana. A possible scenerio I have been discussing with another researcher, is that perhaps Henry Mattingly, son of Ignatius, was actually the Henry Mattingly that married Cecelia Knott and was born about 1813, not 1801. We know that Ignatius had a son named Stephen A. born in about 1810 so having Henry born in 1813 is not out of the question. All of the children of Ignatius remained in Kentucky with the exception of Henry, and for a short time, Stephen but Stephen returned and died in Meade County, Ky. I suppose the real question is - Do we have any concrete proof that the Henry who married Juliette Ann Kidwell was actually the son of Ignatius. The will of Ignatius does not mention the name of Henry's wife and I'm wondering do we simply have this 1801 Henry attached to Ignatius for any reason other than we put him there at one time and have simply come to accept the connection as fact.
I'm still chewing on the documents etc. that Judith sent me, but in the meantime I'd like to throw in something else I've discovered in Msgr. Mattingly's second book, re the Mattingly's in early America. On p. 228 he cites Fr. Walton's diary on the wedding of Luke Mattingly and Eleanor Thompson on 11 Feb. 1772 and adds "related in the second degree." This is significant and may be helpful at some point . It is canonical legalese for "first cousins." It would mean that, if Luke was the son of John Mattingly and Grace Brewer, then Eleanor's mother was either a Mattingly or a Brewer. This of course presuming that this was Eleanor's first marriage. If it were a second marriage, then either he father or her mother was a Mattingly or a Brewer. Nothing is ever completely simple in the Mattingly morass, is it? Thought I'd share that before sleep erases it from my consciousness. Fr. Blaine
Folks, I am looking for Thomas L. Mattingly, an Airborne soldier in 1944, formerly of Anderson, IN and Washington, IN. He was a veteran of WW II and was in Normandy. I do not know if he is still living. Anyone with information on how I can reach Mr. Mattingly, please contact me directly. Thanks! Shirley Platt
Hello Fr. Burkey, I too would be interested in seeing the 11 pages of work by another Mattingly. sandi reynolds
One of our very fine researchers alerted me to some Mattingly death certificates at rootsweb which I have viewed. One in particular caught my attention and I am unable to identify the family. The certificate is for Barbara Ellen Mattingly born 9-25-1886 and died 2-14-1941 in Fleming County, Kentucky. Barbara is listed as a single woman who died of congestive heart failure. Age shown was 55 yrs., 4 months and 18 days. Her parents are listed as Elijah Mattingly (reportedly born in Fleming Co.) and Jane Power (reportedly born in Lewis Co., Ky.). The person providing information was Mrs. Pat Clark. I'm fairly certain that Elijah is likely a middle name of her father and have a suspicion that perhaps he might fit the picture of the following man. The 1870 census of Lewis County, KY. shows a 9 year old Joseph Mattingly (listed as a nephew) in the home of William and Polly R. Power. The 1880 census shows a 20 year old Joseph Mattingley in the home of William B. and Polly Power, still in Lewis Co. There was no Jane Power shown in the household during either census. The 1880 census also shows a niece named Ellen Mattingley (age 24) in the Power home (likely Joseph's sister). Another nephew listed in the home of Wm. Power was named as George Arnold (age 28) and a mother-in-law, in the home, was named as Elizabeth Goddard. I tend to think this Joseph/Elijah is from the line of John TOwnley Mattingly, Mason County, Kentucky. Any suggestions or thoughts appreciated.

In recent weeks I've seen a lot of food for thought. Here's another serving. I'm a great grandson of Rose Ann Burkey nee Mattingly, who was a great gramddaughter of Henry Mattingly who settled in western Allegany County MD in the 1700s. He in turn was a great grandson of Cezar. That makes me 11th generation. That's meant only as an introduction. Since I've been here in St. Louis, I've learned much to my surprise that a fellow priest stationed here with me (till recently) is also of Mattingly descent. He gave me 11 closely-typed and heavily annotated pages that had been given him which show a tree of many Missouri Mattingly's going back to one Barton or Bartholomew Mattingly who came to Perry County MO from Kentucky sometime in the early 1800s and died in Missouri in 1833 at the age of 57. Born in 1776, he married two women named Cabron and died on 30 July 1833 -- I would presume at Perryville. These papers (source as yet unknown to me) claim that Barton was the son of Luke Mattingly who married Eleanore Thompson at St. Inigo's Parish in St. Mary's County, Maryland, on 11 Feb. 1772. "Sometime between 1790 and 1800 Luke Mattingly acquired a Spanish land grant for a track of land just north of Brewer (MO) but never settled it, instead assigned the ground to Clement Hayden and presumably returned to Kentucky." 1790-1800, of course, is before the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis and Clark Expedition. I am firmly convinced that these people are our relatives. But it is more a moral certitude than an unimpeachable one. From Barton forward the notes seem be very firm, although incomplete. Going backwards, however, I wish there was more precision, which might indicate a more solid knowledge. "Sometime" and "presumably" makes me wonder who was doing the presuming and when and on what authority. Maybe some of you have already chewed on this or would liketo do so. Fr. Blaine Burkey, O.F.M.Cap., born Cumberland MD, 30 Nov. 1935 (ordained a priest 1961)

William, Judith managed to come up with her death certificate that states that her parents were Felix Mattingly and Matilda Spalding even though her obit said her father was Felix McAtee. I ran across some older messages concerning John Coleman Mattingly, son of Martin, grandson of Leonard. Karen was kind enough to post the obituary for his wife (back on 8-19-2003) who was identified as Elizabeth McAtee Mattingly but who turns out to be another Mattingly.
