Judith--question for you...I found a marriage record in Washington Co, KY for Barton Mattingly and Polly Cambron: Washington Co, KY Marriages 1792-1878; Kington, Margaret Clark; pg 114 County marriage book 1 pg 57; marriage 4 Aug 1804 by Rev Stephen Theodore Baden. Is this the same Barton Mattingly who married Elizabeth Cambron mentioned below? Thanks! The spelling Cambren was used.
For fear that my previous posting might be misleading, I have recorded the Mattingly names that appeared on the 1794 Census of St. Inigoes. You will note that there are 2 Luke Mattinglys listed. Judith Burger THE JESUIT MISSIONS OF ST. MARY'S COUNTY, MARYLAND, Edwin W. Beitzell, Reprinted 1998, St. Mary's County Historical Society, Leonardtown, Maryland pp. 98-99-100. "In the year 1794, Father Walton recorded in a memorandum book that the communicants at Easter time totaled 392 at St. Inigoes and 208 on the Patuxent. He also recorded the names of 387 white members and 93 colored members of his congregation. They were as follows: (30) (Just the Mattingly names follow. Note that many names are repeated as written. Judith Burger) p. 98 Wm. , Robt. , Ignatius , Ignatius , Wm. , Ellen , Marian , Zach. , Susan p. 99 Bertram , Leonard , Ed, Margaret , Priscilla, John , Catherine, Luke, Leonard , Henrietta , Zach , Nancy, Anna, Luke, Mary , Jos. , Jane, Bennet, Peter p. 100 John Baptist , Bennett , Francis , Sara , Monica , Thos. , Ellen , Jos., Sara , Eliza. , Edw. There's been some discussion about Barton Mattingly son of Luke and I thought this might interest some. It seems to be the citation that has been used to initiate the discussion. Judith MARYLAND CATHOLICS ON THE FRONTIER, The Missouri and Texas Settlements, Timothy J. O'Rourke, 1973-1993, Brefney Press. Obtained from Jack O'Rourke, father of deceased Timothy J. O'Rourke.p. 171 "MATTINGLY FAMILY: A very large number of descendants of the Mattingly family will be found in the Manning section. The particular branch in this section descends from Barton Mattingly (who occasionally appears in records as Bartholomew). The parish records of The Barrens indicate that Barton Mattingly and Elizabeth Cambron, married civilly ca 1819, were married in a religious ceremony in 1824 by Rev. John Odin. The record was quite garbled but it appeared to say that Barton was the son of Luke Mattingly and Nelly Cambron, while his wife was the daughter of Soe (Zoe?) Cambron. The spelling Cambren was used. Most likely Barton Mattingly's parents were the Luke Mattingly and Eleanor Thompson who were married at St. Inigoes parish, St. Mary's co., Md., 11 Feb 1772, the record there stating that Luke and Eleanor were related in the second degree (first cousins) Barton Mattingly was born ca 1776. In May 1833 he was appointed road commissioner of Perry co., Mo. He died in 1833 and was buried (as Bartholomew) on 31 Oct ae 57. His estate was administrated in Perry county (#93) under the name Barton Mattingly, with William Taylor as administrator. The widow Elizabeth survived. Heirs were Mary, Benedict, John, Austin, Matthew, Elizabeth, Ann Robertson, and Ann Vessel (ls). Final settlement was made 6 May 1837. Luke Mattingly, the father of Barton, was the recipient of a Spanish land grant, but assigned it to Clement Hayden. Whether Luke Mattingly returned to Kentucky is not known." -------------- Transcribed from the above cited book, p. 171 by Judith A. Burger March 19, 2004. I took the liberty of dividing the data into paragraphs as it was in one long statement and hard to read and follow. I made no other correction of any kind. NOTE: Both O'Rourke's "Catholic Families of Southern Maryland" p. 34, and Beitzell's "The Jesuit Missions of St. Mary's County, Maryland" p. 144 state the marriage of Luke Mattingly to Eleanor Thompson occurred at St. Francis Xavier, not at St. Inigoes. That may be a help in identifying this particular Luke Mattingly, as William, Ignatius, Luke and Leonard Mattingly were all members of St. Inigoes parish in 1794. See: THE JESUIT MISSIONS OF ST. MARY'S COUNTY, MARYLAND, Edwin W. Beitzell, Reprinted 1998, St. Mary's County Historical Society, Leonardtown, Maryland pp. 98-99. ================================================================

I have Ignatius Mattingly, son of Thomas II, as having three sons, Leonard, William and Luke who migrated to Kentucky. Leonard married Mary Hayden; William married Catherine Spalding [and had 2 other wives]; and Luke Anne Nancy Cissell. I have never seen a wife for Ignatius other than a Sarah _____. Father Burkey's Luke is given as th son of John, son of Cezar, son of Thomas I, the immigrant. John married Grace Brewer. I do not know who Cezar's wife was, and I have no documentation to support the statement that this Luke was the father of Barton or Bartholomew Mattingly. Hopefully, someone else will provide that info. Charley san526@concentric.net writes: > Is the Luke Mattingly from the Fr. Burkey papers the son of Ignatius > Mattingly Sr. and Catherine Spalding?
Hi All, Is the Luke Mattingly from the Fr. Burkey papers the son of Ignatius Mattingly Sr. and Catherine Spalding? I need to do my home work. I thought all of his children were from Syenlen Hagen. (I'm not sure how to spell her first name) sandi Reynolds.
I do not have a 3rd marriage Clement Mattingly/Matney Mt. Zion Cemetery Brown County Indiana. Headstone of Clement and Sary Matney are sandstone and handmade. Sary Matney Clement Matney AD 1834 AD no 1838 on stone now DC S 10 (10 Dec 1834) A 1/4 in. thick piece broken off J W 23 (23 Jan 1838)
I've learned today from Myra Gremaud (Barbara Ernst's sister) that the notes were put together by a Mrs. Alvi. Myra could not remember her first name, but said that Mrs. Alvi had gotten the first part of the informaiton from a book by Tim O'Rourke. Loretta Alsobrooks also told me the information appears "in Tim O'Rourke's book." Next question: which one of his many books?

If anyone has any of their parents--please let me know. Shirley
This Joseph Mattingly sounds a lot like the son of Lucius/Luke and the brother of Barton Mattingly and Jeremiah Mattingly of Union County. I wonder? Barton went on to MO and died there in 1833 and Jeremiah was there for a while, his daughters stayed there and were married there, I think and he, Jeremiah, came back to KY. Is the Upper Louisiana Territory the same as Missouri ?? Our Priest is probably in his late 50's or early 60's. He has a marvelous Soprano Voice and sang some tunes at the Dinner on Sunday. But he couldn't hit the high notes on Danny Boy. Before serving started we had a young lady in the 20's who was outstanding in her work. Her name was Kate. I sang her the song I have heard since childhood - although we only had an Aunt Kate. The marriage for Thomas A. Mattingly to Paulina Laws comes up with his name correct but hers is shown as Perlina F. Laws with the date 1-14-1880 but no County listed. Another marriage is recorded without a county shown between Angeline Kinder and Thomas H. Mattingly on 9-19-1878.
Thought for Today May those who love us love us, And those who don't love us, May God turn their hearts, And if He doesn't turn their hearts, May He turn their ankles, So we'll know them by their limping. - Irish Blessing

Fr. Blaine, I await the arrival of the 11 pages with unbecoming anticipation. Thanks for taking the time to photocopy and send them. These old notes often contain some small clue found nowhere else, and maybe, just maybe they will contain the key to unlock one more Mattingly mystery. It might not be the resolution of the one we are seeking, but in the long run may lead to something just as interesting. Thanks a million. Thanks too for your detailed line of descent. You are now the official cousin to my 5 kiddos, 12 grandchildren and one great grand daughter. One can never have enough kinfolks . : ) That's my motto.
