    1. Re: [MATTINGLY] James MATTINGLY

    3. The family shown is that of John Townley Mattingly. Most of the information I have on John comes by way of Tim Mattingly, a descendant. Townley apparently had eight sons but I know of only seven names. Some of the information I have is different, especially some of the dates of birth which I have based primarily on census records. For example you show the son John, born in 1798 while I have his birth in 1792. The Nancy Lane you show may very well have been a first wife but by 1839 he was married to Nancy Hopper, at least according to everything I have seen. Let me share some of what I have and we can discuss the differences. Descendants of John Townley Mattingly Generation No. 1 1. JOHN TOWNLEY1 MATTINGLY1 was born Abt. 1756 in Maryland, and died Abt. 1830 in Kentucky. He married BARBARA UNKNOWN. Notes for JOHN TOWNLEY MATTINGLY: It is believed, but not proven, that Townley came from Allegany County. Maryland. At this time his parentage has not been determined. The census of 1850 finds Townley's children in Mason County, Kentucky. There is one individual as yet unidentified but almost certainly from this line and that was a Ruth Mattingly, age 17 and residing in the home of John and Nancy Mefford, also in Mason County. A descendant, Tim Mattingly has provided much of the data herein. Further info has been gleaned from census records. Should you be in possession of information regarding the line of John Townley Mattingly, please contact me. He appears as Townley Mattingly on the 1820 census of Mason County, Kentucky, over the age of 45, as was his wife. There were six sons in the home; three between the ages of 18 and 26, and three between ages of 16 and 18. There were two daughters aged 16 to 26. Townley is gone from the census by 1830 and presumed dead. Two of his sons were grown men in 1820, with their own families; Richard and Andrew. That should have been a total of eight sons but only the names of seven are known. Children of JOHN MATTINGLY and BARBARA UNKNOWN are: 2. i. ANDREW MATTINGLY, b. Abt. 1782, Pennsylvania; d. Aft. 1850. 3. ii. RICHARD MATTINGLY, b. Abt. 1786, Maryland. 4. iii. HENRY MATTINGLY, b. Abt. 1788. 5. iv. JOHN MATTINGLY, b. Abt. 1792, Maryland; d. December 04, 1854, Kentucky. (On the 1850 census for Mason County, Kentucky. Rev. HEM reported that he was shown as guardian for two children on the census: Berta M. and Steal. My copy of the census does not shown a child named Berta. Other children may have included: Alexander, Nancy, Elizabeth (could be Jennie) and Berta. Death records report that John was aged 66 when he died in 1854. His mother's name was shown as Barbara on this record. Records show that John and Nancy were married in 1839 but the census records show him married by 1830. Court House records include the following: 4-8-1885 - Elizabeth, Amanda, John, Nancy, Susan, Steele L. Mattingly, Deed of Partition, from Nancy Mattingly et al. Deed, Vol. 87, p. 179. 4-8-1885 - Alexander, Margaret, Jane C., William, Richard Mattingly, Deed of Partition from Nancy Mattingly et al. Deed. Vol. 87, p. 179.) v. BARBARA MATTINGLY, b. Abt. 1796. 6. vi. FREDERICK M. MATTINGLY, b. Abt. 1798, Kentucky; d. Bef. 1860, Kentucky. vii. MARY MATTINGLY, b. Abt. 1800. Notes for MARY MATTINGLY: Apparently never married and lived with her brother Frederick in 1850 and with his widow, Miranda, through 1880. 7. viii. JACOB FRANCIS MATTINGLY, b. Abt. 1801, Mason County, Kentucky; d. Aft. December 1874, Kentucky. 8. ix. BARTON MATTINGLY, b. Abt. 1804, Kentucky.

    3. I'm running slow with PC problems so someone may have already replied but HEM refers to Father Herman E. Mattingly, deceased, and his book, "The Mattingly Family in Early America". If you are working without access to his work, I would recommend you consider acquiring a copy. They aren't particularly expensive ($20 last I heard) and using it as a reference on the early family is almost essential. Not that the good father didn't make a few errors, he did, but they were few, to the best of my knowledge, and can be worked around quite easily. Meanwhile, I, and I suspect others, would be willing to help out where we can. Good luck on all this.

    2. William, etal The statement that James Mattingly, bc1760, entered Service in 1780 from DC was incorrect in James' application. There was not a DC until Dec 1, 1800, and it wasn't even discussed until about 1798/99. They entered from VA and applied for Pension from DC and, if died after 1846, were back in VA. I would presume that all of theCounty Records remained in VA for the entire period; however, I do not know if that is a true statement or not. It included over 30 square miles of Virginia: mainly Arlingon and Prince William Counties; and nearly 70 square miles of MD across the Potomac River. In 1800 Census, there were 14,103 residents of DC In 1846 all of DC on the South Side of Potomac River was returned to Virginia. So, if they entered into the Rev War from Alexandria, Prince William or whatever County, it was from Virginia. And, if they died in DC between 1800 and 1846 it could have been Alexandria or Prince William County. It may have included part of other counties like Fairfax - I'm not sure. 1. Re: [MATTINGLY] Mary Hayden wife of Leonard Mattingly, Sr.
    2. Judith, etal We ran into that same problem in the fall of 1996, when we found that record in St Marys County. What did we do. We took a look at the family of Leonard and found that Jane was always listed as the oldest, followed by John. We than noted that Jane married in 1788 Nov 19, and brother John did not have his first son until 24 Dec 1791. This gave us considerable room to work out the birthdate for Jane and John. It would be real easy to place John's birthdate up to 1765 and Jane to 1763. This would make Polly, born 1749, 14 years of age when Jane was born. I guess we could move John up to 1766 or 67 with Jane at 65 and Polly is now 16. I know it is not nice to play with dates; however, I do not have any set in concrete dates for Polly and John's marriage, or for Jane's birth. Is there something to define not later than, or not before. My Great Grandmother Sarah [Hayes] born 1798 married Thomas McColgin in 1812 and had 5 children by 1823 when Thomas died and she married William Vaughn in 1823, possibly within a few days or weeks of Thomas death as she her 5 th child was not born until two weeks later. After 4 Vaughn children, William died in 1835; and she then married my Great Grandfather, Jesse Allen Moore, in 1836 and had 4 more children. She was a Grandmother by 31 or 32. And, Jesse and Sarah celebrated their Golden Anniversary in '86 before she died in 1987. I know that John presumably financed the trip to KY, and was never repaid by Leonard, but it may be that Dad had some money; and Mary Polly may have came with a dower. 3. To the list: A new Veterans Administration URL is now on line. They have 3.2 million records for veterans buried at 120 national cemeteries since the Civil War. They also have records for some state veterans cemeteries and burials in Arlington National Cemetery since 1999. The list will be updated daily. At this time they do not have burials of veterans in private cemeteries, but hope to add the ones later whose families requested grave markers from the VA. The search is FREE. This should be a great asset to all genealogy researchers. www.cem.va.gov Loretta
