Judith, sounds like William, son of Henry and Honor Durbin: Chidley Matthew 2-28-1812, Margaret 1815, and maybe the girl I know as Honora born 1819. William's first wife, and I believe mother of his children, was Sarah Chidley Matthews. Second wife, whom he married about 1833, was Anna Maria Dugan. ********************************* > I just found this in: > > Diocese of Columbus-Bulletin, Vol 1, January 1975, No.1 > ==== > Early Baptisms Records of St. Joseph's, Somerset, Ohio > > Oct. 27 1819 Matthew, Margaret and Hannah Mattingly, of William and Mary > ==== > > Any body know who they are??? Henry Mattingly died on 7-24-1866 at the age of 80 years, 9 months, and 7 days. His wife, Sarah, died 1-7-1868 at the age of 78 years, 9 months and 7 days. Both are buried in the Bethel Cemetery in Veale, Daviess County, Indiana on county road 50 west, about three miles south of Washington, Daviess County, Indiana. There were many Mattingly's in Daviess County, Indiana and some of them were descendants of John Baptist Mattingly and Ann Spalding. Grandsons, John B. 1814, Augustus 1806, Raphael 1807, James 1809, and Sylvester 1801 were a few. A grand-daughter Mary Ann Mattingly Taylor was another as well as Matilda Mattingly Quiggins. Many of these are buried in St. Peters Cemetery in Veale, Veale Creek Cemetery, and Bethel Cemetery near Henry and his wife Sarah. Each of these were children of John Mattingly and Mary Ann Wimsatt. I wonder if Henry is somehow related to this line but I can't place Henry at all unless it was Henry, son of John Townley who had married Sara Larily in 1810. I am not so certain that this Henry was in fact a son of John Townley either. There was a Henry Mattingly on the 1810 census of Mason County, between the ages of 16 and 25 but he had no children at the time.
Bill--these sound like some of my grgrgrandfather's Mattinglys. He was John Hilary Mattingly b. 1841 and had a brother, William. Let me check and get back to you. Shirley
Can anyone help me with this one? The 1910 census of Washington, Daviess County, Indiana shows Charles E. Mattingly aged 60. His wife was Indiana Unknown aged 53. They had just one child who was deceased by 1910. The 1880 census of Daviess County, Indiana shows Charles E. Mattingly aged 28 with wife Indiana aged 2, and one son, George A. age 4. The couple were residing next door to Charles father: William Mattingly aged 50 and Lydia 32. 1870 finds William in Harrison, Daviess County, Indiana aged 41 and his wife Margaret was 52 (I believe a 2nd wife). Children in the home: John S. (maybe L.) aged 16, Sarah 18, Eliza E. 15, Charles E. 19, and Mary 7. 1860 shows William in Van Buren, Daviess County, Indiana aged 32 and wife Nancy 29. Children were: Charles 10, Sarah Jane 8, Liza Ellen 5, and Mary Elena 1. During 1850 William was aged 23. In the home were Jane 73 (likely his mother or Grand-mother), Nancy 20 (William's wife), Eliza 35, and Elizabeth 25. The latter I presume were sisters. The 1840 census shows several Mattingly's but the likely father of William was Henry, between the ages of 30 and 40. Henry had one son 5 to 10, one 10 to 15, and one 15 to 20. Daughters: One 10 to 15 and one 15 to 20. The eldest woman was 40 to 50. I have no idea who this Henry was but it does not seem to be the Henry who helped found St. Augustine, Illinois although their age is close.
Audrey: Thank you so much for the information. I find that I have absolutely nothing on John Jr's son Robert Vitalis beyond the information you have just given me. Thanks so much. Eleanor, I'm stressed for time at the moment and have not been able to read all the items in today's digest, but Eleanor Porter Winter Mattingly was my step-great great great grandmother. She married John Mattingly, widow of Onea Arnold Mattingly. All these lived ion Allegany Count MD. I have much more on these people, but am not sure just what you are looking for. Fr. Hello, Has anyone found these folks in their research for Mattinglys? This John Mattingly died in 1849 at the age of 43. I'm interested in any information that may be available. Thanks so much! Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York
Does anyone have any information on the marriage of a John Mattingly to an Eleanor Winter in Allegany Co., MD on January 24, 1829? Just curious. Thanks, Elizabeth
I'm researching James MATTINGLY, b. 1832 in VA, son of John MATTINGLY, b. 1798 and Susan(a) HOWARD DOTZLER or DUTZLER, b. ± 1837. James and Susan were married in DC before 1865 or 1857. Lynda
I believe that I may have read something on this list recently about Mattinglys in Allegany County, MD. Is there someone researching them? I'm still trying to find my elusive John Mattingly and wife....John being the son of John Mattingly and Ann Carbery Mattingly. I note that Allegany County is just north of the Hampshire/Hardy County area of WVA. According to obit and death certificate information, my great grandfather, Thomas Joseph Mattingly was born in Moorefield, VA which is in Hardy County. Thanks so much! I had thought that George had moved to Kentucky and that he appeared there on the 1820 census but now I'm wondering if that was true. We've discussed this George several times and he seems to appear on the 1860 census of Washington, DC at age 59 with wife Mary 58 and children: John 25, Sienna 20, and Clara Brown 24. I think George was the son of George Mattingly and Elizabeth Wimsatt and the age is fairly close and according to reports George married Mary Shannon on 6-23-1823, supposedly in Kentucky, but again I wonder if this is accurate. The children of George and Mary were reportedly: Catherine Arthelia, George E., Cordelia, John H., Sienna, Clara V., and Martina. This looks pretty much like the same family, minus a few children, in DC. during 1860.
The 1850 census of New Haven, Connecticut shows a George Mathingby aged 17 and born England as an apprentice for Thomas Phillips. This looks suspiciously like a Mattingly when viewing the actual census. By 1860 there are several persons named Matthingly in New Haven, all reportedly born in England: Robert 69, Sarah 45, Mary A. 26, John 22, and Arthur 9. I believe these were all Mattingly's.
I see James and Susan on the 1860 census as you stated but 1850 census finds James aged 18 and living in the home of Charles Schusler. Again James is shown as born in Virginia and his occupation was Tanner. Same as in 1860. I have to admit to a lot of confusion here as well. From the 1850 census it would not look as if James was married at the time. If he was then his wife and children did not make the census unless those children shown in 1860 were not his and possibly were not Mattingly's. Actually, he would have been only about 14 when the 13 year old Charles A. was born. None of the three children with Susan during 1880 were present in 1860 but that's as expected. I've hunted in vain for signs of this family during 1870. Apparently James died between 1870 and 1880 but his family should have been someplace in 1870.
