    3. Just thinking out loud, so to speak. We're all familiar with the Ignatius, Sr. and Jr. of the Thomas II line (Ignatius, Sr. 1704 to 1789 and 1750 for Jr. to 1807). The early census records of Maryland (1790, 1800, and 1810) show both an Ignatius, Sr. and Jr. during each year. We might surmise these two men were Ignatius, Jr. and III, at least through the year 1800. However in 1810 we still find an Ignatius, Sr. and Jr. Ignatius, IV was not born until 1811 and Ignatius, Jr. was dead by 1807. With only Ignatius, III still alive in 1810 (but may have been in Kentucky by this time), we're obviously looking at a 5th and possibly 6th, Ignatius (perhaps shown as a Jr. to differentiate between the two men). None of the other men named Ignatius and alive in the right time period, seem to fit. Example: Ignatius 1771, son of Leonard was married in Kentucky in 1789. However, there is one man who will fit. Peter Mattingly (son of James and grandson of Thomas, II) and Catherine Spalding reportedly had a son named Ignatius (birthdate unknown) but Peter and Catherine were married 11-1-1770, so this could be their son. They also had a son named Joseph who reportedly married a Deborah Dick. If I were going to guess (Heaven forbid) I would guess that this unknown Ignatius was the son of Peter and Catherine. Anyone seen anything else on Peter on his offspring? ***************************** Thank you for the information on Arnold Ignatius Mattingly. The >"Ignatius Mattingly - 1839" we were inquiring about apparently was born and >lived in Maryland. We have this Ignatius' will but to date, no one has been >able to share with us how he may been related to the other Mattingly >lineages.

    3. Hi. I tried to track down something on this Potter fellow. I found several William Potter's born early 1800's in England. Also several Potters in the Caribbean. I wish I know more abt history. Was any part of the U.S. considered part of the Barbados or Caribbean before there was a U.S.? Maybe Virginia was or maybe they lived on an Island that was under the juridiction of the Viginia colony. Or maybe even Nova Scotia was.??? I remember seeing some other Mattingly's in the Caribbean and the Isle of Wight, but I believe that it was much later than this.. If I remember it was a St. Thomas parish. not sure exactly where. I'll keep looking for Potter's and Mattingly's. I have come to the conclusion (just by jumping around all the Mattingly's from 1600 to present. That we are somehow related to one of the Ignatius's, a William, perhaps John Baptist, and Philip and maybe Leonard. I have also come to the conclusion that we are absolutely nuts for doing this! Why couldn't we have come from a not-so-prolific family, that stayed in one place, kept a good family Bible for centuries, and perhaps passed down their trade (and land) from generation to generation. Just think, we could be living near Oxford University near London, sitting on our tuffets eating our curds and whey. Maybe I would have been one of the Beatles or at least gotten to wear those cute London fashions! ha ha You would probaby have been the King's official Homeopathic Advisor or at least a Baron or a Ship Captain / Plantation owner in the Caribbean. I hinted for William to go to that Naval Museum i Roanoke. I bet their library has some stuff on our seafaring Mattingly's. Keep on paddlin' upstream. I am going to either work tomorrow or go to an Army reunion. So probably won't do much online this weekend. Have a good weekend. Have a blessed day, Bonnie

    2. I did find another entry for William Mattingly from VA: 17 April 1660. Edward Davis aged 33 and Henry Browne aged 19, servants of Thomas Davis of London, goldsmith, depose that on 27 April 1659 John Dade of London, merchant, signed a financial obligation to Thomas Potter of London, goldsmith. William Mattingley aged 23, servant of William Potter, citizen and clockworker of London, deposes that his master delivered goods to Dade on that date. Mr. Roger Kemmis of Barbados appointed attorney to recover from the estate of John Dade. (MCD 10). Also, does anyone have any documentation of Presbyterian Mattinglys from MD? I have come across a Mattingly in Frederick Co, MD but who was a member of the Emmitsburg Presbyterian Church.
