Does anyone know where HEM got the year of births for each of the children of Thomas III? I'm trying to separate out the data for James of Thomas II and James of Thomas III and I'm trying to get the dates right to get some other info to fit in. Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA
Joe, The Edward Mattingly that never married was the son of Thomas Mattingly and Elizabeth Warren and was born c. 1710. The other Edward that you mentioned was the son of Thomas IV and I think that this is Captain Edward Mattingly. I have seen reference to Thomas' IV wife being a Doyne but I can't find any clear evidence of this. His brother, James, married Elizabeth Doyne, daughter of Ignatius Doyne of Charles County. Paul
Thanks, All i have fits is these 2. Edward b.ca1710 son of Thomas and Elizabeth Warren. Edawrd b.1749/52 son of Thomas and --Doyne.This Edward is from The Marriages of St.Marys Co book.Second reference is from Dr.Thomas Gerrard Family. He was a Rev War veteran. He m. Martha (Patty) Simms. Also i had an Edward never married and left his estate to his neices and nephews or do i have the wrong name here? Judith and Joe, The only Edward that I have that would be a candidate to be the Edward that served in the Rev War was Edward son of Thomas IV. He is likely the Edward, Jr that is witness to the will of his cousin Dorothy Mattingly, daughter of James of Thomas III. Does anyone else have an Edward that would fit this Captain Edward Mattingly? Paul
Has anyone researched the Canadian Mattingly line at all? I am in correspondence with a lady named Brooke Mattingly of Southern Ontario whose lineage is as follows: Mattingley, Brooke 1981 Mattingley, Douglas, 1948 & Ruth Harshaw Mattingley, Gordon 1908 & Dorothy Cox Mattingley, Thomas 1888 & Hazel Buckborough Mattingley, William 1860 & Lizzie Fitzgerald Mattingley, William about 1835 & Sarah Church Possibly Mattingley, William I suspect Brooke's family ties in with the U. S. line at some point and have wondered if this might be descendants of the Ohio clan.

Does anyone have a couple named John and Harriet Mattingly? I have a DC land deed from 1828 listing them. Would be curious to know. Best regards, Elizabeth Culhane Fairport, New York
Me again. I noticed that a George Haden acted as surety to John Mattinglys estate. I wonder if this is the same George Hayden/Haden that acted as executor to the accounts of Peter Johnson, Grace's second husband (widow of John Mattingly)? Paul
I think that I have asked this questions before but does anyone know what "surety" means, as in "sureties: John Mattenly and George Haden". Is this someone acting as a guarantor that the debts of the estate will be paid? Paul
Joe, I assume that you are asking about the Edward Mattenly that received payments from John Mattingly's estate. It is assumed by most that this is Edward son of Thomas III. I have had some problems with this for a while but for no particular reason. It just seems odd that John's estate would be paying money to his 2nd cousin. However, it is presumed by Edward's multiple land dealings that he was "wealthy" and if John needed a loan then his second cousin would have been as good as any. HEM hints at the possibility that there were 2 Edwards in the mid 1700's but I can't seem to find any clear evidence that this was the case. Paul

Maybe someone has information on this Josie Mattingly and can share it with us. A cemetery listing for Sherman, Grayson County, Texas lists the following Mattingly's; each of whom are likely children, in-laws, and grandchildren of Josie. Mattingly, Adelia H. Miller 1880 to 1944 Mattingly, George 9-14-1879 to 9-19-1942 Mattingly, Josie E. 10-8-1858 to 1-1-1942 Mattingly, P. J. 12-8-1846 to 6-22-1893 (Josie's Wife?) Mattingly, Pauline 6-30-1883 to 10-15-1964 Mattingly, Ray 9-20-1881 to 8-10-1882 Mattingly, George Edward, Sr. 3-21-1913 to 9-27-1949 **************************** I am in the process of buying a house in Sherman, Grayson county TX that was previous owned by Josie MATTINGLY. He purchased 3 lots of land for $350 during June 1877 and built a house on the lots by 1887 according to the original locks still on the windows. At this point I do not know anything of he or his family. As I am into genealogy on all of my other lines, I thought it might be nice to learn about the original owner/builder of my new/old home. During November 1903, Josie MATTINGLY sold the home to AlLen H. and Winnie CHAMBERS. By any chance have you come across these names in your research of the MATTINGLY family?
I found a court deposition of John son of James of Thomas and Robert son of James of Thomas in the Charles County Land Records on 20 June 1769. Their ages are listed as 27 and 32, respectively. HEM lists their year of births as c. 1738 and c. 1740. This record would indicate that their birth years should have been 1742 and 1737, respectively. John and Robert are giving depositions regarding the location of a piece of property. I don't know why they would be in Charles County as I have indications that they were in SMC. Of course, these counties are right next door and they very possibly still had family ties there. Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA
I would't be surprised to learn that John and Dykeander were in Kentucky. Several of their children were so why not them as well. At times it seems nearly everyone was leaving Maryland. Course, there's enough Mattingly's left in Maryland that we won't have to worry about running out of people to research there for a long time. **************** P.S. Let me double check this but I think that the John Baptist that was >in KY applied for benefits that were owed to him from service in the >Revolutionary War and he lists his wife as Dyeander Boswell. Don't hold me >to that and I'll double check it tonight.
I just heard back from my Johnson family expert and he reports that it was "common knowledge" that Grace who married Peter Johnson was a Hayden that married John Mattingly and then Peter Johnson. He also reports that she was eventually married 5 times - outlasting 5 husbands. He tells me that there is another Johnson family expert and she cites this info in a book that she has written. Her last name is Conner but he couldn't remember much else. I'll keep you up-to-date as I find things.
P.S. Let me double check this but I think that the John Baptist that was in KY applied for benefits that were owed to him from service in the Revolutionary War and he lists his wife as Dyeander Boswell. Don't hold me to that and I'll double check it tonight.
William, This stuff cracks me up. I have not heard about the William who married Jane White but I noticed that HEM reports an article that appeared in the "Washington Star" in DC in 1916. The article reported that Edward Mattingly was born in 1779 (he had a brother named George who was born in 1801) and was the son of a William Mattingly who was married to Jane White.. Edward married Anne Knott in 1812 and had the 4 children that you named. The article claims that it was Edward's brother, Baptist Mattingly, that moved to Bardstown, KY and had 9 sons. HEM didn't give much credence to this article and I believe that Charley Moore also read the original articles and didn't have much faith in them being accurate. Now I don't have any info on these people but I suppose that William could have been the son of John of John of Cezar. This William was born in 1747 and would have been 32 when Edward was born. This William did have a brother named John Baptist (son of John of Cezar) but I think that most people believe that this is the John Baptist that married Dykeander Boswell in VA (HEM cites this as a ?? possibility). So we are back to the question of which John Baptist went to KY and this one apparently believes that it was the John Baptist of John of Cezar. Remember, my mother always said that there is always some truth to every rumor or myth.
See the email below from Norma telling where this data came from & that it was in error. It did get us looking at this William's data though. I am interested in the comment that some of the data attributed to Thomas II's descendants may be that of Cezar's descendants. One of these days I'll do some checking into that one. It might be why we can't find some of those connections we're looking for. It is listed in LDS as a death, not as a birth. That contributor made a mistake, but we need to note that in our research. I found this when I did a search for all William Mattinglys on LDS.
