3. All is back up as for the bad router How ever the work continues on the Genconnects and should not be used until we have them all finished and let the lists know they are open All this takes time we are into over 4000 messages working on the new Genconnect boards Things are still in some disarray and the admin. are stating to calm down and understand it better . I was able to resign ALL my Genconnects back as admin so am just quietly reading the list and watching things get repaired as this goes on. Lots of links dont work. Might be a good time for some one to create a data base on the other list , who might want to be in charge of that ? 1. Re: [MATTINGLY] Charles Mattingly
    2. Joe, As you probably know, there has been the "myth" for years about 3 brothers coming to America and one of them was a Charles Mattingly. I for one am inclined to believe that there may have been more Mattinglys that came to America but possibly at different times. I have found little info on other Mattinglys and I think many people have been looking for years. I did some work recently and came across a Charles Maingtn in Anne Arundel County, MD in 1701. He was a witness to a will (I can't remember for whom now). I don't know if this is Charles Mattingly or not and I haven't been able to find any other information on him (perhaps he died shortly after?). I also found a George Maininlee in Ann Arundel Co, MD in 1701 who was witnessing a will (can't remember whose) and again I have not found any info on him after that. And again, I don't know if this is actually George Mattingly or not. I also came across multiple entries in VA in the late 1600's for a John Matley/Motley/Mothly/Matlin (many, many spelling variations for the same man, I believe), a Thomas Manningne and a William Matley. I'll post more info on these late today, if I have time (busy, busy day). If anybody has any info on Mattinglys in early VA or MD, I'd appreciate hearing from them. Also, Joe, if this Greg Mattingly has any further info, I'd love to see it. Does he name his whole lineage? Did he list a son or sons of this Charles? Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA

It reads: Charles County Wills, J. S. 17, 242): "In the name of God Amen. I Henry Mattingly of Charles County in the state of Maryland being sick and weak in body but of sound and disposing mind, memory, and understanding, considering the certainty of death and the uncertainty of the time thereof and being desirous to settle my worldly affairs and thereby to be better prepared to leave this world when it shall please God to call me hence do therefore make and publish this, my last will and testament in manner and form following this is to say. First and principally I commit my Soul into the hands of Almighty God and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executor hereinafter to be named and after my debts and funeral charges are paid I devise and bequeath as follows: I will and devise unto Benj. Henry Mattingly, Zora Sophia Mattingly, and Ann Celestia Mattingly, my three children all of my real and personal estate to be divided in equal proportions share and share alike after all of my just debts are paid and funeral expenses. I devise and bequeath to my wife Eliza E. Mattingly five hundred dollars. But in case she should set up any claim in or to my estate and establish or recover them, this five hundred dollars shall be void. I constitute and appoint Benedict L. Higdon gardine to Benj. Henry Mattingly, Zora Sophia Mattingly, and Ann Celestine Mattingly, my three children and do hereby constitute and appoint Benedict L. Higdon to be sole Executor of this my last will and testament, revoking and annulling all former wills by me heretofore made, ratifying and confirming this and none other to be my last will and testament. In testimony whereof I have set my hand and seal this 20th day of November in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and fifty eight. Henry Mattingly Witnesses were Benj. H. Jameson, John L. Budd, and William L. Shirburn." Henry Mattingly Eliza E. Goodrick had entered into a marriage contract on 9-13-1850 and this is recorded in the Charles County Land records, liber R. H. M. 1, page 675. I will post that contract tomorrow but suffice it to say that this Eliza was his 2nd wife and not the same wife who bore his children (first wife was Elizabeth Sophia (Dent) Higdon.

    3. Maybe the problems also extend to Mattingly-L? I sent this message out last night and it was returned as undeliverable. ********************** Date: Thu, 28 Jun 2001 20:11:11 -0400 To: [email protected] From: William R Mattingly <[email protected]> Subject: Henry Mattingly of Zac Someone suggested changing the subject matter. Here's a good one to chew on. I have become intriqued with the issue of who was Henry, the son of Zachariah Mattingly, Jr. I, like most folks, carry Henry as born about 1810 and married to Jane Rebecca Burroughs on 8-20-1839. This may be inaccurate information. A booklet by Theodore L. Brownyard and recently sent to me by Tom Hubscher (a descendant of Henry Mattingly), raises the possibility that we have the wrong Henry. There were two on the census of 1850; one in St. Mary's County and married to Jane and a 2nd in Charles County and married to Eliza. This Eliza was Elizabeth Sophia (Dent) Higdon, whose first husband was Benedict L. Higdon. What really leads me to believe this Henry of Charles County was actually the son of Zachariah Mattingly, Jr. is mention of the following deed (which I have not yet seen but hope someone may have at their disposal or can locate): Charles COunty Deeds GWC #2, page 37, made 30 November 1864 by Ignatius Pike which conveyed the tract of land called "Sarum or Old Sarum" (about 1,000 acres) to Zorah S. Mattingly, Benjamin H. Mattingly, and Ann C. Mattingly, children and heirs of Henry Mattingly, deceased. In the deed, Henry is called "Henry of Zac" meaning son of Zachariah. The Henry of St. Mary's County is referred to as "Henry of John". I don't know which John yet. The writings of Mr. Brownyard also contain transcribed copies of the wills of the Henry above, and Zachariah, Jr. (will proved 1-17-1837). Judith has already posted the will of Zachariah and I will post the will of Henry tonight on a separate post.

    2. J, It is not Karen who has the family posted that way, it is Melissa Thompson Alexander. She shows Karen as the source of her post but from what I have seen of Karen material on Margaret Cash, that is in error. I am also listed as a source but only as to James Mattingly's dates. See cut & Paste below. Her data file as of May 28 was 64,000 plus and growing. Bob ID: I49054 Name: William MATTINGLY 1 Sex: M Birth: BET. 1802 - 1808 Father: James MATTINGLY b: 1783 in Prince William Co, VA Mother: Margaret CASH b: 1780 Sources: Title: Karen Fowler Caldwell [email protected] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------- >From Karen Fowler Caldwell James Mattingly left 2 children at the time of his death. They were Ann "Nancy" Mattingly who married William Wheatley and Caleb Mattingly who married Sarah Priscilla Maddox. There are guardian bonds at the Washington Co. Courthouse and Charles Browning was appointed as their guardian. Also, Washington Co. Deed Book D, page 195, 12/19/1812, William Cambron and Rebecca, his wife convey to Caleb and Ann Mattingly, heirs of James Mattingly, deceased, 100 acres of land on Cartwright's Creek. (James paid taxes on this land in 1808 and his entry for 1809 lists James as deceased). This seemed strange to me since both Caleb and Ann were still minors at this time but their mother had already married Charles Browning. In James Mattingly's probate records there shows a payment to William Cambron. I assume that James had bought this land but still owed money on it at the time of his death. When the property was finally paid for, the land was deeded to his heirs. I don't have paper proof in front of me on the William Wheatley and can remember nothing about him off the top of my head. I will have to dig out some folders later and find my proof for him. It may have been through a court case that the two were involved in or perhaps when they sold this property. > From: "J" <[email protected]> > To: <[email protected]> > Sent: Thursday, June 28, 2001 7:29 AM > Subject: Re: [MATTINGLY] Mattingly/Bullock > > > > Karen, > > I see you have on Rootsweb a William as the son > > of James Mattingly and Margaret Cash.Couldnt find a mention > > of him in the court papers.Think its time to go on to a new subject??? >

    3. For better access to the wills you can upload them to the other list web site I think I can set it so you dont have to be a member to share that area , Rootsweb , Ancestry and My Family are doing a lot of web site work and from time to time those pages will be a little hard to access . Looking forwards to it being all done, but for now it is rather unstable . I only created the other list to give you a workshop area where every one can share pictures and ged comes via list with out having to ask for it . The list web site is 20 megs and is accessible and useable by the members , you can upload things and download them at will . The Genconnects are being reworked into one entity and have been a head ache so far . When they are done they will be merged with MyFamily.com and a part of Ancestry , more powerful search's will then be available providing they dont crash the whole thing <G> A few things about the other list 1 - 20 meg website 2 - you can subscribe and go NOMAIL then read it via web mail any where in the world from any ones system with your website password - never have to down load mail to be a member . But you can be on regular mail if you wish = 3 - the 20 meg web site has a place you can make folders with your name to share your files, pictures and ged coms , you can put them up or take them down as you wish , but you will always be in control of them , we use it a lot on the Matney Forum and like it. I have the web tag lines set so they should come up in the search engines in the first 25 hits, if not let me know and I will program it so it does I hope. I am hoping the merger with Ancestry, and Rootsweb, and MyFamily is going to be a good thing, and not some mass membership plot to charge people when its all done. 1. Re: [MATTINGLY] Wm. Mattingly again
    2. Karen Fowler posted the item below on James Mattingly and Margaret Cash and a lot more if you want. But no son William is noted. Bob Alvey From Karen Fowler Caldwell James Mattingly left 2 children at the time of his death. > > I have a William died in Washington Co son of James Mattingly > and Margaret Cash but no verification. > >
