    1. [MATTINGLY] Re: Mattingly of Charles County
    2. There is at a mention of a James Mattingly in Charles County: "Whereas James Mattingly this day brought before me a small gray mare, branded on the near shoulder and buttock, thus [shows a zero with a strikeover], which sd Mattingly says is troublesome to his plantation. This is to certify that Mattingly has liberty to use the sd mare. Signed Jul 7, 1753 Willm Eilbeck. Recorded Jul 11, 1753." CHARLES COUNTY, MARYLAND, LAND RECORDS 1752-1756, no author; TLC Genealogy; Miami Beach FLA; 1996. I assume that this is James of Thomas III who married Elizabeth Doyne. There is also a mention of John Mattingly in Charles County: Deed of June 2, 1732, recorded June 9, 1732 by Thos. Dyson Sr of Charles County, witnessed by Geo: Dent, John [his J mark] Mattingly. Land bought from Samuel and Mary Amery. [CHARLES COUNTY MARYLAND LAND RECORDS, 1722-1733; nho author; TLC Genealogy; Miami Beach FLA; 1994.] I'm not sure which John this is but more than likely it is son of Cezar. 1. [MATTINGLY] Raymond Allen Mattingly
    2. William R Mattingly
    3. Trying to find info to help a lady learn about her grandfather, Raymond Allen Mattingly. Raymond was likely born between 1900 and 1920 and married a Phyliss Ruth Brewer. The couple had four children before they were divorced: Deborah Ruth, Linda Marie, Julie Anna, and Pamela Sue. Following the divorce the children of Raymond lost all contact with their father and one of his grand-daughters would like to learn her ancestry. It is possible that Raymond married again after his divorce to a Helen Marie Miller. Anyone having any leads to a Raymond Allen Mattingly, please contact me. If additional info becomes available, such as years of birth, marriage, etc. I'll post it at once. Thanks!

    3. Buried at St. Ambrose Church, Union Co., Ky., is Jesse L. Mattingly. His tombstone says he was b. Feb. 14, 1893 and d. Oct. 22, 1918. According to his Army record, Jesse, was from Henshaw (Union Co.) and was born Grove City (also Union Co.). He died during the flu epidemic at Camp Zachary Taylor, Ky., while in training. Person notified of his death was Elisha C Mattingly, a brother, of RFD 2, Morganfield, Ky. Does anyone know who Jesse and Elisha's parents were? If so, please share. I'm hung up on this one and extremely curious. Thanks, Ruth Mattingly

    3. I regretfully can't provide any proof but from what I've seen, Andrew and Eliza had a son named Andrew, Jr. born about 1822 that married Malinda Eubanks. This couple had at least one child named George Washington born about 1847. My reasoning for this is that on the 1850 census the 68 year old Andrew is still living with his wife, Eliza and 28 year old Andrew is living with Malinda, almost next door. I'm not sure whether the younger children residing with the elder Andrew are his and Eliza's children or grandchildren. Eliza was 48 at the time but still within childbearing age. There is also a 25 year old Elijah Mattingly living with Oliver and Amanda Clark that could have been another son of the elder Andrew. **************** I need help, I've managed to confuse myself. This goes back to the time of John Townley Mattingly, He had a son, Andrew b. abt. 1782. Andrew married Eliza who was b. abt. 1802. Now my question is: Did they have a son named Andrew b. abt. 1822 in KY who married Malinda Eubanks 6/1846? or did the first Andrew marry a second time to Malinda Eubanks? Appreciate any help. 3. Ann Melvina was a daughter of John W. Mattingly, born 1823 and Eliza Ann Newton. This is the line of Joseph Mattingly and Hessina Hinton (these would have been Melvina's gt grandparent's. Her grandparents were Barton Mattingly and Anna Smith. You have several cousins on this line. Two are Bonita and Paul. I'm sure you'll likely hear from them shortly also. I know I would love to exchange info with you and while I won't speak for the others, I feel fairly certain they would as well. The only children I knew about for Richard and Melvina were John, Ben, Susan, and Eddie. Can you accept a GEDCOM file of about 13,000 names? **************** am looking for family of Ann Melvinia Mattingly (b 12/1845 Ky) who married Basil Richard Willett (b 3/25/1839 Marion Co, Ky) on Oct 15, 1861. 2. Elizabeth, I have been following your plight for some time regarding info on Ann Carberry, etc.. Unfortunately, I think that you are in the same boat that I'm in and I think that has a lot to do with the fact that not much info has been made available for documents in MD from about 1770 up to 1790. Also, unfortunately, I don't have much info on your John Mattingly. However, everytime I think about these people I always think that the answer is simple but yet, I can't seem to solve the problem. Let me think about it some more while I'm resting my brain from my Mattingly mindbender. Can you give me a quick run down of what you have? Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA

    1. [MATTINGLY] Margaret Cash - James Mattingly
    2. Melissa, You are aware, I'm sure,  that the Family Search IGI is only as good as the Mormon or non-Mormon who posted the data into the Family IGI database.   Also, there wasn't a good catholic girl alive in that time that was baptized Nancy.  The priests would only recognize saints names and the people in this region listed to what the prists had to say.  Nancy was a nickname and didn't come into its own as a given name among catholic families until nearly 1880.  No biggie I guess but I,  just out of pattern,  change any name Nancy in the early 1800's to Ann "Nancy"  And as you also know Matney was a common misspelling of Mattingly.  When I have been to KY especially in the Marion Co area, they do not say Matt-ing-ly, they say Mangly.  Took me sometime to realize that Mangly was Mattingly. Only made a fuss about your reference since Karen Fowler was so emphatic that there were only two children.  Thought you would want to made the correction since it has been bantied around the Mattingly list for a few days and wouldn't die and your database is so frequently used by so many on the Mattingly list. Didn't mean to offend you. sorry. 3. Tom the Manor of Sarum is a very beautiful looking place. Suprising that it's so well taken care of compared to some I've seen. I lived in Woodbridge, Virginia for about 9 years and spent a lot of time in Maryland but that was before I had gotten interested in genealogy. That area around Washington sort of scares me nowdays but I can get to Maryland without going through that area. I think I'll plan a trip back this Summer and start exploring some myself. Thanks for sending them. I need to sit down and start making some changes to some files. I've written to Judith a bit and she seems inclined toward the Charles County Henry as a son of Zachariah as well.

    1. Re: [MATTINGLY] Henry Mattingly of Zac
    2. William R Mattingly
    3. Mr. Brownyard has done some wonderful research. On the first page he discusses the Manor of Sarum, near Newport, in Charles County by simply stating that Henry had purchased the manor. Later, on page 12, he recounts that on 11-30-1864, Ignatius Pike conveyed the property called Sarum's Manor to Zora S. Mattingly, Benjamin H. Mattingly, and Ann C. Mattingly. The deed states that Henry Mattingly died before he had paid the full purchase price of "Sarum's" to Ignatius Pike from whom he bought it and notes further that since the death of Henry Mattingly, his Executor, Benedict L. Higdon, had paid the whole amount of the purchase money still due when he died. Henry Mattingly gave his bond to Ignatius Pike on 9-9-1853 in the total sum of $15,000 for the purchase of Sarum and other lands. Wonder how much that $15,000 would be worth in todays dollars? Anyway, without having seen the deeds which refer to Henry as "Henry of Zac" which implies Henry of Zachariah Mattingly, Jr., I think I am about prepared to change my opinion of which Henry was the real son. Of the children of this Henry; Zora Sophia married Samuel G. Lancaster on 7-26-1865. Her age at the time was stated as 20 years, 11 months. Per Mr. Browndyards calculations that made her born in August 1844. Zora had no children. The daughter, Ann Celestia married Thomas Ward on 6-5-1868 when she was 19 and had three sons: Henry M.; Samuel Vaughn; and Arthur T Ward. Ann's will was made 7-22-1872 and proved 3-23-1880. She left her property to her children and her sister, Zora was appointed guardian of her children. The son of Henry, Benjamin Henry was the father of 13 children. His first wife was Mary Ann Brooke with whom he had 8 (James Frank; Rose L.; Laura Ann; Henry B.; Zora M.; Edwardina; Adrian T.; and Alphonsus Zachariah); 2nd wife was Ledwin F. Corry but had no children; and by the 3rd wife, Dola A. Gibbons, he had 5 (Benjamin S.; Mary Kent; Hilda A.; Sylvester Gibbons; and John Fannon). Tom Hubscher is currently looking for copies of the deeds mentioned and hopefully this will help us determine which Henry belongs here as the son of Zachariah, Jr. Still, I'm perplexed as to who this John is that is referenced by Mr. Brownyard when he refers to "Henry of John". Like Judith, the only Henry of John that I know of, was not in St. Mary's County and was married to Susanna Albright and Christina Lydic (this was Henry, son of John Mattingly and Onea Arnold). ********************** William, this is great research! I have found only one Henry of John so far, Henry d 1873 son of John Mattingly b. June 1,1773/ Onea Honor Arnold, but they are in Allegany County, MD, and this Henry died in 1873. We don't have when the Will was proved, do we? He could have signed it in 1858 if he was determined not to get caught short with not having one made after his second marriage and prenuptial agreement. This is the Cezar line, I think. JB
