    3. Judith, I was so prepared to be wrong I failed to notice your William A. born 1893 so I'm still in the ballpark. I just don't know who this Leonard E. is that's buried out in Oklahoma. Census records indicate he was born in Kentucky but that doesn't mean a lot. Nor does the 1858 birthdate as those are occasionally wrong too. I'm back to the drawing board on a Leonard E. born 1858 per the headstone records of Calvary Catholic Church in Tulsa. I don't think I have another Leonard born that year in the files but will keep looking. Thanks again for the info.

Very, very unfortunately, it says just that - John Mattingly, Sr - executors John, Jr and Amos Mattingly - accounts passed. No indication of who these people were. I also had a copy of James Maginly's will and Francis Alexander's will to determine if James Maginly may have been James Mattingly as HEM had indicated in his book "Mattinglys in Early America". The will of James Maginley is clearly James Maginley. The Maginley's were Scot Presbyterians from the northern part of Frederick Co, MD and Adams Co, PA. Their lineage is clear and this is not James Mattingly as I had hoped. Additionally, he names his sons, Amos and John and 2 grandsons, each called James. If these had been Mattinglys then I suspect that he would have named a grandson John, son of John who was the executor for the John that died in 1773. The will of Francis Alexander is not very clear. He mentions moiety in the hands of James Maginly. However, there appears to be a clear correction over the "G" in Maginly that could be either a "TT", "N" or an "M". I'd give it a 50/50 chance that the scribe wrote Maginly and meant to change it to Mattinly. One transcriber of the will indicates that he thinks that the name should have been Mattingly, while another indicates that he thinks that the name should be Maginley. Unless there was a James Maginly and a James Mattingly living near Francis Alexander, then I'd bet that there was a James Maginly but no James Mattingly. So, obviously there was a John, Sr, John, Jr and Amos Mattingly in Frederick Co, MD in 1773 but I still have no idea of who these people were. Assuming that John, Jr was at least 18 in 1773, he would have been born before 1755 and John Sr, would have been born before 1735. I see no John Mattinglys that fit into the Mattingly family tree at this time. Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA >> [email protected]

    2. Judith, et al., How interesting. HEM wrestled with the possibility that there were 2 Clement Mattinglys, one in SMC and another in AAC and I had concluded the same. Oddly, both married women named Ann but otherwise they appeared to be 2 separate individuals. I suppose that they could be one in the same. However, the odd item that sticks out is that Clement Mattingly of SMC did not mention or name a wife in his will, while clearly she was alive in 1784. Why would this be?

    2. I had a copy of the transcription of the November 1784 court proceedings of AAC pulled regarding Clement Mattingly's estate vs Eden and Court. Unfortunately, HEM gave the wrong reference and sent me on a wild goose chase but I was able to find the correct book. In the November court there are a number of proceedings of Thomas Eden and Christopher Court, merchants of Middlesex County, England against various people of AAC. One is against the estate of Clement Mattingly. This Clement Mattingly is the one that married Ann Burton Coyle and who died apparently before 1784. Unfortunately, the court proceedings do not give any indication of the relationship of Clement but it does name Thomas McWilliams, Ann Mattingly & Joseph Stone and wife, as executors of Clement Mattingly. So, I still need further documentation but it would seem to indicate that perhaps Clement immigrated to America from England (since he still had dealings with merchants in Middlesex County, England). It may be presumptive, but it also seems to indicate that Clement did not have male heirs. Perhaps he had a daughter who married Joseph Stone? Thomas McWilliams? Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA

    1. [MATTINGLY] Mattingly, Suttle, Price, Melton, Howard, Power, Graves
    2. I had a copy of the original court transcriptions pulled for the court case in 1718 involving the location of "St Lawrence" in SMC brought about by John Greaves (Graves?). John Greaves apparently in purchasing the land wished to determine its boundaries and called into court, Edward Price (age 54), Mary Howard (age 50 daughter of Thomas Melton), Thomas Mattinly (aged 30), Thomas Turner, Casare Mattinly (aged 64) and Nicholas Powers (son of Nicholas Powers). Mr. Edward Price gives deposition that the tract called "St Lawrence" was in sight of Thomas Turner's plantation and near the tract of land called "Great St. Thomas" and one called "St. Barberry" Mary Howard gives deposition that "St Lawrence" lay near Thomas Turner's land. Thomas Mattingly gives deposition that he always heard that "St. Lawrence" lay near Thomas Turner's land. Thomas Turner gives the following deposition: "Sworn as afd. as he was clearing the high ways, heard Cezar Mattinly's wife say she heard her mother say she wish'd the land called "St. Lawrence" then purchased by the afd John Greaves might not prejudicie one Jn. Suttle her brother who she doubted was settled on the land called St. Lawrence. Suttle now lives near the said land of Turners and Powers afd and further saies not." Cezare Mattinly gives deposition that St. Lawrence lays 3 miles from the loading place of Chaptico and near the land of Thomas Turner. Nicolas Powers (son of Nicholas Powers) gives deposition that St. Lawrence ws near the land that he now lives on called "St Barberry and near Mr. Turners. The deposition given by Mr. Turner does not indicate clearly whose brother is John Suttle. It may be either Cezar's wife's brother or Cezar's wife's mother's brother. It does indicate that this John Suttle was the younger John Suttle and not the elder John Suttle that died in 1680. Therefore, either Cezar married the daughter of Jane or Mary Suttle (daughters of the elder John Suttle and sisters to the younger John Suttle) or he married Jane or Mary Suttle. Because Jane and Mary were not of age in 1680 when their father died, it would indicate that they were younger than 16 years of age or born c. 1666?. If Cezar married either Jane or Mary Suttle then he would have been approximately 11 years older than either of them. If he married either of their daughters then he would have been approximately 30 years older than his wife. I am more inclined to believe that Cezar married either Jane or Mary Suttle (daughter of the elder Suttle and not Mary Suttle, widow of the elder Suttle, who married Cezar's brother, Thomas). The book also lists the same year (2 Sep 1762), a John Baptist Mattingley buying 46 acres "Grave's Swamp" in SMC. (RefBC16/403,BC19/248). Maybe these were the James and John of Charles Co..?

He was the son of William Alvin Mattingly 9-26-1893 to 9-30-1971 and Teresa Ann Gordon 6-18-1899 to 1989. William Alvin and Teresa had the following children: Raymond Allen; William; Leonard; Robert L.; James L. Charles H. 7-18-1929 to 5-6-1972; Roy G.; Carl B.; Ruth; Julia Marie; Dorothy Anne; and Clara Elizabeth. Raymond, his parents, and brother Charles are buried at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I have not yet connected William Alvin with his Kentucky lineage but am working on it. If anyone has a connection, I am in contact with Raymond's grand-daughter and will share information if wanted.

    3. The Raymond Allen Mattingly I'm looking for was reportedly born either April or May 17, 1936 and at one time resided in Oklahoma. He also had a twin sister named Ruth who reportedly became a Catholic Nun. Efforts to locate her through the Church have failed. Does anyone know how one might go about finding a Nun who is apparently now using her Christian name which is regretfully unknown. Any help appreciated.

    2. William, thanks for the condolences and yes she did have a very happy and healthy life. Up until two months before she died she was still working two days a week as a volunteer at the hospital gift shop! Rhonda
