Bob---- Thanks so much for the information, and I am sure my cousin, a descendant of John Lucas Mattingly, will appreciate the information as well. Like my own Mattingly ggrandfather, John Lucas migrated his family to Texas in the late 1800's and settled and lived out his life in Newcastle, Young County, Texas. Ralph, Another Jesse Mattingly, not Jesse L Mattingly born abt 1833 too early for Jesse L. For what its worth since I don't have this information well sourced but I show the Jesse you are talking about as Jesse Mattingly b. 3/24/1833 in Clay Co, KY, he married Mary Jane "Mollie" Asher in Clay Co, KY and they were parents of John Lucas Mattingly b. abt 1857. This information I received from a Kathleen MacFarland, descendant of John Lucas. I show this Jesse as the son of William Mattingly(1804-1893) and Aisley Alice Bowling, William is the son of Ignatius Mattingly(1781-1833) and Mary Ann Daft, Ignatius is the son of Ignatius Mattingly(1737-1807) and Eleanor Shircliffe and Ignatius is the son of Ignatius Mattingly(1704-1789) and Sarah ?? and Ignatius is the son of Thomas Mattingly, II and second wife Elizabeth. Pretty much the same as yours except a few of my dates are a bit different Bob Alvey > Bob, et al------ > I have a Jesse Mattingly, b. after 1804, son of (s/o) William, s/o > Ignatius > (1775-1833), s/o Ignatius (1737-ca.1807), s/o Ignatius (1704-ca.1789), s/o > of > > Thomas II. > Jesse was the father of John Lucas Mattingly, an ancestor of a distant > cousin > of mine who I am acquainted with on the net. > Any connections here with the Jesse Mattingly you are talking about? > Ralph Banks ([email protected]), Austin, TX >

Barbara, Thanks very much but that is another Jesse Mattingly, b. 1/27/1880 in Daviess Co, KY, son of Martin Spalding Mattingly. The M S Mattingly in the 1880 Daviess Co, KY census was Martin Spalding Mattingly, son of George Mattingly and Sarah Miles. Martin Spalding Mattingly married Annie Belle Morland, dau of Jesse P Morland and Mary Unknown. I will post this to the group and hoping you don't mind just in case other Mattingly researchers are looking for this one as well. You have added some information I had not picked up on the siblings of Annie Belle Morland. I'm related to all the Alvey's in Daviess Co who all descend from a Henry Alvey b abt 1785 in St Mary's Co, MD. His sister Susannah Alvey is my GGGGgrandmother. Ruth, Jesse L Mattingly has been driving me mad for some time as well and I wish I could tell you who his parents were. I have found some information on his family which I will send here in hopes it might fit with something you have discovered. After seeing your message, I went to the national archives here in Laguna Niguel last week and checked out the 1900 Mattingly soundex for KY, IN & IL with no luck in finding Jesse L who I figured should be listed as a 7 year old in 1900 along with his brother who I figure is Elisha Clarence Mattingly age about 12. I checked 1910 KY and no luck there either although I believe that the Clarence Mattingly and his wife Effie are listed in Union Co, KY as newly weds in the 1910 census is the same as Elisha Clarence. I also found Elisha C Mattingly in the 1920 Union Co, KY census with Effie and three children. I also found the obit for a Jesse L Mattingly, Sr b. 5/24/1919 in Union Co, KY mother was Effie Russell, wife of Elisha C Mattingly. He died in Owensboro in 12/30/2000. Lots left unknown about this family. Also I have not seen the tombstone but Peyton Heady's listing of St Ambrose shows Jesse as Jesse E Mattingly and it says killed in WWI? Have you seen the tombstone or found a death record? Did oyu see his miliatry records to know he was killed in Camp Zachary Taylor? Isn't Camp Zachary Taylor in Union Co? I have a grandmother buried in the national cemetery by the same name in Louisville. Several of the other Mattingly's buried in St Ambrose were of the family of William Taylor Mattingly, Sr, one of several sons of Anselum Austin Mattingly whom I know little about. There is also a Charles G Mattingly 1865-1941 who I believe is the son of Charles Gibson Mattingly, Sr, another Union Co, KY family I know little about. None of them seemed to have died in KY except William Taylor Mattingly but they are buried in the St Ambrose Cemetery see charts below. (Kidwell) Mattingly Submitted by: [email protected] (Phyllis Hill) MATTINGLY KIDWELL GOOTEE WALKER History of Knox and Daviess Counties, Indiana Chicago: The Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1886 Daviess County, Barr Twp., page 821 JOHN MATTINGLY was born in Daviess County, Ind., in 1826, and is a son of Henry and J. (Kidwell) Mattingly, the former born in 1804 and the latter in 1794, in Kentucky. They grew to maturity in their native State. After their marriage they came to Daviess County and followed the lives of farmers. Both parents died in 1871. John received a limited education, owing to the undeveloped condition of the schools at that time, and at the age of twenty- two began to make his own way in the world. After living on rented farms for about three years he purchased 145 acres of timber land, which he has since increased to 185 acres. In 1853 he was married to Mary A. Gootee, born in 1825, daughter of Silas and Barbara (Walker) Gootee. Her father was a native of Maryland and her mother of Kentucky. They were married in the mother's home State, and came to Indiana where the father farmed. Mr. and Mrs. Mattingly became the parents of five children: James M., Harriet A., Silas H., Albert S. and William A. The family are Catholics, and Mr. Mattingly is a Democrat and cast his first vote for Lewis Cass, of Michigan.
Hi cousin Kathie. So nice to make your acquaintance. I did get your download. Thanks! I will print it out and check against my stuff as soon as I find time. Hope you are feeling all better. I was sick also (colitis) and have to go get those yucky scope things done later this month. I wonder if colon problems run in the Mattingly family or if everybody is just geting sick from bad diets and stress. I would love to go graveyard hunting here is Kentucky one weekend. I have never even seen Joseph's gravesite. I understand Barton's is not even marked. I have been thinking of starting a fund to buy him and Anna a marker. Let me know if you want to go one Saturday. Maybe we can start a group to kind of clean up the site. With all us Mattingly descendants, it shouldn't be too hard to do. Do you want me to make copies of all the hard copies of stuff I have ? We can get together and go over it or I can just mail it. I am beat tonight. More later. Stay in touch. Have a blessed day, Bonnie

Looking at old notes I noticed one son of John Baptist Mattingly and Grace Brewer was James Barton. I've just found Grace Barton born 30 Aug. 1656, daughter of William Barton Jr. This isn't the wife of John Baptist Mattingly, but I think she is a mother or aunt to the Grace we have been looking for. Grace was not a common name, she had to be named for this Grace. And the James Barton ties them together too. Still looking! I have a lot of Brewer info saved. Norma >>

I show the same thing Bob does and the only thing I can add is that Susan and John were married near the home of Henry Payne. The 1850 census shows her living in Marion County (the part of Washington County they lived in became part of Marion). Her son Thomas was living with her as well as a Nancy Mattingly who was "maybe" a daughter of Susan's brother, Peter. Peter was residing in the home of another sister, Mary and Russell Payne. ********************** >I show her as Susan Elizabeth Mattingly, dau of John Mattingly, Sr and Mary >"Polly" Fenwick. Haven't had the time to give your site the attention it deserves yet but am very impressed with what I have seen. Thank you for letting us have the address. William Mattingly
Actually Paul, you are not the last to figure it out. I probably am, but I'm happy to accept your logic as it's quite good and I thank you for your reasoning ability. I likely would have not come to that conclusion on my own. There was however another Clement. Likely not as old as the first (probable born between 1750 and 1760) but he was in Washington County, Maryland during the 1783 Tax rolls. This Clement disappears from Maryland and appears in Kentucky about the same time as the other Mattingly's of Washington County: Joseph, Richard, Barnett. He remains on the Kentucky records until 1810. I would speculate that this Clement was the figure from whom many of the Matney clan come and this could be true but so far no-one seems to know much about him. It's my theory that he was of the Cezar line as nearly all (maybe all) of those from Washington, Allegany Counties were. **************** I need a volunteer to come forward to admit that they did not figure out the Clement of SMC vs the Clement of AAC so that I won't feel like I was the last to figure it out. Duh. HEM spectulated that there were 2 different Clement Mattinglys in the mid to late 1700's. There seems to be a very prominent Clement Mattingly who married very well. He was married to Ann Burton Coyle whose family were very large land owners and apparently were related to the Carroll's of MD. The second Clement was in SMC and little is known of him other than who his children were. The reasoning was good, so I agreed, like HEM, that there were 2 Clement Mattinglys. What threw me was that Ann Mattingly was settling Clements estate in AAC in 1780 yet Clement did not name a wife in his will of 1778. HEM cited a reference, that I had pulled from the Hall of Records, that shows that Ann Mattingly settling the estate of Clement Mattingly in AAC. What HEM did not realize and I didn't either, although it was staring me in the face, is that Ann Mattingly was not Ann Burton Mattingly, but his daughter Ann who was named as his executor along with Thomas McWilliams (his son-in-law) and Ruth his daughter. The court record in AAC shows his executors (Thomas McWilliams, Ann Mattingly and Joseph Stone & wife - Ruth's husband) settling accounts there. So, I suppose that we/I can forget the notion that there were 2 Clement Mattinglys in MD in the mid to late 1700's. But a positive negative is still a positive.

"Oath of Fidelity, Prince George's County Maryland, Fielder Bowie's Return Clement Mattingley" From: MARYLAND RECORDS VOL II, Brumbaugh, 1928,1993, Genealogical Publ. Co., Baltimore,p. 304 I didn't notice that I had left the date off until I read your reply. It's March 23,1779 JB
Ooh! Now this is fun. The Clement that is in SMC is pretty obviously the original Clement Mattingly. The Clement Mattingly in PGC and the one in Washington Co, KY, I think are the same person. There is a Clement Mattingly in PGC in the 1776 Tax Records (this record was considered a early census of MD because it accounted for all people living in MD at that time). Clement is listed as 28 y.o. which would place him being born c. 1738. This Clement is also listed with another male in the household age 11, Frances Mattingly (female) aged 44 y.o. and various other females whose ages I cannot remember (18, 17, 11, 3, maybe? - I'll double check). I have spectulated that this Frances might be Frances Ford Mattingly. widow of Robert of James of Thomas II. Robert died in 1776 and may not have been on the census. But I'm not sure who Clement is. He is unlikely to be the son of Robert since he was born in 1737 and he is unlikely to be Frances' son since she would only have been 16 y.o. when he was born (not impossible but unlikely). The children may have been the various children of Robert's (by the way Robert was in PGC in 1772 as giving testimony in court) - Charles was born c. 1764, Katherine c. 1766, Gabriel c. 1770 and Anastasia c. 1772. These are children that we know of and there may have been more. This puts us back to who this Clement was. Interestingly the only child of James of Thomas II still alive in 1776 would have been James b.c. 1728. Thomas died in 1762, Peter in 1774, John in 1773. Perhaps he is a son of Thomas or Peter. Perhaps they are all under one roof since the breadwinners were all dead? Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA
To: W.R. Mattingly I am new to the Mattingly-L list, but have been searching my genealogy for several years. I live in Breckinridge Co. KY and my grandmother was a Mattingly. I have searched and researched my Mattinglys. It has been either "feast or famine". I note that we have similar lineage. Thomas II b c..1650 married Elizabeth Ignatius, Sr 1704 married a Sarah Leonard, Sr 1739 married Mary "Polly" Hayden Leonard, Jr 1766 (you have 1774) married Dorothy Thompson Here, I have two of Leonard Jr's children ( first cousins married). (1) Leonard III 1828 (people called him Lennie" married Sarah A. Cusick W.T. Mattingly married Dortha Mattingly Elizabeth R. Mattingly (my grandmother) (2) Cornelius 1831 Marion Co. KY, married Julia Queen lived & died in Martin Co. IN Dortha Mattingly 7 Apr 1863 married W.T. Mattingly Elizabeth R. Mattingly (my grandmother) I was a rural family doctor for 40 years, and my genealogy searches were when I had the time....not very often. I'm retired now. Mary Ruth Bye, also of Breckinridge Co, KY , provided data that I copied. Her work is very reliable. I discovered that the parents of my grandmother were 1st cousins (while she was still alive). She often fixed my lunch, and my office was close to her home. One day I "got up the nerve" to ask her about it. With her back to me, she said "honey, they were....we just didn't talk about it". She then told me many stories about her family, parents and grand parents. Cornelius apparently moved to Indiana and married there. He seldom visited his KY family. He had three children. Leonard J. 1858, John C. 1860, and Dortha 1863. Cornelius died young 17 Jul 1864. Julia remarried Mathew Riney. When she was 19 or 20 she moved to KY at the home of her uncle Leonard III 1828, and married W.T. Mattingly (LeonardIII's son) in 1884. Leonard J. 1858 married Mary A. Corbie ( possibly Corbett, family called her "Tavey") on 23 Oct 1876 at Long Lick Church in Breck. Co. They had a daughter Ella b c..1878 I find no Leonard G. in my data, although I have Leonards, Lennie, and Lenard. These people obviously loved the name, and spelled it differently.........to confuse people like me. Lenard Mattingly 1867 was a son of Leonard III 1828, and married Ethel Conner. I'll be happy to share my data with anyone. write to [email protected] Jim Sills James G. Sills, M.D. HC 60 Box 3B Harned, KY 40144 [email protected] 270-756-2297 Destin address James G Sills 9950 W.
