    3. Well wrong again , I just rechecked and I have John Oswald date wrong It looks like to me at this point it may be John Reece but the 1860 Marion Co census proves different. 1850 Daviess Co. 3. This one is a long shot, but Ignatius George also had a son named John, born about 1832. This one went to Illinois with his mother and married Catherine McMannis in Clay County, Illinois on 2-19-1856. Could he have returned to Kentucky and married a 2nd time? I only have the 1850 census records for Illinois and haven't checked later records so can't verify if he remained in Illinois after 1867 or not. He and Catherine had at least two children according to reports: Jeremiah 1857 and Mary A. in 1867 (both born in Illinois). Could John's date of birth be off on the 1850 census? For example some that I haven't traced: Martin Mattingly, Sr. and Helen Thompson had a son named John, born 1834; Joseph and Elizabeth (son of Ignatius Mattingly and Mary Daft) had a son named John, born about 1836; there was John B. born about 1836 to James and Mary A. (James was son of John Mattingly and Mary Wimsatt); there was also John Rowan, born 1833 (son of John L. in line of Jeremiah), who reportedly died in 1849 but was on the 1850 census(may have died later); in the line of John Townley, Frederick had a son named John born about 1835; in Cezar's line, Leonard Mattingly and Nancy Spencer had a son named John, born 1831; John H., born about 1836 (son of James and grandson of Barnett); John Henry, 1835, son of James Mattingly and Cecelia Cussick; John Henry 1836, son of James Mattingly and Jane Riggs; John Lewis born 1836, son of Lewis H. Mattingly and Lucinda Shircliff. That's it for the unknown John's in my files (that I found anyway). I can't help but mention John Reece! Has anyone ever identified his parents? *********************** Pretty sure the George you found in the 1850 and 1880 Daviess Co, KY census records is George Austin Mattingly who I show as the son of Basil Mattingly and Monica Miles.. Since his son John b. 1832 is still with him in 1880 and your John Mattingly has a separate listing in the 1880 census, I don't think he is the son of George Austin. Don't believe in this case there is a duplicate listing for John b. 1832. Additionally, George Austin Mattingly's son John b. 1832 is also listed with him in the 1860 and 1870 Daviess Co, KY census records and seems to have never married. So consistentley from 1850 thru 1880, George Austin Mattingly is listed with a son John. Think we can eliminate him as your John Mattingly for sure. A big find would be to come across a John Mattingly abt age 18 in the 1850 census that we cannot identify or in the 1860 Census age 28 that we cannot identify. I know we found your John Mattingly in the 1870 and 1880 Daviess Co, KY census records of Daviess Co ages 38 and 48 respectively with your Ggrandfather Charles ages 2 and 12, but cannot recall if we ever identified him in the 1850 or 1860 census records. Don't think so. John Oswald Mattingly is of Daviess Co, KY but he was b. in 1851 and died in 1920 and is buried in St Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery in St Joseph, Daviess Co, KY. His father was George Washington Mattingly, a different family. George Washington Mattingly is also buried in St Alphonsus.

    1. [MATTINGLY] Henry Elsey Mattingly
    2. I recently did some research trying to find the parents of Lucinda Mattingly who married Richard Riley Mattingly and have concluded that Henry Elsey Mattingly's son James M Mattingly married at least twice, first to Sarah E Whitfill, dau of Martin B/G Whitfill and Rebecca Shaw and secondly to Nancy Elizabeth Clark, dau of Matthew C Clark and Mary Mariah Bray. Lucinda was the daughter of James M Mattingly and Nancy Elizabeth Clark. At the same time, Dolores and Danny Bohn who have a Mattingly line on their web page obtained the death certificate of Lucinda and it does state that Jame Mattingly and Nacny Clark were her parents. There are other children of these families, I am only showing hte ones listed at the time the census records were taken. Bob Alvey 1850 Grayson Co, KY census Henry Mattingly age 59 KY  (Henry Elsey Mattingly, wife Eddsey Templeman died 1841) John Mattingly age 26 KY (John T married Mary Jane Conder) Lucinda Mattingly age 23 KY   (died 1852, not married Walnut Hill Cemetery) Mary Mattingly age 18 KY  (Mary Elizabeth married William Barnes Carter) Kitty Mattingly age 16 KY  (Catherine, died 1858 not married Walnut Hill Cemetery) James Mattingly age 15 KY  (James M, married Sarah Whitfill then Nancy Elizabeth Clark) Basha Mattingly age 12 KY  (Barbara Mattingly, married Jonathan Kiper) Francis M Mattingly age 10 KY  (Francis Marion, married Marcella C Clark)     1860 Grayson Co, KY census James Mattingly age 26 KY  (James M, son of Henry Elsey Mattingly) Sarah E Mattingly age 23 KY (Sarah E Whitfill, died before 1864) Ezra Mattingly age 2 KY (s/b Edsey A Mattingly) William H  Burris age 14 KY (no idea who this is) Henry Mattingly age 73 KY  (Henry Edsey Mattingly, his father) Francis Mattingly age 21 KY (Francis Marion Mattingly, his brother) 1870 Grayson Co, KY census J M Mattingly 37 KY   (James M, son of Henry Elsey Mattingly) N E Mattingly age 33 KY (Nancy Elizabeth Clark, dau of Matthew C Clark) A A Mattingly age 14 KY  (is this child by first marriage of Nancy? KY.  I have not found her in the 1860 census but bet she married someone before James M Mattingly.

    2. Attention Mattingly researchers. If you've not visited this site you will want to. It has quite a bit of mention of your lines & history of interest in ME & KY. Norma willing share this with us all. Carol in WA In a message dated 7/24/01 5:59:47 PM Pacific Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: << Subj: [MatneyForum] Peakes of MD Date: 7/24/01 5:59:47 PM Pacific Daylight Time From: [email protected] (Norma Lewis) Reply-to: [email protected] To: [email protected] I've just been referred to this Peake site by another Peake family member and it is very interesting, taken partly from a book by a Catholic Sister who has left out our early Mattingly history because she evidently ignored the variant spellings of Pake and Peek. This site is very interesting. You all should look at it for the early history of St. Mary's County MD. Also, there is so much more recently found info from that early era, although St. Mary's Courthouse was burned in 1831 and all the early records lost ~ this new data PROVES the inadequacy of the many books written about the Mattinglys. There is much more data to be found in MD records than what they turned up. I'm writing these guys to tell them they left out Walter's second wife. Also, Carolyn and all, I think our Walters are named for Walter Pake/Peake and his sons who evidently lived in close proximity in St. Charles County MD. The first Walter was hung for murder, it is explained on this site, but he had a son named Walter by his first wife, Frances. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~slhessick/index.htm Norma >>

    1. [MATTINGLY] Deed of Conveyance Henry & Sophia Mattingly
    2. William R Mattingly
    3. Following a lot of work on the part of Judith Burger and Tom Hubscher and a wee bit by myself, I have had the pleasure of posting onto the Mattingly Rootsweb board a Deed of Conveyance of Tulip Hill, dated March 17, 1846 between Henry Mattingly (of Zachariah) and Elizabeth Sophia, his wife, and Jeremiah Herbert. What interests me about this particular deed is that it clearly identifies the Henry Mattingly found in Charles County, Maryland during the 1850 census as the son of Zachariah (that is, Zachariah Mattingly, Jr., born 1790). For me, this constitutes a change in my files. I had previously carried the Henry Mattingly, found in St. Mary's County during the 1850 census as the son of Zachariah, Jr. The Henry of Charles County was first married to Elizabeth Sophia Dent with whom he had three children: Zora Sophia, Benjamin Henry, and Ann Celestia. Henry's first wife died before 1850 and during the census he was married to Eliza E. Goodrick. Thomas Hubscher is a direct descendant of Henry Mattingly and Elizabeth Sophia Dent. I must admit that I doubted Tom when he first revealed this information to me but after his father, Dennis Hubscher, found the original documents and Tom sent copies to me I quickly realized the error and contacted one person who I felt was exceptionally good at transcribing such records. That was Judith Burger of course. There are additional documents pertaining to this Henry Mattingly being transcribed at this time and will be posted when completed. As for the Henry of St. Mary's County? He reportely was a son of John. Which John that may have been is currently a mystery. The only one I've familiar with at this time was in Allegany County and I don't believe it was him. Something in the back of my mind says "Could this have been John Townly?" I don't know!

    3. Bob and all, Thanks for all the input. I think I am beginning to see the light here with some of the mud washed away from my eyes. Judith, forgive me, I got a little side tracked here. I'm getting back on those documents right now. Bob it seems to me that some of the children in Priscilla's household during 1850 must be grandchildren. I don't find Barnett on census records after 1820 so presume he died between 1827 and 1830, or there a-bouts.

    3. Ah, that makes it easier and don't fret about typos. I'm the king of error! I don't think we can always put too much emphasis on a couple of years difference either. Still wish I could find a James Mattingly in Illinois. That is, Clay County, Illinois. I find several James in other counties. For example - James Mattingley married Elizabeth Davis in Menard Co. 12-1-1867; James Mattingly & Nettie Higginbottham in Menard Co. 12-24-1865; James to Nancy Freeman in Moultrie Co. 7-7-1845; James A. (W) to Agnes Dunn in Edgar Co. 1-8-1889; and James M. to Ann M. Hart in Knox Co. 5-1-1862. Do you suppose one or more of these might be the son of Ignatius George? *********** PLEASE forgive the typo. The census year was 1870 NOT 1860. So this could still be James son of Barnett. A two year discrepancy is nothing when you're dealing with census records.

    1. [MATTINGLY] Washington Co. KY expert?
    2. Linda & William, I believe that Linda meant the 1870 Washington Co, KY census. In that census James Mattingly age 45 is listed with his wife Elizabeth (she is listed as only 22? too young to be the Elizabeth Kenndey he married in 1855), Samuel age 14, Naomi age 13, Mary age 9, Elizabeth age 4 and George age 1. This James Mattingly seems to be the same as the one listed in the 1850 census with his mother Priscilla (she is listed as age 74, can she really be the mother to these children?) and also the same James who first married Servilla Keeling, daughter of Willaim Keeling and Ann "Nancy" Hardin. Delilah and Elizabeth "Lizzie" below were also daughters of William and Ann Keeling. Three doors away is John Mattingly (John Thomas) age 41, his wife Lizzie age 29 (this age seems wrong also if she is the Elizabeth Keeling he married also in 1855), William age 17, John age 15, Mary age 14, George age 12, Susan age 9, Thomas age 7, Martha age 1 and Miltie age 5. This looks like John Thomas Mattingly brother to James and son of Bernard Mattingly and Priscilla Cash. He first married Delilah M Keeling and William and John would be her children. I cannot prove without question that James in the 1870 Washington co, KY census is the son of Barnard Mattingly and Priscilla Cash but it certainly looks that way. even from earlier census records and the Washington Co, KY marriage records. There is a listing in the 1850 Washington Co, KY census for Priscilla Mattingly age 74 b. KY?? with the following members of her household; Lucretica age 38, John age 28, Caleb age 25, James age 23, Susan M age 8 and Sarah J age 3. I have thought this to be Priscilla Cash widow of Bernard Mattingly (parents unknown) 4/25/1808 in Washington Co, KY per marriage records. If this is so, then this James might be the same one who was 45 in the 1870 census. I cannot find any of them in the 1860 Washington Co, KY census. The only one of this bunch I can find in the 1860 Washington Co, KY census is W C Mattingly (William Caleb) age 36, son of Bernard Mattingly and Priscilla Cash and brother to James and John above. He married Mary Jane Hardesty in 1852. A lot more work need here so any additions or corrections welcome. I know almost nothing of the Lewis connection to this family. 3. I'm a bit confused with the age of James. The son of Barnett was 23 on the 1850 census, and 45 on the 1860 census? The son of Ignatius George was 17 on the 1850 census and I haven't seen the 1860 census. The easy solution would be if someone had access to the 1860 Illinois census and could James have been in Illinois during that year? Finally, the James on the 1880 census was still only 45. We know he had to have aged and the son of Barnett should have been about 53 to 55 in 1880, while the son of I. G. would have been about 47. ******************** Who knows the most about the Mattinglys in Washington County, Kentucky? I am looking at the following entry in the 1860 census for that county: On p. 440A; household #220 of the 1870 census it shows: LEWIS, Susan 45 (widow of Edward G. Lewis) Jernada 19 Joan 16 Pat 13 James 9 (this is my James Albert Lewis) William 5 On p. 440B; household #224 it shows: MATTINGLY, James 45 Elizabeth ?2 (couldn't read the first number, but another source says 42) Samuel 14 Naomi 13 Mary 9 (I believe this is my Mary, who married James A. Lewis) Elizabeth 4 George 1 I've been told that this is James Mattingly and his second wife Elizabeth Kennedy (m. 18 October 1855). James' first wife was supposed to be Sevilla Keeling and his third wife was Mrs. Martha Keeling. I had also been told that this James is the son of Barnett Mattingly and Priscilla Cash. Can anyone prove or disprove this?

    3. PLEASE forgive the typo. The census year was 1870 NOT 1860. So this could still be James son of Barnett. A two year discrepancy is nothing when you're dealing with census records.
