    3. Where is my head at? There was a George in Nelson County during the 1850 census who I haven't seen identified yet. Nearly all the family was listed strictly by initials and this must be the guy that died in Daviess County in 1859: George 57 C. 47 (must have been Catherine Miles) W. 26 Male M. 25 " (could this be James M.?) I. 20 Female L. 15 Male F. 13 " M. 11 " (someone said this was a Milton) S. 9 Female M. 8 Male Martin 6 " E. 3 Female G. 2 Male

    3. Don't remember exactly where I found this data (my wonderful logging system) but I found where the Administrator of George's estate was John G. Gates. Beneficiaries were listed as: Jno. R. Lancaster, I. M. Queen. Jno. Moreman, James M. Mattingly, F. K. & J. M. Mattingly. and it was dated 9-6-1859 (must have been the probate date as the death records gives George's death as 7-31-1859 in Daviess County. This George might appear to have been George Austin (at first glance) at least during the census of 1850 of Daviess County. This George Austin, however, reportedly died in Indiana in 1885. The other George there during 1850 was George Washington. I can't find a James M. with either of these George's so we must be looking at one from outside Daviess County originally, who died there in 1859 and had been married to Catherine Miles. I can't place this George any better than I could place James M.! ********************* >I found this J. M. Mattingly. About two months ago, a cousin on another line I am working on told me about http://www.findagrave.com and how wonderful it was. I decided to check it out myself. There are two sides to Find A Grave - the famous, and everyone else. I went to the non-famous side and I found alot of information that others, like yourself, have submitted. This was great! Basically you type in a name, and a state where you think they were buried. If anything comes up, it lists it. The same thing with a cemetery look-up (except it lists all the cemeteries with that name and the counties they are in). Now what if the cemetery is there, but your family member is not? Well, if you have the info, you can add them! What if neither the cemetery or person is not there? If you have the info, you can add it. Best of all, it costs NOTHING! You can leave virtual flowers, messages, and even photos! To this date, I myself have submitted over 400 names, a few photos, and virutal flowers. I hope that you will consider visiting this site and making it the best site possible. Rhonda ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 1. Re: [MATTINGLY] Will of Edward Mattingly
    2. Judith, I'd buy that theory. One note - Clement's will was written in December of 1778 and in it he wills these tracts of land to his children. So he must have come in possession of them before then. If there was a land transfer then it must have occurred between the time that Edward's will was probated and the time that Clement's was written. Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA

    3. Paul, HEM on p.27, "Mattingly Family In Early America, "states that possibly John Baptist Mattingly 1713-1793 had a son John Baptist. It is my theory that he did, John Baptist Mattingly died 1817, Washington County, KY with will on record. The most likely senerio in my mind is that after Edward's death in 1778, John Baptist 1713-1793, sold the land to his brother Clement since his (JB"s) son John Baptist d. 1817 was in Kentucky and would not have use of it. I've not found a land transfer in the Chancery Records to prove my theory, so it remains a theory. Edward died in 1778 and Clement's will was probated June 20,1780, so there was plenty of time for the property to be transferred. With my theory in mind, the John Baptist listed on probate records, COULD have been John Baptist d. 1817 KY,(they traveled back and forth) instead of his alledged father John Baptist d. abt 1793. What do you think? Judith Burger *********************************** "The other interesting thing about Edward's will is that he leaves JB the tracts of land "Mattingly's Lane" and "Great St. Thomas" in his will of February 1778 but yet Edward's brother, Clement, leaves these tracts of land to his children in his will of December 1778. So, clearly JB comes to claim the property but apparently does not keep the property and must have in turn given or sold the property to his brother, Clement. Again, making me think that this JB did not live in or near SMC. It is unlikely that JB would have died because his son would have inherited the tracts as per Edward's will. Unless, of course, JB died, his son inherited the property and then in turn sold it to his Uncle Clement. Seems too much to go on in 10 months. Any thoughts? Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA"

    1. [MATTINGLY] Will of Edward Mattingly
    2. I have a few comments and a few questions. I have seen mention somewhere that Edward Mattingly (son of Thomas III) mentions a Thomas Mattingly in his will and there seems to be some speculation regarding who this Thomas may be. Edward had 2 nephews named Thomas. One was the son of his brother Clement and the other was Thomas V, son of his brother Thomas IV. Clements son, Thomas, died before 1778 and therefore is not likely to be the Thomas named in Edward's will. However, Thomas V, died in 1779 and is likely to be the Thomas that is named in Edward's will. In fact, in Thomas V's will he mentions "...all the estate given me from my grandfather Mattingly, and my uncle Edward Mattingly's estate..." The other interesting thing about Edward's will is that he mentions "I give to my brother Jn Bapt. Mattingly my water mill..........during his natural life and after his decease, the said mill and land to go to his son and his heirs forever." The tracts of land that he mentions are "Mattingly's Lane" and "Great St. Thomas". Now there are 2 interesting facts here. The first is that he mentions John Baptist's son (so clearly this John Baptist did have children - HEM lists this JB as having "no issues") but he doesn't actually name him. This is strange because he clearly names nearly ever niece and nephew that he had and identified them as being ".... children of my brother Clement", etc... Why would he have not named JB's son? I seem to think that perhaps there was some estrangement or that this JB did not live in or near SMC and perhaps Edward did not actually know his name. This JB does present the will to the courts after Edward's death so he is clearly alive. I'm wondering if this isn't the JB that was in VA. Thoughts? The other interesting thing about Edward's will is that he leaves JB the tracts of land "Mattingly's Lane" and "Great St. Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA

Leonard III was my Mattingly grandmother's grandfather (my G-G-Grandfather). I spent many evenings talking to her about her family, and taking notes. She thought that her grandmother's maiden name was Cusick (she was unsure of spelling). But after we talked more, she admitted to being uncertain , and said "either he did or one of those older Mattingly boys did." I asked my grandmother's sister, Bessie Mattingly, what she knew. She was uncertain at first, but when I mentioned my g-mother thought it might be a Cusick, she said "yes, I believe she was". 3. I haven't seen all the John's .Most that I've seen ,because the age was way off , I disregarded .BUT I believe a year could just be the time of the birth month or they were almost a certain age so they gave that age to the census taker. That would make Leonard Mattingly and Nancy Spencer who had a with son, John, born 1831, a good candidate to check into. I have personal knowledge of a birthdate that shows up one year older on the census in one of my other lines. I'll see what I can find out about Leonard and son. Thanks both of you.
