William > I'm thinking that George was not originally from Nelson County. Isn't this > him in Washington County during both 1820 and 1830? > That's right William, the first two census listing (1820 & 1830) I posted in my last e-mail were from Washington Co. I see you did not cut and add them to this e-mail or did you just not get them? In 1840, the first Nelson Co year he is listed with a younger wife thatn the 1820 adn 1830 Washington Co, KY census. That's part of my reason for thinking that his first wife could be Elizabeth Buckman who he married in Washington Co, then he married Catherine Miles in Nelson Co, KY later > 1820 George between the ages of 18 and 26 (should have been about 23 if born > in 1797 as suggested by the 1850 census). > 1830 George between the ages of 30 and 40. Should have been about 33. > Do believe you have the math right but the range in the 1820 census was 16/26 (1794-1804) and would be a year off if b. 1793. But for a 1820 census record, one year is close enough for me. There was an added category in 1820 of 16/18 which often had children listed twice if they were in this category for the next category was not 18/26 but reverted to 16/26. The category's for males only was 0/10, 10/16, 16/18, 16/26, 26/45 etc. In 1830 George was listed in the 30/40 category and would have been 33 as you say. > George apparently relocated to Nelson County sometime between 1830 and 1840 > as he is in Nelson by the 1840 census. > > I agree and I bet the KY tax lists for Washington and Nelson Co's could pin > point that even closer. I'm thinking that George was not originally from Nelson County. Isn't this him in Washington County during both 1820 and 1830? 1820 George between the ages of 18 and 26 (should have been about 23 if born in 1797 as suggested by the 1850 census). 1830 George between the ages of 30 and 40. Bob, Sept 28,2000 you and William looked at this family.Got my attention because i thought James might be my GGF but wasn't.Have your reply of 28th printed out. Births on microfilm shows several as W R Gates and Elizabeth she of Daviess Co.James and Lucretia were having children the same years in Daviess. So it would look like she sister to James and the father was dead as he went her bond.If George was the dad wasnt he still living but maybe not able to travel? Joe, when and where was this guy studied last September, on the Mattingly list?? This sure seems to fit and would fill on of the missing slots in the 1840 Nelson Co, KY listing for George Mattingly. Because Elizabeth Ann is married in Nelson Co in 1849, she is not on the 1850 Nelson Co, KY census with her father but in the 1850 Nelson Co, KY census with her husband William R Gates age 28, Elizabeth age 17. George's family is in the 1860 Daviess Co, KY census but the Gates family is still in Nelson Co. in 1860, William R Gates age 38, Elizabeth A age 28, Thomas M age 9, George E age 7, Eliza age 6, John age 5, Truman age 3, Susan E age 2, William age 6/12. William, I can follow all you are saying below but I don't have the marriage of an Austin Mattingly to Ann Elizabeth Bartlett. But I do show Augustine D Mattingly as the son of George Austin "Big George" Mattingly. I don't show a son Austin. Gerald Thompson in his "KY Catholic Pioneers" states that Augustine b. abt 1828 was the son of George Austin Mattingly and Ann "Nancy" Johnson per Holy Naame of Mary Catholic Church baptismal records where Augustine is listed as baptized on 10/28/1828. Godparents were Henry and Catherine (Flanagan) Johnson. Also George Austin and Nancy Mattingly are listed among those buried in the St Lawrence Catholic Cemetery in Daviess Co, KY. George is listed as George E which looks like an error and was b. 10/30/1802 d. 10/31/1883. Nancy is listed as b. 12/15/1807 d. 10/23/1869, wife of George. A couple of years ago I was at the Filson Club in Louisville and in the backroom files are a series of folders with information by Father Lyons. One of these folders is titled the Calvary Genealogy. It has family data by surname. I copied a few pages, on Mattingly, Carrico, Bickett and a few others. Would like to copy the entire file someday. But there is a page titled "George Mattingly, son of Basil Mattingly of Leonard . States that George married Anna Johnson or Johnston on 1/22/1828, HNMCC, Calvary, KY. Says that Geoge and Nancy raised 8 children and moved to Daviess Co, KY. George died in 1885 (there are a few differences such as George's deathdate of 1885 vs 1883 per St Lawrence records and the fact that in 1850 the parish census of St Mary of the Woods, Whitesville lists Geroge with 12 in the household including 10 children. Think a couple were not found in the baptismal registers. But these were listed. Augustine and Amanda were bap on Calvary, KY, the rest st St Lawrence in DAviess Co, KY. Augustine D bap 12/28/1828; Amanda Catherine b. 4/10/1830, bap 5/30/1820; Harriet b. 7/1/1834 bap 8/10/1834; Eleanor b. 8/12/1836 bap 9/25/1836; George Milton b. 1/11/1835 bap 4/23/1835; Eliza Jane b. 2/9/1840 bap 5/17/1840; Mary Ann b. 5/3/1941 bap 8/15/1841; Patrick Johnson b. (not listed) bap 2/15/1847; Rosette b. 1/20/1849 bap 5/13/1849. Per census records I find a John b. abt 1832 and a Nancy b. abt 1844. Ralph and all, I have this George as having married Ann Nancy Johnson. I currently carry him as George Austin and being in Daviess Co., Ky. during the 1850 census but dying in Daviess County, Indiana. This is the one whose nickname was reported as being "Big George". I know some researchers carry two men, one George and one Austin but I think they're the same man. I have some difficulties with the off-spring of George. I believe he only had the one son named Augustine but he must have went by Austin also (appears that way on some records). I currently carry both men as sons of George but only so I can try to delete one of the wives. For instance, I show Augustine as marrying a Catherine Johnson and Austin as marrying Ann Elizabeth Bartlett. The same man likely married both women but I haven't been able to verify that yet. ****************** I have a George Mattingly, b. 1803, Washington County, Kentucky; d. 1885, Daviess County, Kentucky; son of Basil (1772-1835), son of Leonard (1739-1829). Is this any kind of a clue?

William--- I have a George Mattingly b. 1803, Washington To
I also have considered that George may have married both Elizabeth Buckman and Catherine Miles. The parentage of George escapes me but several of the children of Leonard Mattingly and Mary Hayden married into this family of Buckman's. ie: Mary Polly Mattingly to John Buckman; William married Henrietta Buckman. Julia Ann Buckman married Charles Russell (a grandson of Leonard and Mary). George would fit well into this line of Mattingly's but there is no record of Leonard having a son named George. ************************* >I have two George Mattingly's in my data file that I am beginning to think >might be one and the same. I have two George Mattingly's in my data file that I am beginning to think might be one and the same. In Washington Co, KY on June 5, 1815, George Mattingly married Elizabeth Buckman, dau of Charles Buckman and Jane Dunbar. In Sister Donnelly's Buckman book she states that according to census records, they had 6 children, 4 sons and 2 daughters, only a son named Richard b. 1830 and baptized at St Charles Catholic Church in St Mary's. KY is named, the rest are unknown. This agrees with the 1820 and 1830 Washington Co, KY census which I am sure is her main source. But in 1840, there is no George in Washington but a very similar George is in Nelson Co, KY and has a younger wife, probably Catherine Miles. They are in the 1840 and 1850 Nelson Co, KY census and then the family is found in Daviess co, KY in 1860 minus George who has died on July 31, 1859 per William R Mattingly's recent e-mail information. Some of these children got dropped off along the way either in Washington, Nelson or Daviess Co but that is for another time. Not sure what happened to all these children but we have plenty of unresolved Mattingly's to accomodate these few. I'm still not sure who was the father of George Mattingly. Below are two sets of data, the first is the census listings from 1820 to 1860. The second is my Geroge Mattingly chart assuming that he marrried first Elizabeth Buckman per Washington Co, KY marriage records and secondly Catherine Miles per Nelson Co, KY marriage records. Joe, I have no idea what the name of the wife James Vessells, Sr is, I just show it as Unknown. I do know that on the Washington Co, KY marriage records a James Vessels marries an Eleanor Mattingly on Nov 3, 1808. In the 1860 Meade Co, KY census, James Vessells is listed age 76 b. KY with Ellen age 74 b. KY. Gerald Thompson in his book "KY Catholic Pioneers, Volume 1, The Rolling Fork Settlement" has this listing for James Vessels, Jr. James Vessells, Jr b. 1780 to James Vessells, Sr. In the 1810 Washington Co, KY census, James Jr is listed as between 26-45 years of age & his wife between 16-26 years of age with a son under ten years of of age. See 1850 Washington Co census and the 1860 Meade Co census. Her married Eleanor Mattingly b. abt 1786, dau of Joseph & Hessina Hinton Mattingly bond dated 11/9/1808 married on 11/9/1808 by Charles Nerinckx, father of John ca 1803/1808, Edward abt 1811, Walter abt 1815, Lucinda abt 1828 and Washington abt 1830. I wonder if John was really born before 1808 if James Vessells, Jr was married prior to Eleanor Mattingly?
