Some time ago I asked if anyone had seen the will of John Suttle. I received a few abstracts of the will and because there were a few discrepancies, I decided to have a copy made. It yielded little new information other than it does mention that Jane Suttle was the eldest daughter of John Suttle. This would lead me to believe (no real proof, of course) that it was, in fact, John Suttle's widow, Mary, that Thomas II married rather than John Suttle's daughter, Mary. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ In the Name of God Amen - I John Subtile of St Mary's County in the province afsd being very sick and weak yet in perfect memory and not knowing how the Allmighty may Deal with me have Ordained this as my Last Will and Testament. In wittness thereof I have here unto Sett my hand and fixed my seal this 14th Day of April 1680. Signed Sealed and DD Jo. his mark Subtile signed and sealed In presence of us- Wm. Wm. Digges May the 29th 1680 Then Came before me Thomas Burford and made oath to the within mentioned will according to usual form. Wm. Digges. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ The Will of John Subtile was trancribed from a photocopy courtesy of Norman Koenig from an original kept at the Hall of Records, Anapolis, MD, by Paul M. Mattingly. The writting was good and very readable. No changes or alternations were made of any kind.
In my on-going saga of Clement Mattingly of Ann Arundel County vs. Clement of SMC, I had a copy of the will of Elizabeth Mattingly made. That is, Elizabeth Mattingly, wife of Thomas Mattingly, son of Clement of Thomas III. Elizabeth died in 1773 and HEM referenced this will as: Liber 39, folio 342 and Liber TA #1, folio 650. The will reads pretty much as HEM indicated but there is a line in the will which reads, "Im I give and bequeath my mothering law Ann Mattingly my red cloke to her and her heirs forever." Now there is no proof that this is Ann Burton Coyle of Ann Arundel County that married Clement Mattingly but I think that the evidence is leaning more toward there being one Clement Mattingly who merely owned property in Ann Arundel, Baltimore and St. Marys Counties. To my knowledge it was original book and yes the price included postage. Rhonda
Bob, welcome home and am glad you experienced no difficulty with all that's happening in the world at this time. I'm made some changes also and thanks for the update.
I have read with interest, the posts leading up to the old question of which Clarke did Elizabeth Mattingly marry throughout my three week vacation in Italy. I went to Italy cold turkey this time not wanting to have to deal with the hardships of electrical conversion and Internet access. But there are many Internet Cafe's through out Italy where I could log on and access my accounts. While the browser headings are in Italian. it is easy to access. I arrived home two days ago and did some checking with my records, books and contacted the two best souces I know, Linda Reno and Jerry Clark. With all her recent posts I am adding Norma Thompson to that list. I'm not going to get into the details or rehash any of the past discussions on this subject of "Is it John or Robert". More than a dozen researchers have beat this issue to death over the past few years and many including myself have held that there was inconclusive proof for either. To emphasis a point, no one except Charley that I knew felt that there was evidence presented to prove who she married one way or the other. No one has ever said Charley was wrong, just overly optomistic in his conclusions. I opted for Robert Clarke as her husband for many years but always with a footnote that it was not proven without a doubt. In my mind, arguments in the past only presented a position that no conclusive evidence existed with many comments to support those beliefs. For sure Charley's presentations, were many and with many facts, but I must admit that my personal feelings for the individual has probably tainted my reasoning in the past but I never felt that there was enough evidence to sway me from the opinions of those I respect and had done so much work to help others. Now it seems, the answer was right in front of our noses in a simple little abstract which Norma Thompson has presented that I believe is the best information we have to make some form of conclusion based on existing facts. What is so shocking is that the document has been so available for years and missed by all including myself, Jerry, Linda, Sister Donnelly and even Charley. I have had the book "Abstracts of the Inventories and Accounts of the Prerogative Court of Maryland, 1715 thru 1718 on my bookshelf for years and not noticed the entry on Page 56 dated Apr 8, 1717 which contains the data presented by Norma Thompson. Believing that "Legatees" would be "payees" or those who received payments from an estate, and knowing that it was the practise at the time for husbands of heirs to receive payments, I am changing my family file to reflect that Elizabeth Mattingly married John Clarke, not Robert Clarke. If anyone wants to rehash old presentations, there are many on both the St Mary's and Mattingly list archives but I don't recommend doing so, enough has been posted just this past two weeks. Go forward believing that Elizabeth Mattingly, daughter of Thomas Mattingly, II probably married John Clarke sometime before 1699 based upon indentures presented within the past week. If something better comes along, futher consideration can be dealt with then. But it doesn't look like we will find a marriage record. And also as a fan of America's grand old game, I agree that Norma hit a home run. Bob Alvey

Henry L. Mattingly purchased Sarum Manor for $15,000 on September 9, 1853. The manor is no longer in the Mattingly family. Future postings made by my Father and I will include more information on Sarum Manor, including the deed that shows how it came into the Mattingly family. More postings will be made including other deeds, birth/death certificates and photographs. Photographs would include pictures of Sarum and recent pictures of Mattingly Headstones in MD. These postings will be available courtesy of my Father, Dennis Jack Hubscher, Husband of Rosemary Lee Mattingly. My Father has been performing some great research on his family and my Mother's. We recently discovered that my Great Grandfather Adrian T. Mattingly died in West Virginia and not Maryland, as we originally thought. If you have any information on Adrian, my Father and I would greatly appreciate it. Included with our postings will be attached copies of documents. I think this is a great way to share copies of original documents and family pictures. I just bought a copy of the HEM book from Patrick Smeltzer and it was the same address that Judith Berger gave and for the same amount that she paid in OCtober of last year. He was also very prompt in getting it to me. Rhonda Hansch
Ralph, I'm not sure what other people will say about HEM's second book (published by his descendent, Patrick Smeltzer) but from my standpoint, I found a few interesting items in the book but... it was not organized in anyway and was largely just a collection of notes that HEM had made regarding info that he published in his first book. On the other hand, if you are a John Townley Mattingly or Henry Mattingly descendent from Western MD, you may find the book to be quite valuable. I found the book to be of value only in that it gave me more of an idea of HEM's thought processes in publishing the first book and also in piqueing my interest in the other info that Patrick may have in his possession that HEM had collected over many years of research. Dear Thomas and Dennis, I was very curious about some of your information as you noted that Adrian died in West Virginia. My great greandfather, Thomas Joseph Mattingly, was born in West Virginia and could never make any connection to anything! He moved to Washington DC as a young boy. Would you have any information as to where in WVA he may have died? Hello William--- Recently there was someone else who was making another Mattingly book available that was supposed to have been somewhat of an extension of the original HEM book. Have you had a chance to take a look at it and do you recommend it's purchase by us Mattingly descendants who are seriously interested in Mattingly genealogy? Ralph Banks, Austin, TX

Someone has asked me for the address for Patrick Smeltzer (I think that I have this name correct), the descendent of HEM who is offering his book Early Mattinglys in America. Does anyone have it? I spend half my life losing things and the other half looking for them. And I have definitely lost Patrick's address, again. Paul
Thomas Warren's not being the grandfather of Leonard and Edward Mattingly would also explain the curious wording of Edward's will of 1778 in which he states "I give to my Bro. Jno. Bapt M. my Water Mill with the Lands adjoing thereto being a Slipe called Mattinglys lane, & a small parcel which my father purchased from Thomas Warren...." Surely if Thomas Warren was his Grandfather then he would have addressed him as my Grandfather Thomas Warren or Grandfather Warren. Paul Mattingly Atlanta, GA
The copy of the 1820 census that I've seen at our library was a mess and was unable to read the data on Thomas of Washington Co. I suspect this was Thomas Leonard, son of Luke but I'm not certain on that. *********** >The Washington Co.,Ky census index 1820 has a Thomas Mattingly >i have been told.Any info on him?

William--- I certainly understand how such details can easily be overlooked, William. I seem to be doing the same thing more and more often myself. But, it surely would be nice if we could either establish or be able to completely disregard this Elizabeth Starr - Thomas Warren connection. Best regards, Ralph Banks, Austin, TX
