Joseph Alton Mattingly and Agens Celeste Mattingly were 4th cousins with the common ancestor's of Joseph Mattingly and Hessina Hinton. Cynthia J. Thompson was a daughter of William R. Thompson and Mary Florence Medley. I have a couple of Catherine Thompson's but know very little about what happened to either of them. One (probably born about 1910) was a daughter of M. J. Thompson and Catherine Aline Mattingly and a second (born about 1888) was daughter of Richard Clinton Thompson and Julia Walker. I think Bob has a greater amount of info on this line than I do so this exchange is aiding me too. I also agree that Robert is a descendant of Joseph and Hessina.

Betty and William, My Dad doesn't know that much about Uncle Fred's family other than Uncle Fred's sister, Margaret, married my Grandmother Aline's half-brother, Uncle Robert. Uncle Robert lived in Indianapolis, IN for many years. So Robert Mattingly would have been a son of James Edward Mattingly and his first wife (whose name I can't remember and will have to look up and get back with you on). James Edward Mattingly would have been a descendent of Joseph and Hessina Mattingly. My Mom and Dad went to a Mattingly family reunion in Indianapolis several years ago that was for the children of James Edward and his 3 wives. The reunion was held at the farm of one of Robert Mattingly's sons.

By George, I finally found Henry on both the 1830 and 1840 census records of Grayson County, Kentucky. For what-ever reason (blindness I suppose) I have continually overlooked Henry during each exhaustive search. I am prepared to declare Henry as a son of Barnett Mattingly but still would love to see some kind of proof. During 1840, Henry is shown on the same page as Bennett and Annastasia. Bennett was a son of Barnett, Sr. and Annastasia was Barnett's widow (Barnett died during 1830). At this time Henry was shown between the ages of 50 and 60 (meaning he was born between 1780 and 1790, hence supporting the presummed year of birth of 1787). During 1830 (page 315 of the Fed census and page 641 of the images on line of Ancestry.com) Henry is shown between the ages of 30 and 40 (meaning he was born between 1790 and 1800). The argument about his year of birth continues but I am compelled to admit he must have been a son of Barnett and Annastasia.

Robert Mattingly married Margaret "Maggie" Hayden Mary Alma Mattingly married Frederick "Fred" Hayden Margaret and Fred Hayden were children of Sidney Hayden and Catherine Thompson, I believe, and I'm pretty sure they were born in Marion Co Ky. Sidney and Catherine were married by 1890. Hoping someone knows who these Mattingly's belong to and......... hoping you also may know who Sidney Hayden and Catherine Thompson belong to. Getting my wish list in early - thanks! Betty

Loogootee (IN) Tribune, Thursday, November 8, 2001 Gerald Patrick Mattingly, Sr. Dies Thursday, November 1; Funeral Held on Monday Gerald Patrick Mattingly, Sr., age 64, of Loogootee, died at 11:03 p.m. on Thursday, November 1, 2001 at the Deaconess Hospital in Evansville, Indiana. He was born on February 28, 1937, in Daviess County, to John Ernest and Mary B. (Kavanaugh) Mattingly. He married Jacqueline "Jane" Baker on October 30, 1965 and she survives. Mr. Mattingly was retired owner-operator of Mattingly Feed Store, Inc., in Loogootee. He was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Chapel, in Barr Township, where he had served on the parish council, and was the secretary and treasurer of St. Mary's Cemetery. He most recently attended St. Martin's Catholic Church in Whitfield. He was a graduate of Montgomery High School in the Class of 1956 and was recipient of the Brute Society Award in 1994 through the Catholic Church. He was a U. S. Army veteran. Also surviving are one son, Gerald P. "Gerry" Mattingly, Jr., of Loogootee; four daughters, Mary Jo Gries of Solsberry, Angela Kaiser of Leavenworth, Marlena Harvey of Bloomington and Deanna Hopper of Indianapolis; three grandchildren, Brett and Gage Mattingly and Katelyn Kaiser; two brothers, Joseph L. Mattingly of Loogootee, and Timothy E. Mattingly of Montgomery; four sisters, Patricia "Pat" Tow and Rita Elliott, both of Loogootee, Veronica "Bonnie" Tennis of Washington, and Alberta "Bert" Turner of Indianapolis; one uncle, George Kavanaugh of Cannelburg; and one aunt, Veronica Eichmiller of Washington. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Norbert, John and Bernard Mattingly; five sisters Mary Alma Melton, Beatrice Sheetz, Dorothy Jean Ellis and infants, Doris Ann and Catherine Agnes Mattingly. A funeral service was held on Monday, November 5, at St. Mary's Chapel in Barr Township. Burial was made in St. Mary's Cemetery. Graveside rites were conducted by the V.F.W. and American Legion. The Brocksmith Funeral Home, Loogootee, was in charge of the final arrangements. The family suggested that memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Chapel, St. Martin's Catholic Church, or the charity of your choice. (Note: Mr. Mattingly died of an aneurysm.)
I had only heard of one Jasper and that was Jasper Ray. There is a second listed with Rootsweb by Howard Sappington (Wonder if Howard watches this site and may help us out here). This Jasper appears to have been about the correct age to have been Clayton's father although Howard does not list his birthdate or a wife. The father of this Jasper was Albert Benton Mattingly and mother was Nannie Cohoon. At least one son, Ira Lee, was born in 1890 in Missouri. At least they were headed in the right direction. Social Security does list a Jasper R. Mattingly, born 2-7-1892 and dying in 1985 with SSA issued in Montana. This almost could be Jasper Ray but I show him as born 10-22-1891 in Louisville, Ky. and dying in 1955. The only wife I have seen reported for Jasper Ray was Lillian Bishop and no child named Clayton has appeared for them. I'm afraid I'm lost on Albert too, although I have several who are possibilities. ********************* >Obituary, The Seattle Times, Friday, Nov 9, 2001 >Clayton J Mattingley Feb 12, 1932 - Nov 4, 2001 >Clayton J. Paul---- Thank you so much for sharing with us the will of John Suttle. This information is very interesting to me, since his widow, Mary, seems to have been my G6Grandmother. Do we yet have anything on the ancestry of Mary? Ralph Banks
