William et al, Hon. Ben Webb in his THE CENTENARY OF CATHOLICITY IN KENTUCKY,1884. p. 46 in the notes he names Austin and George (not George Austin)as sons of Basil Mattingly and Monica Miles, and then states that Austin was in Mississippi at that time. This is the first I've seen the name of Ralph's assailant (given he was the innocent party that is). Thanks for posting that. I have Basil married twice; first to Monica Miles (I've seen her named as a Monarch also by a couple of researchers but I have her parents as Phillip Miles and Eleanor Bryan) with 4 children: Austin, Harriett, George Austin, and Martha Ellen. I'm not sure about this first child named Austin. I've left the name in my files hoping to find something to settle the issue, merely because researchers have a wife assigned to him (Mary Bob). Reportedly this Austin went to Mississippi but that nakes me wonder if this Austin might not have been more closely related to Gabriel (son of John B. died 1817) who had several children that settled in Mississippi. Anyway, Monica must have died before 1816 when Basil married Mary B. Hagan. Looking at the 1810 census of Washington County we do find Basil with 2 males under 10 and 2 females under 10 so we know he had the two sons, but did both have the name Austin? I currently presume he did. 1820 finds Basil still in Washington County and this time with males as follows: 2 under 10; 1 age 10 to 16; 1 age 16 to 18; 1 age 18 to 26; and himself over 45. Females: 4 under age 10; 2 age 10 to 16; and wife, Mary B. age 26 to 45. 1830 also in Washington County. This time males are: 2 between 5 and 10; 1 aged 10 to 15; and himself 50 to 60. Females: 1 under age 5; 2 age 5 to 10; 2 age 10 to 15; and Mary B. age 40 to 50. 1840 and this part of Washington is now in Marion County and Basil is dead. Mary B. is on census with males: 1 age 10 to 15; 1 age 15 to 20; 1 age 20 to 30. Females: 1 age 10 to 15; 2 age 15 to 20 and herself aged 40 to 50. This census is also part of my reasoning that Raphael was not a son of Basil's and Mary's. Mary was taking care of her children but she had no child under age 10 at this time. Washington however, did. He is also on the 1840 census with one male under age 10 and one female under age 10. His wife, at the time was aged 20 to 30. The children I have for Basil and Mary B. are: Mahala; Edward Hagan; Henrietta Burrilla; Mary Jane; William B.; Nancy Ann; Isabelle H.; and Henry Clay. All total, I carry 5 sons and 7 daughters and the best I can tell from looking at the census records, this seems accurate. Whether the names, ages, and people they married are correct, well....maybe! **************** What i have is from the Millenial Trumpeter (Maryville,Tn) paper. Ralph Mattingly and Alexander Greene of Georgia were in a fight and Mattingly died Mar.7,1835. ****************

I have had conflicting thought about Raphael as a son of Basil and Mary B. According to the 1850 census Raphael was 14 years old giving a birthdate of about 1836. Basil died in 1833. I believe one of Basil's daughters, Mahala, married Washington Mattingly and tend to think Raphael was Mahala's child and a grandchild of Basil's. Still haven't found any concrete proof however. Mahala died (according to most researchers during 1835 but I don't think this is accurate as she had a daughter, Melvina in 1839 (married Thomas Russell in 1858)) and during 1850, Raphael Mattingly was living with Joseph B. and Mary Jane Spalding. Mary Jane was a sister of Mahala's. I'm still looking for Melvina on the 1850 census but have had no luck in finding her. I've seen some reports that state Mahala actually married a Dennis Mudd but I'm not sure I can come to terms with this. On 6-8-1858, a Mrs. Ann Mudd, daughter of Basil died. I suspect, but can't really prove, that this was Nancy Ann who was married to Andrew Jackson Mudd, per most sources. The 1850 census merely shows him as A. J. with a wife named Ann. Their marriage records name him as Dennis Mudd. Obviously there's a bit of confusion with some of the marriages of Basil's off-spring. I just love this stuff!
I think I recall a discussion where Winifred's last name was determined to be Higdon but I was never able to find anything that would document it. Seem's like we had some Higdon researchers here for a while. >Do you have Raphael's wife as Winifred HIGDON? Raphael b. 1767 as son of >Joseph and Ann____ Mattingly??? Were there other children? Thanks!
There is a Ralph Mattingly son of Basil d. 1833 and Mary B. Hagan d. 1856 both Washington/Marion County, but I don't have a dob for him. Basil and Mary B. had children 1818-1824, those I have birthdates for that is. And yes, Shirley, I would love to have those court records if you have them handy. Thanks. JB > On second thought, perhaps the B as his middle initial stands for Basil?? > Could he be a son of Basil?
I have a source for the Raphael /Winifred marriage but have not tied them into the family. Do you think this is the Raphael son of Joseph and Anne? JB 1. Raphael1 Mattingley1 was born in See Notes. On second thought, perhaps the B as his middle initial stands for Basil?? Could he be a son of Basil?
William and Judith-- I have it the same way you have it for both of those two different Raphael Mattinglys--ie: one was son of John Mattingly and Mary Ann Wimsatt and he would be too old...and then the other one had a dau married to Levi Underhill and that doesn't seem to fit. Shirley
I remember this Raphael also. He was reportedly Baptized on 4-12-1767 and married a Winifred and the couple had a daughter named Elizabeth who married a Quaker named Levi Underhill on 1-7-1818 in Maryland. ************** >Here is another stray Raphael Mattingly that I have in my file. John Mattingly and Mary Ann Wimsatt also had a son named Raphael but I think he was likely too old to be this one. As I recall from when I saw this on Ralph, I believe he was said to have been a student which would imply a younger man.
