The Henry Isham in the will below is believed to have died at sea. His father Henry died about two years before he died, and the Isham name as a surname in the colonies 1600s/1700s died out because the father and mother Catherine (Banks) Isham Royall only had one son and two daughters. One daughter married a Randolph and the other an Eppes. Henry Isham & Catherine Banks were ancestors of Thomas Jefferson. This was the creme de la creme of colonial VA society -- the absolute pinnacle. This is a quote from a website (http://www.royall.net/Reports/royalls.htm) on Catherine's wedding gift upon her first marriage to Joseph Royall: "She first married Joseph Royall, Sr. in England and second Henry Isham, Sr.,of Bermuda Hundred plantation in VA. She "has been described as a beautiful red-haired lady who owned a gilded carriage, the wedding gift of her parents, which is said to have been lined with gold colored silk, drapes, and cushions of the same fabric*". I am familiar with Henry Isham and Catherine Banks, because (a) my Baughs were in Henrico Co. and I have three no-surname wives, and (b) my children are said to descend from the first marriage of Catherine Banks to Joseph Royall. They have a second cousin with a very nice website and info on Catherine Banks, etc., etc. If any of you are interested the URLs are: Catherine Banks Royal Isham's will: http://www.jcsisle.com/wills.html#katherine Home page (links for families) http://www.jcsisle.com/index.html Note William BYRD mentioned in Henry Isham's will, etc. That is THE William Byrd I. My personal opinion is that Isham simply became a popular first name at some point, just like there are all these girl babies named Whitney and Taylor today, where there is no ancestral connection to those surnames. One popular surname/given name in the 1700s was also Claiborne (I've got a 5g uncle with that name, so I'll track down the connection someday, just like Isham Matlock and don't forget the Isham/Isom Choates!)
