Little help here. Is this the Col Charles who went to Georgia...? Joe Matlock >>> Sandy <sandy1@aaahawk.com> 3/14/2004 4:44:32 PM >>> Hello to everyone, I hope this finds all of you doing well, reasonably healthy and ready for spring. Thanks to the urging of an 87 year old cousin, I have spent the last two weeks (pretty much 12 hours a day!) sifting, sorting, shuffling and searching through all of the information that you all have so kindly shared in previous communications which are duly noted on the genealogy file on disk. I recently received access via TexShare to the Texas State Library and have a few tidbits to share maybe tomorrow, but for today I thought I would share this narrative that I prepared for my cousin. If you happen to see anything that you feel is in error, please let me know. Special thanks go to Jim Sims, Sheila Shannon Lawson and Susan Gillberg, but every single one of you have added invaluable information to this really e-x-t-e-n-d-e-d family. Regards, Sandy Morris (in Dallas, TX) * * * * * * * * * * MEDLOCK DESCENDANTS OF LT. COL. CHARLES MEDLOCK First Generation Lt. Colonel Charles Medlock was born in North Carolina probably around 1778 to Daniel Matlock-Medlock. From the "Encyclopedia of MATLOCK/MEDLOCKS", we know that Charles was married and produced at least one surviving son, Thomas Medlock. The date and place of Charles' death are currently unknown. Second Generation Thomas Medlock was born about 1808 in South Carolina, and he is believed to have died after 1880 in Arkansas. Over the course of his life, he had three wives and eight surviving children. Thomas Medlock's first wife was Elizabeth Dorsett (sometimes shown as Dosset), the daughter of Nathaniel Dorsett. Elizabeth was born around 1815 probably in Indiana. She and Thomas were married in 1835 in Martin County, Indiana. Children from this marriage were: Charles Medlock, born July 17, 1834 in Indiana Elizabeth Medlock born about 1835 in Indiana. There is a record in Martin Co., IN, in 1838 of an Elizabeth Medlock divorcing a Thomas Medlock. After separating from Elizabeth, Thomas is presumed to have moved toward the Missouri area where he met Rebecca Miller, the woman who would become his second wife. Rebecca was born about 1817 in Tennessee. Thomas married Rebecca about 1838 in Houston Co., TX. Children from this marriage were: "Polly" - Mary Ann Medlock, born Sept. 29, 1836 in Missouri "Dr." Thomas R. Medlock, born 1844 in Missouri or Tennessee John Copal Medlock, born Nov. 26, 1846 in Houston Co., Texas Rebecca Medlock, born 1848 in Houston Co., Texas Henry C. Medlock, born March 1850 in Houston Co., TX "Jerry" - Jeremiah Marr Medlock, born Oct. 20, 1857 in Llano Co., TX Thomas and Rebecca were still living in Houston Co., when the 1850 census was taken on October 30, 1850. By 1852 they had moved to Bell Co., TX, where Rebecca bought the land, not Thomas. The laws of the day did allow women to own property in their own name. Rebecca died in 1857. Thomas Medlock 's third wife was Amanda Bilberry born in 1835. Thomas married Amanda around 1859. Where they were married is unknown but it is known that they lived in Arkansas for a while. There is a record in Clark Co., AR, that Amanda Medlock, wife of Thomas Medlock, bought land in that county. By 1860, they had returned to Texas with their three young children and were living in Belton, in Bell Co., along with four of Thomas' children by Rebecca Miller; Thomas R., John, Rebecca, and Henry. Children from this marriage were: Amanda Medlock, Born January 1860 Gideon Medlock, born March 1868 Sarah Ann Medlock, born May 1870 In 1876, Thomas received a preemption grant for 160 acres of land in Llano Co., TX, which he had to have homesteaded for the past three consecutive years and which puts them in that area by at least 1873. Amanda Medlock died some time before 1880 but Thomas Medlock was still living at the time that the 1880 census for Llano Co., TX. was taken. He is listed on the 1880 census of Llano Co., TX, as Charles Medlock but this is believed to be a mistake on the part of the census taker. He is believed to have died in 1880, but after the census was taken. In any event, his death is documented in court records as occurring some time before June 3, 1885. One researcher who is a Bilberry descendant thinks that Thomas and Amanda and their three young children returned to Texas to be close to their families and possibly to support the family of Thomas' son Charles as Charles' health began to fail. He also believes that it is significant that Amanda bought the land, and not Thomas. Based on his research of the various wives and families he is of the opinion that Thomas Medlock had a milder form of the same medical condition that afflicted his son Charles Medlock. Third Generation Dr. Thomas R. Medlock was born in 1844 in either Missouri or Tennessee based on information contained in the US census. By November of 1846, his parents had moved to Houston Co., TX. He was still living at home with his parents in Houston Co., TX, when the 1850 census was taken and in 1860 when the Bell Co., TX, census was taken. Thomas R. married Mary Elizabeth Slover about 1868. Elizabeth, the daughter of Enoch Slover and Pauline Stotts, was born 1852 in Madison Co., AR. The children from this marriage were: "Becky" - Rebecca F. Medlock born 1869 in Arkansas "Molly" - Mary Margaret Elizabeth Medlock born Dec. 10, 1970 in AR "Bill" - William Medlock born 1876 in Texas "Wes" - John Wesley Medlock, born April 3, 1876 in Texas "Bob" - Robert Medlock, born 1878 possibly in Burnet Co., TX "Sary" - Sarah Mary Medlock, born 1880 "Annie" - Laura Anne Medlock, born March 28, 1881 Lampasas Co., TX "Emma" - Emma A. Medlock, born June 12, 1885 in Arkansas Thomas R. and his family were living in Lampasas Co., TX when the 1870 census was taken. By 1880, the family had moved to Burnet Co., TX. The 1890 census was destroyed by fire in the 1920s, and we have yet to find Thomas R. and Elizabeth on a census for 1900. In 1881, Thomas R. filed an application for Letters of Guardianship of the estate of Charles Medlock (his half-brother) in Llano Co., TX. His claim was denied when Charles' wife prevailed and was appointed her husband's guardian. In 1907 Thomas R. made application in the State of Texas for a pension for service to Texas during the Civil War (Confederate). His occupation was listed as doctor and farmer. On the application he stated that he was 69 years old (which means that his year of birth would have to have been 1838). He stated that he was living in Hamilton Co. and that his post office for the last 30 days was Vista, which was crossed out and Star written in. He said he took a cough in the war and still has it and is unable to work; that he served in Texas Co., B 17th Reg. Allens Regt. in infantry; that he has lived in Ft. Smith, AR and in Indian Territory but has been back to Wise Co., TX during the period 1880 to present; said he was a resident of Brownville in Wise Co., TX when he enlisted. No muster roll was found with Medlock's name but his application was approved. Elizabeth died before 1910 in Lampasas Co., TX. In 1910, Thomas R. was shown as an uncle living in the household of Robert H. Huffman in Hamilton Co., TX. Thomas R.'s date of death is believed to be between 1911 and 1915. He died of T.B. at his son Frank's house in McCullough Co., TX, and is buried at Calf Creek Cemetery. According to the Encyclopedia of MATLOCK/MEDLOCK, Thomas R. was a farmer but mostly traveled in what once was called a "hack", selling various goods and merchandise. According to various researchers, Thomas R. Medlock was styled as a doctor in some records. He frequently traveled between Texas and Arkansas. One researcher noted: Over the years, however, Thomas R.'s lack of significant taxable property in the historical records seems inconsistent with the expected wealth of a physician. Another researcher stated that there is a story in his family that Thomas R. was a patent medicine man and that he traveled a lot and was not a good provider for his family; that he did not serve in the Civil War but did receive a pension from Texas. Fourth Generation John Wesley Medlock was born in Texas on April 3, 1876. In 1880, he was living in his parent's home in Burnet Co., TX. Presumably, he was still living at home when the 1890 census was taken. To date, I have not found either John Wesley or his parents in a census for 1900. Old correspondence indicates that he was always called John by his parents and siblings, but as an adult, his friends and neighbors called him Wes. Wes married Ollie Vandalee Harper somewhere around 1897. Ollie was the daughter of John Clinton Harper and Amanda Elizabeth Hurt and may have been born in Arkansas. Children from this marriage were: Jesse Medlock, born before December 4, 1898 Gussie Blanch Medlock, born March 14, 1900 in Center, Indian Territory We have very little information on this family beyond several old letters and photographs that had belonged to their daughter Gussie. Their granddaughter, Aleene McCauley, says that she thinks that Wes and Ollie had four or five children but that only her mother Gussie survived. Based on correspondence and photographs, Wes and Ollie lived in Tecumseh, Indian Territory between December 4, 1897 and June of 1898. There is a photograph of Ollie taken by a photographer in Ardmore that I would date to around 1900. One photograph attests to Wes' membership in the Woodsmen of the World fraternity. Family and friends' stories attest to Wes' love of horses. Ollie died on September 7, 1907, in Center, Oklahoma, and is buried in the old Center Cemetery. Wes' second wife was Mary Iva Watson, born September 1890 in Baxter County, AR, who he married around 1908. Children from this marriage were: Albert Ray Medlock Thomas Wesley Medlock Cuba Alice Medlock Ruby Sue Medlock Shirley Margaret Medlock Mary Ada Medlock In 1910, Wes, Mary, Gussie and Ray were living in Center, Pontotoc Co., OK. According to information from Cuba Brown and an old letter from his brother, Matt Medlock , sometime between 1916 and 1917, Wes and Mary set out for Arizona in hopes of establishing a homestead. The trip apparently didn't go well and the family returned to Oklahoma. By 1920, they had moved their family to the Vanoss community and Mary's father, James Watson, was living with them. Mary and her step-daughter Gussie were life-long friends. Gussie always called Mary Maymie and eventually everyone, including her own children, called her Maymie. Around November 14, 1927, Wes and Mary were living in Sulphur, Murray Co., OK. Wes received a letter from his sister Annie Roberts who was living in Menard, TX. Wes had written to his sister Emma who also lived in Texas that he was in ill health and may have asked for help in some way. Emma had written to Annie and Annie stated that she hoped to be able to come and visit him the following summer. Just after March 1, 1929, Wes received a letter from Emma who expressed her hope that his health was improving. She wrote him about all of her immediate family and updated him as best she could on their other siblings. According to his granddaughter, Aleene, to her he was always a "mystery man" who spoke little of his family or where he had come from. As a child, she felt that he was "already an old man" when she knew him. He had diabetes and took what was then a new medicine -- insulin. Just before his death, he had decided to go to Texas to visit his sister Emma and he boarded the train from Ada, OK, bound for the Rio Grande Valley in Texas. "Apparently he got on the train but didn't take anything with him to eat. He had anticipated stopping somewhere along the way, maybe at Ardmore, OK, and eating, so he went ahead and took the insulin without anything to eat. He was in insulin shock by the time the train stopped at Ardmore, OK, and he was taken to a hospital where he died." Wes died on July 1, 1929, and is buried in the old Center Cemetery alongside his first wife, Ollie Vandalee. His small flat tombstone lies in the shade of Ollie's. * * * * * MEDLOCK DESCENDANTS OF LT. COL. CHARLES MEDLOCK First Generation Lt.
