This is how it all came together. I have been trying to locate the parents of my great-grandfather John W. (Wesley) born 11 Feb 1838 in Madison County, Illinois. According to the latest Jess Nettles Armstrong information entitled Matlock, Derbyshire, England, a notation on page 58 under James Monroe Matlock, Lewis Micajah (also listed as Micajah Lewis) Matlock found in 1850 Madison County,IL. !850 Federal Census Madison County, IL 25 Sep 1850 (parenthesis are mine) Micajah Matlock 44m Laborer North Carolina Lavina " 44f Tennessee Alfred " 20 m Illinois James " 15 m " (James Monroe) John W. 13m " (John Wesley) Mary L. 10 f " William H. 7 m " (William Henry) Francis M. 6/12 m " True to the notation on pg.58 John W. Matlock is found near his brother James Monoe Matlock in Moniteau County, MO in 1870. My John W. is found in Walker Township and James Monroe is found in Harrison Township, both in Moniteau County Mo in 1870. 1870 Federal Census Harrison Township, Moniteau County, Missouri 19 Jul 1870 Matlock J.M. 36 m Harness Maker Illinois ______ M.E. 28 f Keeping House " ______ S.L. 12 f " ______ M.L. 10 f " ______ I.N. 5 f " ______ Geo 1 m " ______ N.(?) 8 f " ______ W.H. 26 m Laborer " (William Henry) 1870 Federal Census Walker Township, Moniteau County, Missouri 21 Aug 1870. (I personally looked up these three census records). Matlock, Jno. (John W.) 32 m Farmer Ills _________ J. (Jennie) 27 f Keeping House Mass _________ V. (Violet) 5 f Mo _________ J.P. (John Perry) 2 m " (My grandfather) _________ L. (Louis) 2/12 m " According to the Encyclopedia of Matlocks, Lewis Micajah is also listed as Micajah Lewis and his father is Elisha Hosea Matlock (what is the proof of that?). Elsiha Josea is found in Matlock Encyclopedia as being born in VA 1754. Joe Matlock's post dated 23 Mar 2000 puts Elisha Hosea Matlock son of Nicholas and Mary Shelton. Can that also be verified? If it's true Elisha Hosea Matlock is older brother to Richard Matlock b. 1761 ( your direct line). Again, can Elisha Hosea Matlock's parentage be substantiated and the claim Elisha Hosea is father of Lewis Micajah (Micajah Lewis) Matlock? If the sources are accurate, I can trace my ancestors all the way to immigrant John Matlock coming over from England on the Griffith in 1675. This is the Line: Janet Matlock b. 1947 Cleveland, OH Perry Wilson Matlock b. 1917 Pedro, FL John Perry Matlock b. 1868 High Point, Moniteau County, MO John Wesley Matlock b. 1838 Highland, Madison County, IL Micajah Lewis or Lewis Micajah b. 1806 Burke County, NC living in Madison County IL in 1850 Elisha Hosea Matlock b. 1754 VA Nicholas Matlock with wife Lucy Shelton John Moore Matlock with wife Hester Watson Immigrant John Matlock b. 1638 Muskam, Nottingham, England with wife Anne Moore. Have you traced your direct lineage beyond that? I have all the details of John W. (Wesley) Matlock decendants and believe me Jess Nettles comment that "all of this group seems to have been small" is no longer true. I sure would like to hear from you regarding my findings and if it's all true, you and I are near kin. Thanks for your hard work on Shawn's site. I reported my findings to Joe Matlock, but not to Shawn. Shawn seems like he's awfully busy and Joe's going to try to locate his sources from his notes. Also look up in Matlock Encyclopedia Alfred T. Matlock, J.M. (James Monroe) Matlock, Nicholas, Deed records of Granville Co. NC and Nicholas, Jr., Elisha Hosea, Micajah Lewis and Lewis Micajah Matlock to see how I tied it all together. Quite fun. Please respond. Gratefully yours, Janet Matlock Cooper from Prescott, Arizona [email protected]
