Notes for STEPHEN MATLOCK: "Stephen Matlock died October 28,1853, leaving a large estate, which took about 6 years to settle. Co-executors were his son Stephen Matlock and his daughter, Florida's husband, Elza Tillman. Evidently, his eldest son, John, was disinherited for he was not listed as one of 7 heirs who drew lots out of a hat to decide who would inherit 7 slaves for each heir from the 47 slaves in the estate in 1854. About 1856 or 57 the disinherited son, John, went to court to challenge the way the executors were administering the estate. Later, court records reveal that Stephen Matlock and Elza Tillman, as executors had to pay $100.00 in legal fees for this law suit. I have no other information on this John Matlock and could not find him on the GA Censuses." The information concerning Stephens children came "from the 1850 Montgomery Co. I don't know who Samuel Augustine Medlock married. 2. The twins are the children of Stephen and Elizabeth Matlock as far as I know. Also Florida Matlock, dau of the elder Stephen Matlock married: 1. Lewis DeSheels,27 Nov 1845, settled in Milledgeville, GA, they had one dau, Juliette DeSheels and then Lewis DeSheels died. I have no dates for this yet. 2. Elza Tillman ( date unknown) He died in the Civil War Jan 1864 near Richmond, Fort Bend Co., TX. I will send you their children later. 3. Thomas P. Payne ( after the Civil War and before 1875). No children. She died at 63 in Milam, Sabine Co. TX in 1893. This is to clear up an error in the order of her marriages to her three husbands. Merry Christmas, Lynn Hi Joe, About 6 months ago I emailed you info on Stephen Medlock of SC. At the time I believed that this Stephen was the same man as Stephen Matlock of Tattnall Co, GA. Careful study of the 1820 SC and GA Census has proven this to be wrong. Stephen Medlock appears on the 1820 SC Census. His wife was Millie Swearingen and their children were Martha, Rachel, Moses, Samuel Augustine, and Stephen Martin. They lived in Edgefield District, SC. Stephen Matlock appears on the 1820 Georgia Census as being 45 yrs or older, with 1 male under 10, 2 females 16-26 and 1 female under 10. He lived on a large plantation in Tattnall Co. on the Altamaha River, south of Glennville, GA. In addition to the Census data, a gift deed in 1838 made by Stephen Matlock did not list any of the children of Stephen Medlock as heirs to his land. I am the great great grandaughter of this Stephen Matlock. In August my husband and I made a genealogical trip to GA and SC, visiting 6 genealogical libraries and archives. Here is the most correct data that I have compiled since I wrote to you. Stephen Matlock was born abt. 1773, probably in SC and died October 28 in Tattnall Co., GA. at the age of 80, according to his tombstone. He married (1) Mary Stanley March 5,1809, Tattnall Co. Ga. She was b. 1792 and died October 14,1837 in Tattnall Co., GA. He married (2) Mary Copeland 1838. She was b. 1817 Liberty Co., GA and d. December 30, 1847 in Tattnall Co. GA. They are all buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery on the family land in Tattnall Co.,GA, near the Altamaha River. Stephen Matlock first appears on a deed in 1788 as coming from Orangeburg, SC with John Duke to buy land granted in 2 grants: 287.5 acres granted July 1, 1788 on the Altamaha River 2 miles below Oswell's Bluff and the other being 400 acres granted Jan. 14,1788 on the same river. The other deed is dated Oct.27,1799. This may have been a contract for deed with the actual deed recorded after payment in full. Stephen Matlock was not of age in 1788, being abt 15 at the time the land was bought. John Duke is on the 1790 SC Census as being a single man, head of household with 1 teenage male living with him. I believe that was probably Stephen Matlock, who had been orphaned and that John Duke may have been his guardian or just a relative of some kind, who took him in. Later, John Duke married and moved to Georgia. On August 6, 1806 Duke transferred the land to Stephen Matlock by transfer of grantor's rights and titles. Possibly the land was bought with money Stephen inherited and that is the reason John Duke transfered it to Stephen Matlock when he was of legal age. Children of Stephen Matlock and Mary Stanley are: John, Stephen, Louisa, William, Caroline, Georgia, Florida. Mary Stanley died October 14, 1837 In a gift deed Aug 20,1838, Stephen Matlock bequeathed his land in Tattnall Co. to his children: John, Stephen, William, Carolina, Georgia and Florida. (Louisa Matlock had married in 1837.) On 26th August 1838, Stephen Matlock married Mary Copeland. The children of Stephen Matlock and Mary Copeland are Charlton H. Matlock b. abt. 1839 and Charles Matlock b. abt 1841. Mary Copeland died 30 December 1847 and is buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery, Tattnall Co., GA. Stephen Matlock died October 28,1853, leaving a large estate, which took about 6 years to settle. I have no other information on this John Matlock and could not find him on the GA Censuses. I have additional information on Stephen Matlock, son of the elder Stephen Matlock. Stephen b. 17 Sep 1821, Tattnall Col, GA and d. 13 Nov 1903,near Patroon, Shelby Co.,TX. He married Elizabeth Tillman 39 Dec 1841, Montgomery Co, GA. She was the daughter of Henry Tillman and Alef Simmons. Also, Elizabeth was the sister of Elza Tillman who married Stephen Matlock's sister, Florida Matlock. Elizabeth d. 10 Aug 1896 near Patroon, Shelby Co. TX. Both she and Stephen, the younger are buried in the Matlock Family Cemetery in southern Shelby Co, TX near Patroon, TX Children of Stephen and Elizabeth Matlock are: William Henry b. 11 Oct 1842, Montgomery Co., GA, John B. The above material came from the 1850 Montgomery Co. GA Census, the 1860 San Augustine Co, TX Census, the 1870 Shelby Co. Census and the book, Our Dead: Shelby County, Texas 1836-1964 by J. B. Sanders. It appears that Stephen Matlock lived in southern Montgomery Co., GA in a settlement known as Boxwood or Boxville where he was postmaster. Abt 1860 Stephen and Elizabeth Matlock, Elza and Florida Tillman and a number of other Georgia moved to east Texas with their slaves in a wagon train. I just wanted to clear up the mistake I made confusing Stephen Medlock and Matlock. Let me know if you have any info pertaining to Stephen Matlock in SC. Thanks Lynn Meador Hall Houston
