    3. Janet You are most welcome and Merry Christmas Joe Matlock >>> Janet Cook <[email protected]> 12/18/00 05:03PM >>> Merry Christmas, Joe! Thanks for sharing your Medlock/Matlock info. > If any of you know any of these folk or can contribute to the cause of > tying the family together please feel free to respond. I would like to take you up on contributing by sharing a small nugget or two on this Medlock line. Some of your info is different from mine, so I hope you don't mind my inserting it here. I offer it only as my interpretation of records and it is certainly not meant to be the final word. In genealogy, hardly anything is! I welcome (and encourage) corrections of my research. > Descendants of Samuel Medlock > > Generation No. 1 > > 1. SAMUEL1 MEDLOCK was born 1750 in Foreign Born, and died 1829 in Edgefield District, South Carolina. He married ELEANOR NELLIE. > > > Children of SAMUEL MEDLOCK and ELEANOR NELLIE are: I know that Elenor/Nellie was the widow of Samuel at the time of his death. Whether she is the mother of all/any of his children is unknown (by me, at least). Samuel's birth year is very intriguing. Do you know what the source might be? I've seen it as abt 1740 [DAR records] but I can find only that he was 45+ in the censuses. > i. MARY2 MEDLOCK. Mary was married to Lewis FREDERICK at the time of Samuel's land partition in 1829. [LDS film #23974: Court of Ordinary, Records of Proceedings in Cases of Summons in Partition, 1825-1839, p.45 "Lewis Holmes & wife vs Nelly Medlock, Stephen Medlock & others, 12 Oct 1829"] One other person listed in the partition was Hester Walker, formerly Hester Singleton. Since Hester's legacy was 1/7 of two-thirds and that was divided up between her heirs, it stands to reason that she was also daughter of Samuel Medlock. She married 1st, 1802, to James Singleton [NSDAR Vol. 150, p.221]. The newspaper "Georgia Journal" Aug 14, 1813 edition, shows that by Aug 1813, James Singleton of Putnam Co., GA was deceased. In 1816, Hester Singleton married John H. WALKER in Putnam Co., GA.[GRS CD #3] Heirs of Hester [from Samuel Medlock's land partition] were Leroy Singleton, Samuel Singleton, Benjamin Singleton, Elizabeth who married Lewis HOLMES and Harriett Walker. Hester died between Jan & Jul 1827 [Putnam Co., GA Extracts Vol I, Tad Evans, p.167, 176, 194]. I have not verified any of this with the actual Putnam county records as yet. This info comes from Tad Evans' newspaper books located at the Dallas, TX library. > iii. NANCY MEDLOCK, b. 1772, South Carolina; d. 1854; m. PHINEAS SUTTON. The only DAR member who descends from Samuel Medlock is from this line through Nancy & Phineas' son, Aaron. > Generation No. 2 > > 2. STEPHEN2 MEDLOCK (SAMUEL1) was born 1770, and died 04 June 1834. He > married (1) MILLIE SWEARENGEN, daughter of CPT VAN SWEARENGEN and RACHEL. > He married (2) MARY STANLEY 05 May 1805 in Glenville, Tattnall County, > Georgia. He married (3) MARY COPELAND 26 August 1838 in Tattnal County, > Georgia. Stephen did die in Edgefield District, South Carolina in 1834 but he was still married to Millie so he could not be the one who was in Georgia. [SC Archives Box #19, pkg #679, Stephen Medlock, decd. John Gomillion admx - thanks to a generous Medlock researcher for sharing this with me!] It states, in part: "Stephen Medlock died 14 Jan 1834 left a widow Milly Medlock and Van Medlock, Rachael Medlock, Samuel Medlock, Sophia Medlock who intermarried with John McVoy, Ellen Medlock who intermarried with Wilson Whatley, Martha Medlock who is now the wife [of] Brit McClendon, Moses Medlock who died 25 Sep 1831 leaving a widow and two children[,] George and Martin, Zilpha Medlock". I didn't see a son named Stephen listed. > 4. BENJAMIN J.2 MEDLOCK (SAMUEL1) was born 20 September 1785 in Edgefield District, South Carolina, and died 14 September 1874 in Collegeville, Arkansas. This is my line through his son, John Alfred and grandson, John Forsyth Medlock. I'm curious about the "J." in Benjamin's name. Do you know where that comes from? > Children of BENJAMIN MEDLOCK and JANE SWEARINGTON [SWEARINGEN-jmc] are: > i. THOMAS3 MEDLOCK, b. 20 August 1808, Benton, Yazoo County, Mississippi; d. November 1865, Tippah County, Mississippi; m. MARY JANE STENSON; b. 1820, Alabama; d. 30 June 1855, Tippah County, Mississippi. > Thomas was most likely born in Edgefield Dist, SC because obit of brother, John Alfred, states that he (John Alfred) was born in Edgefield in 1812. Benjamin & family left SC in 1818 [Fred. Swearingen registered Benjamin's slaves in Richmond, GA in Nov 1818 - NGS Qtly Vol 58, #1, p.45] Thomas married Mary Jane Stinson 2 Aug 1838 [Medlock Bible, dated 1815, in poss of Doris Haskett, Little Rock, AR, 1994 - my father's first cousin, now deceased. The bible's whereabouts unknown at this time]. > ii. SARAH JANE MEDLOCK, b. 12 March 1810. Sarah married Isaac Moore BELOTE, 2 Sep 1830. [Medlock Bible] Most likely married in Fayette Co., TN since family en in census there that year. > iii. JOHN ALFRED MEDLOCK, b. 12 January 1812, Edgefield District, South Carolina; d. 27 August 1894, Saline County, Arkansas. He is buried in the Medlock Famly Lot, Collegeville Cemetery, Collegeville, Saline County, Arkansas.; m. MARY LAURA FORSYTHE, He married Mary Ladd FORSYTH,[Medlock bible] daughter of Benjamin FORSYTH and Elizabeth LADD. [The Saline,(Saline Co. AR Gen Soc) Vol. 5, No. 4; p.152 "The Forsyth Ancestry of Mary Ladd (Forsyth) Medlock and Her Descendants", submitted by Doris Haskett] > Notes for JOHN ALFRED MEDLOCK: > John A. is shown as "Judge Medlock". According to Daniel Kent Kelso > ([email protected]) John Alfred was born in Benton, Yazoo County, Mississippi. > In 1860 this family is shown as living in Cedar Creek Township Crawford > County, Arkansas. Mr. Kelso must be confusing this family with another one. In 1860 John Alfred and Mary Ladd Medlock were enumerated in Saline County, Arkansas, pgs. 83-84, dwl 852. They were near Benton, Saline County, Arkansas. If anyone would like more info on my Medlocks, please let me know and I'll be happy to pass it along.
