    3. Hi everyone, Wow! Lots of interest and I am glad.... my own forays into the world of Melungeons is looking better and better... First of all, I wanted to be sure we all get in on this, so I am posting this reply to the list even tho Melissa sent it to me off-list. Here are excerpts of what I found on Black Dutch at Ancestry.com: http://www.ancestry.com/library/view/ancmag/2528.asp Start Your Engines: The Right Tool for the Right Search – Rhonda R. McClure ...I was asked to locate information on the Black Irish. A similar question in the past on the Black Dutch had led me on quite an adventure, so it was with enthusiasm that I began the search for the answer to the question: Who are the Black Irish? ...Black Irish Theories My research surprised me. I found that there is much confusion about the origin of the Black Irish. One theory maintains that these dark Irish and Irish-Americans are descended from members of the Spanish Armada who married into Irish families. In autumn of 1588, approximately seven hundred Spanish sailors were aboard the Felicima Armada that shipwrecked on the northern and western coasts of Ireland. A small number of those sailors did manage to make it to the coast and survive. However, there were not enough survivors to support a new interracial group—not one that would leave its mark on descendants some four hundred years later. Another theory stems from the Irish slaves who were taken to the Caribbean island of Montserrat during the time of Cromwell. The Black Irish are said to be the descendants of these Irish immigrants and the Black slaves that lived there. A possible case could be made for this theory, as the descendants that live there today are said to speak with an Irish accent. However, like the Black Dutch, the term "black" may be of American creation. The term is not used much in Ireland itself. And much of what is claimed to be known of the Black Irish appears to be primarily conjecture... Do go read through the links I sent if you are interested in this topic... there is LOTS of GOOD info out there. From the book I bought, "Melungeons, yesterday and today" by Jean Patterson Bible, the primary surnames between 1830 and 1850 are: BEAN, BOLIN, BOWLING, BUNCH, COLE, COLLINS, DELP, GIBSON, GIPSON, GOEN, GOODMAN, GOWINS, HALE, JONES, MINOR, MOORE, MOSELEY, MULLINS, NICHOLS, SEXTON, WILLIAMS If any of these families married MATLOCKS, we are on to something! More later... I don't have any information on this regarding my MEDLOCKs; however, my grandfather NEISLER always said we were part "Blackfoot Dutch". Is this the same thing? If you could tell me how to find the article, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
