I did not have the daughter Anna b. 1803 who married William Sooter in Barry County, Missouri, therefore when Luke (1766) is not shown in Humphreys county in 1860 the death is assumed. More on Sooter later. (I had all of the other named children) There is debate as to Charity Choate and given the family habit of marrying into this family in Dickson county from about this time for about the next 150 years I tend, barring evidence to the contrary, to come down on the side of Charity Choate as the wife of Like of 1766. By the way the Choate and Matlock families are still near neighbors in the county. Several of Luke's sons are in the war of 1812 including James B. Who Luke JR of 1806 marries is also of some question and has been debated before on ths list. My thought are as follows: JEMIMA ELEANOR8 CHOATE (JOHN7, SQUIRE THOMAS6, CHRISTOPHER5, CHRISTOPHER4, CHRISTOPHER3, CHRISTOPHER2, CHRISTOPHER1) was born 1810 in Tennessee. She married LUKE MATLOCK, son of LUKE MATLOCK and CHARITY CHOATE. He was born 1806 in Tennessee. Notes for JEMIMA ELEANOR CHOATE: In 1850 Jemima is living in Dickson County, Tennessee with her children E. D. and Absalom. Notes for LUKE MATLOCK: In 1850 this family is living in Humphreys County, Tennessee. His father Luke is also with them. In 1860 this family is living in Humphreys County, Tennessee. Luke senior is not shown Children of JEMIMA CHOATE and LUKE MATLOCK are: i. JOHN9 MATLOCK, b. 1830. ii. F. D. MATLOCK, b. 1832. iii. WILLIAM C. MATLOCK, b. Abt. 1833, Tennessee; d. 1912; m. MARY ANN POPPY CHOATE, 13 September 1855, Dickson County, Tennessee; b. 1841; d. 1913. In 1860 this family is living in Humphreys County, Tennessee iv. ELLYANN MATLOCK, b. 1838. v. EDWARD MORGAN MATLOCK, b. 28 March 1838; m. MARTHA SARAH TURNER, 10 December 1863, Humphreys County, Tennessee; b. 30 September 1842; d. 26 April 1909. Your census iformation for 1860 in Barry County Missouri raises an interesting point. This is, (help me I am wrong) Luke SR of 1766 his son Luke Jr. b. 1806, (and wife Jemima b. 1810 or 1813 and son Abslum b. agt 1846) , daughter Anna 1803 with husband William Sooter and family with Sooter's brother Elisha. As a further suppoort to the Sooter connection in Barry county we have EDWARD MARION SOOTER was born Abt. 1835 in Tennessee. He married MARTHA ELIZABETH MATLOCK 07 June 1857 in Barry County, Missouri, daughter of MOORE MATLOCK and RACHEL DAUGHERTY. She was born 1843 in Tennessee, and died 25 March 1909 in California. She is buried in the San Bernardino City Cemetery.. Who the Edward Lane of 1850 census of Dade county is not the question but where did he come from? He is one of the missing Luke children? He is born in the right place and at the right time. His appointment of Luke as his power of attorney adds weight. OR was he the known son of CHARITY CHOATE1 MATLOCK was born 20 June 1789, and died 20 November 1875 in Dade County, Missouri. She married BENJAMIN MATLOCK, son of LUKE MATLOCK and CHARITY CHOATE. William came to Oregon with his parents in 1853, spent his boy-hood in Eugene, Or. where he was married and later moved to Umatilla Co. near Athena. He had a large sheep ranch, always keeping about fifteen thousand sheep, which he later drove to Montana and sold in Butte. After nine years he rented out his sheep ranch & moved into Pendleton, so his children could benefit from the town schools. He soon became a leading figure in business circles. Became one of the organizers of the old American National Bank also a stockholder and vice president of the First National Bank. During the mining boom in Alaska Mr. Matlock be-came interested and established supply stores in Skagway, Dawson, and Juneau. He built breweries at Juneau and Skagway, and owned considerable mining property at Nome, which property is still in possession of the estate. He acquired much valuable property in Pendleton, the first Hotel was built with his and others cooperation, and he later owned outright. He owned the opera house block, La Dow block, hotel block, & the block adjoining the Bowman hotel. He was chosen mayor of Pendleton five different times. He represented Umatilla county for two terms in the lower house of the state legislature and for twenty years he served on the board of agriculture as president. Like his father he was fond of thoroughbred racehorses and was for many years a familiar figure on the Pacific Coast Turf. It was in 1909, while acting as president of the State Fair Board, that he was taken ill with typhoid fever, the disease leaving him in a crippled condition. Hope this is of some help Joe Matlock >>> <[email protected]> 02/12/01 10:01AM >>> I show that Luke was born abt 1766 in Probably Halifax Co Va since that is where Moore was at that time.. and He died in Barry Co Mo after 1860.. ( He can be found on the 1860 census age 94 living with his daughter Anna.. Luke More than likely Married Charity Choate...But I believe she died before 1850 Humphrey Co TN.. The Charity Matlock that is showing in 1850 and 1860 I am not sure what her maiden name is yet or which Matlock she married.. You show Benjamin.Perhaps the Benjamin that shows in Davidson Co 1840??? This is what I show so far: Can you fill in the Blanks? LUKE MATLOCK born abt 1766 Halifax Co VA. Luke is thought to be the son of Moore and Jane Powell Matlock. More than likely Luke was named after Jane's brother Luke Powell. Luke's wife name is not proven. Luke's wife died in Humphreys Co TN between 1841-1849 Luke died after 1860 in MO, possibly Barry Co Mo where at the age of 94 Luke was living with his daughter Anna. Taking the 1790 and 1820 Census readings it appears there were at least 11, and maybe more children. With out a 1810 census reading, it is hard to say exactly how many there were. There is much speculation on whose Luke's wife might be, but since the name Edward is in his family, I believe his wife was a Choate. Some believe she was Eleanor and others believe she is Charity.
