Hi Brenda and Joe - As a descendant of Joab, b. 1781 (through Steven), I am very interested in this line of discussion. As I understand it, in the 1830 Census of Lee Co, there was only Joab, George (his brother), and Patsey, the mother, listed. George could have been the father of this Joab/Joseph you have. I don't know who or when he married, but he had four children under 10 in 1830. Joseph is not a common name in the Matlock line, but I have found a surprising number of Joabs "in the neighborhood" and Sally named her eldest son Joab. Joe, I am curious where you got a date of death for Joab. I have been looking for something on that for years, and your date certainly seems plausible, since he was in Lee Co in 1850 and gone by 1860. As you may know, he was tortured and murdered, but I have never been able to find any documentation on his death. BTW, my thanks to everyone who has been participating on this list - I appreciate the thoughtful analysis.
