Dear Matlocks/Medlocks, As is always the case, a find brings more questions. A "Medlock Book" has been in this world for years--so we were told. It fell into our laps when visiting an elderly lady on another line. We had seen a mention of Julia Hunt ever so often and thought she had written the "Book". To our surprise, it was started by her father-Thomas Mason Monroe Pickens (1866-1945) who married Emma Medlock. Mr. Pickens compiled and published his own family and must have started these Medlocks at the same time. After his death, his wife Emma and his daughter Julia Pickens Hunt, added to it. We now have to give attention to this work as Mr. Pickens would have known all the grandchildren of our James Medlock (1800-1837) and Sarah Sallie Jones (1801-1882). Emma Medlock (1867-1959) was the d/o James Travis Medlock Sr. and his 2nd wife Martha James Babb (1837-1927). She married Monroe Pickens 1891. So they would have also known Martha James Babb Medlock. This Family Book is just that, not a Bible. Each page is titled Family Record. The very first page gave us hope and a very big question. Written is James Medlock m. ______? West. Nothing else. We do not know if this refers to a first wife of our 1800 James or to the father of our 1800 James. I tend to think it refers to his father. The second page is James Medlock b. 1800 m. Sallie Jones b. March 12, 1801 on April 3, 1823.Then his 6 children which we know from et al deed. He and Sallie had only one son, James Travis Medlock Sr., our line. Photos and Obits were crammd into this book with no rhyme or reason. We have spent 2 weeks sorting to some kind of order. We took a copier to this lady's house and copied for 10 hours. Then next day made 3 more copies so it would never be lost again. Just think, it was in hiding for almost 40 years. Now to my question--anybody have West in your family line? Does not have to be in SC. 1830 census is the first we find our 1800 James and it says that he was born in SC. If the West refers to his mother, they could have been from anywhere. Our 1800 James first bought land in Laurens County-1823. Also first noted on the 1830 census in Abbeville County was a much older James Medlock. Those records in Abbeville for that time period burned. We have one later West connection already. Malinda Murff, d/o Randolph Murff, married Thomas West and they went to MS. Malinda's brother,Walderman, married Elizabeth Jane Medlock d/o 1800 James. She died and Walderman moved with their 2 sons to MS. Malinda's older sister, Caty G. Murff, married Silas Medlock (1798) who we think was a brother to our 1800 James. ANy West notes out there? Thanks, Terry and Sam
