Wanda So sorry to here about you daughter!! Is she alright?? I know how it is with a grandson in the house and a teenager. MY parents' revenge for my difficulties. >From my copy of the census for 1850 I find: MATLOCK, Eleana 26, Diannah 20, Thomas FOROM 19,William MATLOCK 7, Andrew 5, Daniel 3, Louisa Jane 8/12, T T, Wh-892-134 And oddly enough living "next door" is: MATLOCK William 52, Susan 36, Eveline T. 17 James t. 22, Eleana WILLIAMS 9, Syntha 8, John F. SMITH, NC T, Wh-891-133 And from 1860: MATLOCK, E. D. 38 (m), Diannah 31, William 17. Andrew 15, Daniel, 13, Louiza J. 11, George 9. J. S. G. 4 (m), Eveline 3, Thomas 2/12, Thomas FARMER 30, Wh-147-69 MATLOCK William 62, Susan 47, Wh-149-70 Please note the inconsistencies in spelling Thomas Forom/Farmer and Louisa - Louiza. Even Diannah is spelled the way a southern tongue would give it three syllables Di - An - Nah. But who is Elkannah? I can only surmise that ELEANA and E. D. are one in the same family. I cited James and May as random examples of census takers ability to confuse the issue. "Jemima" is not the most common family name and she does not appear on the 1860 census for Tennessee. I would think that the possibilities are then that she moved, remarried and took another name, She died and the children went elsewhere or more census taker confusion. Jemima is not in the marriage records for Crawford County Missouri 1829-1855, Catahoula Parish La. 1837 - 1850, Illinois Statewide 11736 - 1900,or Stone County or Roane County or of several others. I hope you find something. If fact I can't find anybody with that name. Is Jemima a nickname or family name for something else. The Matlock - -Pettyjohn is a dead-end for my research as I have no idea who John Wesley belongs to Greenfield is Weakly County in West Tennessee, about 150 miles west of Nashville. If you have a suspect please let me know. This what I have on the Moore Matlock family in question Descendants of Moore Matlock Generation No. 1 1. As Always good to hear from you Please feel free to comment anytime Best Regards Joe Matlock JOE, GOOD TO HEAR FROM YOU AGAIN. AND HERE I AM AGAIN QUESTIONING SOME OF YOUR INFORMATION... SORRY IT'S TAKEN ME SO LONG TO GET BACK ON HERE. MY DAUGHTER WAS IN A CAR ACCIDENT EARLIER THIS WEEK AND I JUST HAVEN'T HAD TIME TO DO ANYTHING ON GENEALOGY UNTIL YESTERDAY.... STILL TRYING TO GET CAUGHT UP. WITH THE GRANDSON HERE NIGHT AND DAY IT MADE IT KIND OF HARD TO GET ANYTHING DONE.... I'LL TYPE MY RESPONSES IN CAPS AND WILL DELETE SOME OF THE OTHER INFORMATION THAT I DON'T HAVE SO I CAN'T COMMENT.... Wanda Good to hear form you again. My responses follow you comments Think you have two families together below that shouldn't be.... Jemima is not Jemima Eleanor as you have them... Census records 1850 TN, Humphreys Co, Hu-96-118; Luke Matlock, 44,TN; Eleanor 43,TN; John 19, William 16, Ellyann 12, Edward 9, Elizabeth 4, Thomas 1, Luke Matlock, 84. 1850 TN, Dickson Co, Jemima Matlock 40, E D 18, Absalom 4... Looks like Jemima is a widow. At this time I don't know who her husband was. FROM BRENDA BUT I ALSO HAVE THIS INFORMATION IN MY NOTES... 1850 TN, Humphreys Co, Hu-96-118 Luke Matlock, 44,TN; Eleanor 43 TN; John 19, William 16, Ellyann 12, Edward 9, Elzabeth 4, Thomas 1, Luke Matlock 84 Yes it appears that there should be two families. Absolom could have been dead by 1860 and ED could have left for White county, where find an E. D. Matlock living with his wife Diannah and children but they are also there in 1850 but listed as Eleanna not E. D. I BELIEVE THAT THE NAME THAT YOU HAVE FOR ELEANNA IS ELCANNA MISSPELLING FOR ELKANNAH.... WELL IF THIS IS SO.... THERE IS A WILLIAM MATLOCK THAT WAS 7 ON THE 1850 CENSUS WITH ELCANA AND DIANA. HOW CAN THE E D AND ELCANNA BE THE SAME. IN THE SAME CENSUS YEAR (1850) I HAVE HIM 18 ON THE CENSUS WITH JEMIMA......THEN YOU SAY HE IS WITH A WIFE WITH A 7 YEAR OLD SON IN THE SAME YEAR.... I THINK THESE ARE DIFFERENT PEOPLE.. MIGHT WANT TO CHECK THIS OUT..... In 1860 he is 38 years old born then about 1822. AGAIN IF HE IS 18 IN 1850 HOW CAN HE BE 38 IN 1860... THE ELCANNA AND DIANNAH ARE ON THE 1850 AS 26 AND 20 YEARS OF AGE AND THE 1860 CENSUS HAS THEM AS 31 ND 28. BUT DO NOT BELIEVE THAT THIS IS THE E D THAT IS WITH JEMIMA ON THE 1850 CENSUS. The closest Ed in the area is Edward MATLOCK (BENJAMIN9, LUKE8,) was born Abt. 1822 in Humphreys County, Tennessee. THE EDWIN OR EDWARD OF BENJAMIN WAS NOT IN TN IN 1850 I HAVE AN EDWIN BORN ABOUT 1822 FOR HIM; WHICH COULD EASILY BE EDWARD, E D OR EDWIN.. THERE IS SON OF BENJAMIN AS YOU SAY BUT HE WAS WITH HIS MOTHER CHARITY IN 1850 CENSUS IN DADE CO, MO. This is Luke 's (husband of Eleanor) brother's son and could have been living with the family. But why separate households? Maybe for the same reason that James in White county who is 11 years old and May 21 years old but show as living alone in Warren county are shown as head of house hold in the 1860 census. I HAVE THIS JAMES AND MAY AS BEING IN THE 1860 CENSUS (NOTE AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SISTLER BOOK SAYS THAT * IN FRONT OF AN ENTRY INDICATES THAT THIS IS NOT THE ENTIRE HOUSEHOLD.). I NEED TO LOOK AT THE ACTUAL CENSUS AND SEE WHAT HOUSEHOLD THAT THEY ARE IN ARE CLOSE TOO. I got the Jemima Eleanor from correspondence with Michael E. Jaguars 5 June 1999. I have not found any support yet in the Choate family material but I am still looking. AS YOU FIRST POSTED THAT E D AND ABSALOM WERE CHILDREN OF THIS JEMIMA ELEANOR AND LUKE... WELL JEMIMA WAS WITH THE TWO CHILDREN IN 1850 IN DICKSON CO E D BEING 18; AND LUKE AND ELEANOR WERE ON THE 1850 CENSUS IN HUMPHREY'S CO. THEY ARE STILL THERE IN 1860 BUT THERE IS NO E D (being the right age for Jemima's child) OR ABSALOM. I HAVE JEMIMA'S E D AS BEING BORN 1832 AND I HAVE LUKE AND ELEANOR'S EDWARD BORN ABOUT 1841.. EDWARD IS 9 AND 19 IN THE 1850 AND THE 1860. I WOULD LIKE TO SEE IF JEMIMA MATLOCK MARRIED SOMEWHERE IN MO, AR OR TN; BUT I HAVEN'T FOUND HER YET... I have him also: DAVID8 MATLOCK (WILLIAM JAMES7,) NO EVIDENCE TO POINT TO THE NAME BEING WILLIAM JAMES was born 20 October 1788 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, and died 10 March 1861 in Danville Hendricks County Indiana. He married NANCY ANGES LEE (THIS MARRIAGE DATE SHOULD BE 31 DECEMBER 1808 NOT 12 DEC 1808 )12 December 1808 in Roane County Tennessee, daughter of WILLIAM LEE and SARAH MCMULLIN. She was born 02 July 1789 in South Carolina, and died 15 November 1854 in Danville, Hendricks County, Indiana. I HAVE SOME OF THE SAME INFORMATION THAT YOU HAVE FOR THE JOHN WESLEY OF DAVID AND NANCY LEE MATLOCK.. I ALSO HAVE SOME OF THE SAME INFORMATION THAT YOU HAVE ON THE SMITH THAT MARRIED REBECCA LEVACY BUT I HAVE TO CHECK THIS... I HAVE THAT THEY MOVED TO AR BEFORE THE 1850 CENSUS.... 1. JOHN WESLEY1 MATLOCK was born 10 December 1852 in Tennessee, and died 04 January 1906 in Greenfield, Tennessee. He is buried in the Brock Cemetery in Greenfield Tennessee. He married SUSAN ROSA BELL PETTYJOHN 14 December 1875 in Obion County, Tennessee. HAVE NEVER RAN ACROSS THIS FAMILY BEFORE. HOWEVER, THERE IS AN A C MATTOX WHO HAS A SON JOHN W WHO IS 7 YEARS OLD IN SUMNER CO 1860 CENSUS.... COULD THIS BE THE ONE.... This accounts for both Smith's: SMITH10 MATLOCK (SMITH9, JOHN WESLEY8, MOORE7,) was born 1824 in Perry County Tennessee, and died 10 March 1906 in Marion County, Arkansas.. He married (1) LETSIE SHELTON. She was born in Perry County, Tennessee, and died 1862 in Marion County, Arkansas. This couple is buried in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery. He married (2) EMALINE JACOB. He married (3) HARRIET HAMM 18 April 1871 in Marion County, Arkansas, daughter of MATHEW HAMM and CAROL BRIDGEMAN. She was born 07 February 1838 in Marion County, Illinois, and died 10 August 1905. Notes for SMITH MATLOCK: In 1850 this family is listed as Mattock and in living in Perry County, Tennessee. More About SMITH MATLOCK: Military service: War Between the States PVT CSA I DON'T HAVE THE MARRIAGE OR THE CHILDREN OF THE JOHN WHO IS SON OF MOORE. I BELIEVE THAT JOHN DOES HAVE A SON 10-15 ON THE 1830 CENSUS FOR OVERTON CO... THAT IS WHERE MOORE DIED, RIGHT. NOTE: Overton Co, 1830 census: Living in the same area as Moore are William, Valentine, Absolom, Isaac, John, Landon, Thomas, Overton.. DO YOU HAVE THESE CHILDREN AS MOORE'S.... PS maybe when Brenda publishes the rest of the census we can sort this out a little better. I HAVE ALL THE 1850 AND 1860 TN CENSUS RECORDS IN MY NOTES. WHETHER THE PERSON IS TIED TO ANYONE OR NOT.. I JUST DON'T HAVE ALL THE AR OR MO CENSUS RECORDS AS OF YET. STILL WORKING ON THOSE... MAYBE ONE OF THESE DAYS... THAT'S ALL FOR NOW...
