    1. Re: [MATLOCK-L] Letter from Mrs. J. W. Tredwell, March 17, 1974, Mississippi Matlock's
    2. Joe Matlock
    3. John Good to here from you again...I knew that there had to be some one who had commented on DR. Matlock's work. As I noted when I put a copy of the chart from his work on the list, I disagree with some of his work. I begin checking your transcript of the Treadwell comments against my copy of the Dr.'s work and found that some of the comments had been taken to heart. There are dates that now agree with the notes. However I am still confused on how many family groups went to Mississippi and when. (The Treadwell notes mix the children of the groups). My current thinking (but I am flexible) is that we have two groups who unfortunately have the same names (but show me a Matlock family without a James or William). After reading through the Treadwell comments this morning I thought I would check further. Unfortunately Franklin county, Tennessee marriage records only exist before 1835 as a restoration; the originals having been destroyed. The only Matlocks listed are James Matlock to Helene Gray 13 oct 1835 and John Matlock to Eliza Williams 1832 in Salem Tn. The records of the cemetery mention in Dr. Matlock's work would be easy enough to check if they had not published and copyrighted in 1984 and are not available on line. If William Huston Matlock (14 Jan 1819 - 7 Jul 1878) who married Lucy Moore did not exits but was William Henry; then why create or remember an incorrect middle name. After all Gen. Houston's youngest sister was named Eliza...unfortunately she married a Dr. Samuel Moore 21 July 1821 in Blount County, Tn. However there is more than one Sam Houston and more than one Eliza. Blount County marriage alone list Eliza, Elizabeth and two Betsey's...so the name may well be correct but the relationship wrong. I am going to check with the Franklin County government to see if they have a list of county judges. If so checking who served should be easy. I will get back to you on that. While I am not ready to give up on the DR.'s work I must admit that it exhibits some confusion. I just called Franklin county; the cemetery records and the county court records are in the TSLA here and maybe I can get there and look it up. I will let you know what I find. If and this is a big if; if this is all incorrect then who are the people of the even earlier generations. Who is the John Matlock 1715 -1788 who married Rachel Spotswood? and further back??? thanks for the help Joe Matlock >>> "John M. Matlock" <[email protected]> 09/26/00 08:47PM >>> This is typed word for word and dates have been douple checked. Tennessee Matlock's Franklin Co., Tn. Comments by J. W. The data herein is from Wilk or other probate court records and should be reliable. ______________________________ Re. your question on the last page of Vol. 1, No. 1, of They Multiplied. Am sure you know Chas. and Isreal Matlock lived in Anson Co., N.C. at oeast as early as May, 1768. Names appear on deeds and petitions in Anson Co. Court records. They signed a petition Oct. 23, 1779, requesting the division of Anson Co. along Pee Dee River to form Anson and Richmond Co. Name appeared in many court records. The last I noticed was in 1782. Stephen Treadwell, my ancester was there at the same time - He was off into Montgomry Co. when it was formed. He was a Lt. in the Rev. War. Chas. Matlock was a Major and Col. J. W. Treadwell (Page 2) 111.3 page 2 - Continued In 1824 to 1828 a James Matlock and his brother William Matlock bought and or was granted land on Boiling Fork or Elk River and on Beans Creek, Dry Creek, Cumberland and Painted Rock. William Matlock whose wife was Mary E. sold his land in Franklin Co., Tenn. Dec. 19, 1829 but stayed in Franklin Co. untill after the Federal Census of 1830. Both William and James appear as head of household in Franklin Co., Tenn. in 1830. Soon after 1830 William and his family went to Madison Co., Miss. The first recorded purchase of land was Feb. 1832. There is a letter in the Court files of Madison Co., Miss. signed by Mrs. Mary E. Matlock, addressed to Judge Callaghan asking that her husbands brother James Matlock be appointed as Adm. of her deceased husband's estate. The files show that James handled the estate untill his death possiblt in Aug. 1836, or at least between May and Sept. 1836. Williams death occurred Dec. 19, 1832. I failed to show this when I mentioned Mary E. letter to Judge Callahan. Mary Matlock, wife of James wrote Judge Callahan on Sept. 1, 1836 that her husband James had died and that she wanted her nephew James Madison Matlock to handle her deseased husband's estate, as she could not handle it and that she thought her nephew was well able to manage it. James M. (who m. Helen Gray in 1835) bacame the Adm. of his uncle James Matlock's estate and at the same time became the Adm. of his father's estate and was appointed guardian of the minor children of his uncles James and minors brothers and sisters, except one, William Henry, who evidently stayed in Franklin Co., Tenn. Most of the time and wanted John J. Hayter to be his guardian. (Written Note: Ck. White Co. for Hayter) The Madison Co., Miss. Probate Court records are very domplete and well cared for by the County Clerk. Those in DeSota are also good. Information I have reference to the families of James and William Matlock came from these Court reco5rds and deed in addition to deed and marrage records in Franklin Co., Tenn. These records definitely fix names and dates for members of James and his brother William. James Matlock of Franklin Co., Tenn. date and location of his birth is unknown to me, died in Madison Co., Miss. about August 1836. He may have been married more than one time. His wife at the time of his death was Mary....? b. Tenn. Feb. 23, 1793, died in DeSota Co., Miss. May 4, 1858. She is buried in the Edminston Cemetery, on State Line Road, South Haven, Miss. IV.4 page 2 This James Madison b. about 1818 to 1820 was a son of a James Matlock who d. in Madison Co., Miss. about Aug. 1836. This James was not the James H. (111.3) son of William (11.1). The James M. son of James of Franklin Co. did not serve in the Civil War. He died in DeSota Co., Miss. in 1854. His father-in-law, Edmund Dyer was named adminstrater of his estate. It is possible that his widow Mary Jane is the Mary J. Matlock who married S.M. Thomas, Sept. 27, 1856 in DeSota Co. V. 2 page 3. There is not any record of a Wm. Houston Matlock, son of a James Madison, having married Lucy E. Moore. The recorded amd proven records in Franklin Co., Tenn. and in Madison Co., Miss. show that the Wm. H. who married Lucy E. Moore, was William Henry Matlock, the son of William and Mary E. ....? This Wm. H. lived in Franklin Co. and was a ward of John J. Hayter (Possibly his uncle.) before he married. (He later married). He sold everything he had even his house furnishings and went to Miss. where his brother James N. and the rest of the family and his uncle James was located. He stayed there a very short 5time before returning to Franklin Co., Tenn. where he lived out his life and had a large family. I V.3 page 3. Elizabeth Ann - dau. of James, m. Note: V.6 page 4 to VI.9 page 6, was not checked. It was noted that in each family listing that a William, a James Madison Sr. or a William Houston is refered to as ancesters. Where Wm. Houston is named, it should be Wm. Henry and where James M. Sr. is named, it should be Wm. the husband of Mary E. ...?. I would like very much to learn the names of the parents of James and Wm. brother who came to Franklin Co., Tenn. in 1824 or earlier. The earliest record I have of them are deeds for sale for land on Boiling Fork of Elk River, on Beans Creek, Dry Creek and on Cumberland Mt. at Painted Rock between 1824 and 1828. John J.
