What's IN A MIDDLE NAME Edward "LANE" MATLOCK Edward "LANE MATLOCK, supposedly named for his mothers father, Judge Edward LANE, according to Marie Matlock HARRIS. Marie also connects him to Moore and Jane MATLOCK's son, John Creswell MATLOCK . Edward brought his family to Oregon in 1853 coming across the center of the State to the little Village of Pleasant Hill. He eventually went on west past Eugene to Goshen, OR. and raised horses. His middle name "LANE" caught my attention years ago ... Could it have any connection to our Jemima LANE 2nd wife of John ELLIS, SR. parents of Ezekiel ELLIS who married Ann MATLOCK, dau. of Zachariah MAT- LOCK and Edith PAINE. Ezekiel and Ann were the parents of Elizabeth ELLIS who married Lewis RINEHART (my basic genealogical family tree for research) Lewis and Elizabeth RINEHART, starting out from Buffalo Ridge, TN., now known as Gray, Tn., went first to Morgan Co. IL. for 7 years, then on to Oskaloosa, IA. for 3 or 4 years, before moving on to Oregon in 1854 ... they settle South of Eugene. My burning question ... where and why the middle name of "LANE"? Joe in TN. suggests it may have been given to honor the LANE's who fought along side the MAT- LOCK's in the Battle of Kings Mountain. Have you noticed this battle is looming ever more import- ant on the history pages of the MATLOCK family. Some historians claim it was the turning point in the Civil War. THE TALE of TWO YOUNG WOMEN First that of Jemima Lane ELLIS L. WILKINS, a Rinehart, has traced the LANE genealogy back 20 or more gene- rations. Jemima's family: 1. Richard LANE = Sarah FULLER 1.1. John Fuller LANE = Elizabeth CLOUD 1.1.1. Jemima LANE = ( as his 2nd w.) John ELLIS, Sr. They had: Ezekiel ELLIS who m. Ann MATLOCK dau of: Zachariah MATLOCK = Edith PAINE s/o Moore MATLOCK = Jane POWELL Melba WOOD says Moore was the un- proven son of John MATLOCK = Hestor WATSON. I notice (today) he is being placed as the son of William MATLOCK, any proof yet? The second young "LANE" lady was sent in by Joe MATLOCK of TN. 1. Richard LANE = Sarah FULLER 1.2. Tidence LANE = Ester Hester BIBBLE 1.2.2. Aquila LANE = Agnes FITZGERALD (Aquila fought in the battle of Kings Mt.) 1.2.2.2. William LANE = Abigail Hewes THOMAS 1.2.2.2.2. James Tidence LANE = Quintana MOSS 1.2.2.2.2.2. Julia Moss LANE = George Washington MATLOCK [s/o 1.1.2.4.4. in the MATLOCK Journal see Shawn MATLOCKs web-site] 1.1.2.4.4. Henry MATLOCK = Nancy RICE 1.1.2.4. Abish MATLOCK = Sarah McPHERSON 1.1.2. John Moore MATLOCK = Ann SOUTH 1.1. John MATLOCK = Hestor WATSON Recently more and more Matlock's are showing up with "LANE for a middle name I wish to thank all those who have helped make the connection between the MAT- LOCK's, the ELLIS's and LANE families.
