    3. Good Morning all While furthering the search for sources for Dr. Matlock's work I found this note of interest to our African - American researchers, particularly those interested in the Mississippi branch of the family. This branch originated in Franklin County Tennessee. This short notice is interesting for as much as what it does not say to what is recorded. It does not say what the relation ship between Mary E. and William H. Matlock is. Husband - wife; father -daughter or what ever. Or is Mary the slave (most likely) John's wife? And perhaps more correctly their child and perhaps a younger sister Anne. However it does give some important information on John. He is a mulatto; a half white. Immediately below is chart for a William Matlock who is in Franklin County at the right time and has a wife named Mary Elizabeth (this is all of the information I have on this family) and they have children named John and Mary. Slaves were often give family names especially if they are born at about the same time as white children they will accompany in life. I do not have a middle initial for this William and while is born in Franklin County I show him dead in DeSoto County, Mississippi Bef 1840, however His son James Madison (b. 22 May 1811, Franklin County Tennessee; d. 1847; m. MARY HELENA GRAY, 13 October 1835, Franklin County Tennessee; b. 1811) is a life long resident of Franklin County, Tennessee. His Children are born between 1836 and 1843. Too young to conduct business. If not in this family then who? Enter Dr. Matlock's James Madison (born 1799 in Carter County, Tennessee, and died 1870 in Elks River, Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee. He is buried somewhere on the property.. He married ELIZABETH ANN HUSTON 1816 in Elks River, Winchester, Franklin County, Tennessee. She was born 1800.) Their son William Huston Matlock ( 14 January 1819, Franklin County Tennessee; d. 07 July 1878, Franklin County, Tennessee. He is believed to be buried at the old family grave yard near Elk river.; m. LUCY ELIZABETH MOORE, January 1840, Franklin County Tennessee; b. 18 January 1824; d. 19 January 1904), who is the right place and has just turned 21. The questions are then: 1. What is the relationship between Mary E. and William Huston Matlock? 2. Who are John the Slaves parents to command so high a price in the family? 3. Where do we go from here? Your comments are invited Best regards Joe Matlock FRANKLIN COUNTY, TENNESSEE PEOPLE OF COLOR Transcribed by Judy Henley Phillips The following deeds are abstracted from the Franklin County Deed Books for the year 1840. " It is a curious fact that the 3 boys, James, William, and Jefferson went to Mississippi in 1844 to claim land just out from Hernando Ms. (south of Memphis), when that territory opened up. It is believed James and Jefferson remained there, although William returned to the Elk River Homestead and eventually inherited it. However, his 3rd child, Mary Elizabeth, was born in Mississippi. The rest in TN." Notes for ELIZABETH ANN HUSTON: Elizabeth Ann is the youngest sister of General and later President of Texas Sam Huston. This information is furnished by Walter Philps by email 28 July 2000 as taken from The Matlocks of Tennessee - Especially Franklin County By Dr. John W. L. Matlock (dec).
