    2. Joe Matlock
    3. Fran Well you are half right. The names are uncommon, But the MEDLOCK family of Newton Jasper is from South Carolina and does not seemed to have migrated north. What little I have on them would seem to indicate a mirgation pattern to Georgia to Alabama where the majority still are. However based on what you sent and what I had, I believe that chart one below is a reasonable start. Both Indiana and Illinois have very good Gen Web sites with links. (ILGENWEB) and (INGENWEB). Chart two is a candidate for your David and Sarah. They are in the right state and at the right time. Good luck and let us know what you find. BETSEY JOHNSON 29 August 1839 in Bristol, Kane County, Illinois. She was born 1818 in New York, and died 30 March 1881 in Pavillion, Kendall County Illinois. This couple is buried in the Pavillion Cemetery in Kendall Township, Kendall County Illinois.. Notes for DAVID MATLOCK: In 1850 this family is living in Jo Davies County, Illinois. From Illinois Baptist Pastoral Union Illinois Baptist State Annual, 1879: Rev. David Matlock. This brother was born near Bloomington, Indiana, Feb. 16th, 1819, and died suddenly in Union County, Illinois, Sept. 2nd. 1878 in the 60th year of his age. He was the seventh son of John and Alma Matlock, who were the parents of ten children, eight sons and two daughters. All these sons, except the youngest; were men of large physical proportions and more than average mental ability. They were all men of probity and influence. The father of the deceased, at an early day, with his family settled in Kendall County, Illinois. David's opportunities for intellectual culture were limited to the advantages afforded by the common schools of Indiana and Illinois, which, at that early day, were not remarkable for efficiency or thoroughness. At the age of sixteen he was converted, and immediately afterwards he and his father rode twenty-six miles, to the nearest Baptist church, in what was then known as Yankee Settlement. He was baptized by Rev. A.B. Freeman. His was the first baptism in the waters of the Fox River. In Jn. 1851 he was licensed to preach after having undergone a very severe struggle in regard to duty. He was ordained in June 1852. He subsequently became pastor of the Baptist church in Lancaster, Wisconsin. In 1852, he received a commission from the American Home Mission Society. He has been pastor of the following churches: Argyle, Wisconsin; Payson, Warren, Jefferson Grove and Rochelle, Illinois; Lancaster, Wis. twice; St. Charles, Bloomingdale, Liberty, Otterville, Carbondale, Pavilion, in Illinois; St, Charles twice. After leaving Payson he labored successfully for a season as missionary of our State Board. His record has been blameless. His life unsulled. He was a man of large heart and sympathies; conscious of perfect integrity himself, he had no fellowship with hypocrisy or deceit in others. Bold in his denunciations of wrong, pro-slavery men and sentiments withered under his denunciations. He was also ruthlessly bitter- in his denunciations of the liquor traffic, as well as terribly severe in his attacks upon the license system. His ministerial life was eminently successful. He baptized about three hundred persons, many of them in middle life. On the first day of September he took a severe cold. The next day, which was the Lord's day, he complained of severe pain in his jaw, arms and chest, which he considered neuralgia... he was found by a neighbor, under the shade of a wide spreading oak by the wayside, lying on his face in the stillness of death.... a noble-hearted, generous minded Christian minister, an excellent godly man. At his death he was a member of the church in St. Charles. (Above article sent by Virginia Zeboski). Above David was a son of John Matlock (Sr.) of Kendall Co., Illinois from Indiana. Child of DAVID MATLOCK and ELIZABETH JOHNSON is: 2. i. MARY ELEANOR ELLA10 MATLOCK, b. 28 March 1841, Bristol, Kendall County, Illinois; d. 1925, California. Generation No. 2 2. MARY ELEANOR ELLA10 MATLOCK (DAVID9, JOHN SHEPPARD8, WILLIAM JAMES7, WILLIAM6,) was born 28 March 1841 in Bristol, Kendall County, Illinois, and died 1925 in California. She married CHARLES RULAND VAN OSDEL 01 January 1861 in Illinois. He was born 1840 in Illinois, and died in California. Child of MARY MATLOCK and CHARLES VAN OSDEL is: i. FOUR CHILDREN NOT SHOWN11 VAN OSDEL. >>> <[email protected]> 11/29/00 07:29PM >>> My grandfather, William Frank Matlock, had a brother named Newton Matlock and his father was Jasper Matlock. I haven't been able to trace Jasper Matlock except he had been in Illinois 13 years when he died in 1879. He came from Indiana. I wonder if my Newton Matlock and Jasper Matlock have any connection with the Newton Jasper Medlock that Joe Matlock keeps mentioning. It rings a bell but ... DavId MATLOCK married Sarah MATLOCK, they were both born in Indiana and had 8 children (this is not verified). One of their sons, Jasper Newton MATLOCK married Nancy Helen Nation on December 23, 1874 in Charleston, Illinois. He was born in Morgan County, Washington Twp, Indiana, in March 1852. He died September 8, 1879 in Charleston, Coles County. I have a copy of the obituary and a copy of the death certificate (the death certificate has very little information on it). His wife, Nancy Helen Nation was born December 11, 1851in Indiana (town unknown). She died Spril 23, 1927. She and Jasper had three boys, one of whom, David, died in infancy. The other two were William Franklin Matlock (my grandfather) and Newton L. Matlock. After Jasper died, she remarried and had a daughter, William Franklin Matlock was born September 07, 1875 in Charleston, Illinois. In a census record and a couple of other data, it showed that whoever entered the name, crossed the "l" in Matlock at the same time they crossed the "t" making the name appear to be Mattock. Frank, as he was known, died on June 1, 1953. Newton L. Matlock was born April 3, 1877 in Charleston, Illinois. He died March 28, 1945 David a. Matlock was born 1879 and died in 1880. I have very little information other than what is listed above. I THINK Jasper came from Indiana since the obituary said so but I don't know how to find records in Indiana. If anyone connects with this name, let me know. He came from Morgan County, Washington Twp, Indiana. My Newton and Jasper Matlock were born at different times from your Newton and Jasper but they MUST be connected to the same family mine was. The names are too similar to ignore, I think. Fran
