I am referring to Jamie GIBBIONS letter/chart of Sun 6 Aug 2000 ... Moore MATLOCK, Sr ...... or 1.1. 5. in my Journal [[[son of John MATLOCK III and Anna Elizabeth SOUTH ... this I question ....... WSB]]] m. Emily Jane POWELL dau. of Edward POWELL and Elizabeth RANSOM dau of James RANSOM and [[[Amy DAVIS .... this I also question for now ..... not enough evidence and what I have is confusing ...... WSB ]]] ( near as I (WSB) can tell, James RANSONE/RANSOM son Of Richard of Brunswick is about as early a RANSOM as I can find ... he may be the great grandfarher of Gen. Matthew RANSOM . {{Note ... quoting from a letter by ...... Capt B. N. COLLINS of Ridgeway, NC. a "James RANSOM came to this country some time in the latter half of the 18th century from Virginia, (I think he had been a merchant in Richmond) and married the widow MACON, whose maiden name was Priscillia JONES, dau. of Edward (Robert?) JONES. Seymour RANSOM, was a son by that , marriage. I have heard that Seymour RANSOM was a very accomplished man for his time. I have known numerous descendants of him, but I think there are none who bear the name of RANSOM, excepting the families of Gen. Matthew and Robert RANSOM." ) James RANSOM moved to Warren Co. North Carolina, m. in 1763 (date of marriage bond in Greensville Co. Pricella JONES daughter of Edward JONES and widow of Gideon MACON. This James RANSOM was grandfather of Gen. Matthew RANSOM of NC (Peter RANSONE, the ancestor of the RANSONE, or RANSOM, family in Virginia, first settled in Elizabeth City Co. which he represented in the House of Burgesses in 1652. It appears he left 3 sons; 1. James, 2. George and 3. William. Here again we have a difference in names .. yet I find the names are used back and forth same as do the Matlock's and the Medlock's ... BUT I quote from one observer: " It is a mistake to suppose that the RANSONE and RANSOM families are the same. They were entirely destinct.) Again I am copying/quoting ... and wondering .... 1. James RANSOM made his will in Surry Co., which was proved Oct 15, 1740. It names daughters 1. Catherine, 2. Mary and 3. Elizabeth .... names sons 4. Gwathney and 5. James. ???? Is this 3. Elizabeth RANSOM the one that marries Edward POWELL ???? Son 5. JAMES RAMSOM m. Amy DAVIS and had: 5.1.Richard, b. 1752 and 5.2. Seymour and other children [[[ In the will of Seymour POWELL, dated 18 Dec 1780, recorded in Greenville Co. VA April 6, 1781, Seymour RANSOM is mentioned as his godson ........ Is this a descendent of Elizabeth RANSOM and Edward POWELL ????? ..... ]]] By now are you as confused as I am or can you help clear this up for me ???. You Marlock-list members have helped in the past so I am counting on you again. Moore MATLOCK and Jane POWELL, had all sons as far as I know ... eight, with some given just as possibles. Jamie GIBBIONS lists ten children ... one a daughter ... Jane Powell MATLOCK, born in Roane Co. TN all the boys are born in Halifax Co. VA I will leave it here for now ...... I do want to mention that Jamie has one son listed as JOHN WESLEY MATLOCK b. 1760, Hailifax Co. VA .. d. 1820 in MO married Margaret .... in 1782 See 1.1.5.3. John MATLOCK in the "JOURNAL" 1.1.5.3.1. John Caswell MATLOCK possibly lived in Maryland, Virginia and NC m. Mary (Polly) MERRICK 1.1.5.3.7. John Wesley MATLOCK b. 21 Oct 1832 and d. 5 Apr 1891 m. Elizabeth B. FLOWER, 18 Oct 1848, TN (This is why we need an index that works. we have so many John's and John's spreading over generations and localities)
