    3. Hi PaulaHere is a chart to help get you started. As you may now by now we have a DNA project going on with the family. Your William is as best I know Charle's only proven son and so a lonely link to Richard and earlier. If any of your male relations with the surname would submit the DNA sample it would help us all out a lot. Good LuckJoe Matlock Que is my 5th cousin 3 times removed Carlyon Sue I do not know if this will get through to Paula or not so if not please pass alongJoe MatlockFrom: mattrack (Original Message)Sent: 8/4/2004 4:16 AMOK I am fairly new to all of this.. I think this is how my family line goes. James Ransom Matlock, Que Matlock, Roy Matlock Sr, James Matlock then me Paula Matlock. My grandpa Roy Matlock Sr. just passed away thursday of last week. Guess I am just looking for information on my family. Descendants of Charles Matlock Generation No. 1 1. CHARLES8 MATLOCK (RICHARD7,) was born 1810 in Hawkins County, Tennessee, and died Bef. 1833 in Jackson County, Indiana. He married ELIZABETH HAGGERTY. Notes for CHARLES MATLOCK:From: "Jana Black" <janab@websweweave.net>To: <MEDLOCK-L@rootsweb.com>Date: Monday, December 15, 2003 10:44:32 PMSubject: RE: [MEDLOCK] DNA Hi all, A bit of background on this line, FYI: ...No census records have been found for 1810 and 1820, but in 1830, Richard lives adjacent to sons Charles and Loving. Both boys are grown with wives and children: Charles has 5 girls and four boys - it is from this line that William Robert, our proved ancestor is believed to descend, so this is the line we are focused upon. In Jackson County, IN, 1833 court records show that both Charles and Loving have died. The children of Loving are mentioned, but there is no mention of Charles wife or children and it is unknown what happened to them. Oral tradition in our line has it that wife #1 was Indian and that our William Robert was the logical son of Charles shown as the "1 male under 5" who was raised by David Matlock who went to Van Buren, Iowa and is sometimes identified as Wm. Rbt.'s uncle or brother. We know that he was a grandson of Richard Matlock, born about 1761 in Granville, N.C. but we still are not sure which of Richard's sons was his father. Some still say it was William Matlock, born 1810, Hawkins County TN and some say it was his brother Charles. If anyone out there knows anything about this and can help us settle this once and for all, please kindly place a followup in this forum. Thank You, Carlyon Sue McKinney In 1880 this family is living in Franklin County, Alabama. From: janab@websweweave.netTo: "The Matlock Family" <TheMatlockFamily@groups.msn.com>Date: Tuesday, December 16, 2003 3:49:12 AMSubject: DNA study on WM. Rbt's line???From: janab1949 Hi all, I am writing you all as it seems you have a "vested interest" in where my thinking is going <G>. Please bear with me as I ramble a bit over what we know and what we do not know.... the big *hole* in our genealogical research tracing the ancestry of our William Robert Matlock involves proving #1 that he is the son of Charles and #2 proving that Charles comes from the 1st wife of Richard.... I went to Brownstown IN this fall and found ONLY yet another reference to the claim (unproved) that the children of Richard by wife #1 were all born in South Carolina, before they went to Hawkins, TN - what is frustrating, is that so far, our line does not connect into any of the Matlock/Medlocks shown in the 1800-1830 SC censuses. There has always been a "rumor" that Richard's first wife was Indian - and we all know that state lines were changed over and over in those early days - all of which makes our job harder. In those days, many folks would not have "broadcast" such info, but today, I just bet there are others of you than me who would love to know, then brag <G> about such a heritage! Natch, the fact that Richard may not have wanted folks to know about his liaison to an Indian maiden likely means there is little recorded about it.... I would love to figure out what her ID was once and for all! Next, I would like to identify the name of Charles wife and his other children besides William Robert then find out what happened to them all.... The idea that Charles and "unnamed wife" plus nine children show up in the 1830 census in Hawkins County, TN, then that Charles is suddenly dead 3 years later and that the wife and children appear to have all vanished off the face of the earth tells me we have a story to uncover! We know that Loving's eldest son went to Amos Poore, but what the heck happened to Charles wife and children other than our William Robert??? Did Charlesd and Loving die together??? Was our William Robert the only survivor in a family of nine children? There were no epidemics in IN between 1930 and 1833, I checked. Whatever happened must have been the result of an accident or violence..... FYI, I also drove up to "Weddleville" and passed thru it twice before I realized I has "seen" it - all that is there now is a burned out schoolhouse and a few tumbling gravestones - our folks lived in an area that was extremely hilly and remote - if they went to Brownstown to court, they went as a group. It got dark before I could find Carr Township, and I was traveling alone, so I "chickened out" and drove back down the hill before I really got lost! Keep in mind that the estate of Charles Matlock was administered by Matthew Tanner then his son Samuel (after the senior Tanner's decease). Matthew Tanner entered into bond with Jonah F. de Bolt and Andrew Gilwick to adminster the estate; Samuel Tanner entered into bond with Daniel Peck and Adam Miller. The estate was not settled until 1837. Involved in the probate with claims against Charles estate were people who were all married to Weddles; Guthries, Loudermilks, Poores., etc. I doubt this is co-incidental. Any names in these documents are clues, but so far, I cannot find paperwork to get us any further than we are..... It would also be nice to establish or emiminate whether or not William Robert was raised by David Matlock in Iowa and whether David was Charles brother or uncle.... We can come much closer to all this with DNA results.... I hope many of you know that some of the members of our mailing list on Rootsweb initiated DNA studies on some lines of the family last year??? The results are beginning to be posted. I see from the DNA charts that two of the SC families have had DNA studies done. That will make it easy for us to either "match" or not.... We are lucky in that we have contact with members of the descendants of Richard's 2nd wife, Mary Weddle. I am thinking it is tinme we added "tissue" from our line to the Matlock DNA studies to see what we come up with. You can view the work so far here: http://www.ba044ancestry.com/Matlock/DNA%20RESULTS.htm and here: http://www.ba044ancestry.com/Matlock/DNA%20FAMILY%20TREES.html Looking at the info that has been accumulated so far, if our "hunches" are correct, we ought to have DNA similar to Joe Matlock's line: http://www.ba044ancestry.com/Matlock/JOE%20MATLOCKS%20line.html (his line is #14482). In order to see what we have, we need cheek tissue from sons of sons..... In our line, that means sons of either James Ransom, George (Mac) Mc Clellan, Charles William, David Henry or Robert Orlen. Since we can prove our lines TO William Robert, whatever DNA results we get back from any sons (or gsons or ggsons or gggsons) will suffice for our female lines. Since I am the ggrand daughter of a daughter, I cannot do this thru my own line. I am certainly willing to "kick in" $$$ to help pay to get this work done. I hope some of the rest of you are also willing - if we each chip in a little, that $$$ will add right up! To proceed, we need to figure out which of the "guys" are willing to let us swab their cheeks for tissue! Would you all put on your thinking caps and put together a list of which men we can contact who are sons of sons of sons???? It costs $200 for a test. I figure we need two tests, one from our line and one from the line of Richard with Mary Weddle.... So we should try to collect $400 total. I am pledging $100 right now! Put in $1 if that is what you can afford or put in whatever else you think you can manage. If enough of you are interested and if we can find enough "guys" to get two cheek samples, then we can get the details on where to send the money and the cheek swabs. I will be happy to act as the "organizer" here - so email me or the group and I will keep you all posted. As always, whatever we learn will be shared freely! This is our heritagre (if ever we figure it out <G>)! Let me know what you all think? I figure this could be one of the best Christmas gifts we could give ourselves.... Look forward to hearing!
