Joe, I have a note that this William was of Buncombe Co, NC. I have him son of James. Would love to find something to prove that. The James might be son of Nicholas and Mary Shelton. Who was in Burke Co, NC in 1790 Anyway William was married to MARRIAGE: (1)William Matlock married Ruth Rockhold, 17 Apr 1817; Carter Co, TN (2)William Matlock to Susan Manafee 7 Jun 1845 White County, TN. Have as Children: Elcana D. , James T. and Eveline. Elcana was in White County 1850 and 1860. His wife Diannah 'Diana' is still there in 1870. James T. no information. Evelint T. Married James Cook 11 Mar 1851 in White County. The father of William has not been proveen. Just speculation on my part.
