    3. Wanda good to here from you again. Thanks so much for all of the work you and Brenda and all of the others have done in transcribing the census records. John Caswell Matlock, known as "CAS" died in 1826, at least the John Caswell who married Mary Merrick and lived in Benton County, Tennessee did or else we have a body in the wrong grave. MATLOCK, Cas MATLOCK, Mary Born Nov 10, 1786 Born Mar 10, 1790 Died May 10, 1826 Died Oct 18, 1857 (Rock Broken) (Stone Broken) There is some confusion in the early records: "John Caswell Matlock died 10 May 1826 according to his tombstone. It has been argued that he died 10 May 1836. However, his widow Mary Matlock is listed in the Humphreys County, Tennessee census, taken in 1830 on page 322. She had two sons and one daughter living in her home. An inventory of his assets and a sale was held 15 February 1836 in Benton County, Tennessee. Those who question the death date of John Caswell Matlock also claim the date of the sale was entered in the records erroneously and that it was held 15 February 1837. However, the entry was made among other records of February, 1836. There has been no evidence presented that John Caswell Matlock did not die on 10 May 1826 and that the sale of his estate was not held and recorded 15 February 1836. John Caswell (Cas) Matlock was buried near his home in what became their family cemetery on the banks of Eagle Creek. Mary Matlock died 18 October 1851 leaving a will dated 1 October 1851. She was buried by her husband in their family cemetery". Submitted by E. J. & Frances Sims John and Mary's son was: John Caswell Matlock, Jr. born ca. 1809, married Mary Barnett and died ca. 1850 in Dade County, Missouri (?). (He also names a son "Caswell"). The Benton County, Tennessee Census listing for Mary Barnett and her children is the family of John Caswell JR. Then who is John Matlock age 75 in 1850? John Caswell of 1786 has a brother John Wesley of 1759 who has a son Caswell Matlock whose birthday I do not know. Could this be another "John Caswell" who if born in 1775 whose father was then 16? Then who is this?: MATLOCK, John W. (Mason) Born Nov 10, 1786 died Apr 5, 1891 If the birth day is correct then he is a twin to CAS and 65 not 75 in 1850 and very much alive. The J. W. Matlock listed for 1860 is only 37. Old John W. is not listed for Benton County. I think this is the John W. who married Elizabeth Flowers and his birthday should be 21 October 1823. As to his father being Luke Sr. my mind is open but I have seen or at least do not remember seeing any reference to it. Again thanks for the census work!! Joe Matlock >>> "Wanda R" <[email protected]> 06/06/01 06:26PM >>> Joe, I know that you have posted many times this line. But you have that John as John Caswell. But it appears by this listing that they were twins: Caswell and John. Or did the person typing this type it wrong. I had remembered that you had Merrick as wife of John with Rachel as mother. So is this the John that is 75 the one that you thought had died in 1826. 1850 MATLOCK JOHN Benton County TN 279 No Township Listed M C Barnett 38 WM Farmer TN Mary 38 WF TN Lamartin 17 WM TN Augustus 8 WM TN George 9 WM TN William 5 WM TN Mary 2 WM TN John Matlock 75 WM Farmer TN Did John died at 105 year old? Wow... Just wanted to know what you thought. I created a file for Matlock's on my PAF program and I am now since the 1870 census are done trying to piece some of these families together. Wanda
