Hi Sherill There were several members of the family in army and in the right unit to have been the "Matlock " Jackson spoke too. (His "whites of the eye" advice is borrowed from MG Warren at Breeds Hill). Do you have anything other information that specifies Smith as the one? I would love to pin this down. Joe Matlock >>> "Sherill de Carrico" <[email protected]> 06/13/01 02:00AM >>> Hi Joe.. I didn't quite understand your message about Smith. According to his military records and Elly's pension request from the Nat'l Archives he served from Sept 28, 1814 to April 27th, 1815 in Capt. Joseph Williams Co., TN Volunteer Mounted Gun-men, brigade of Brigadier General John Coffee. He was at the battle of New Orleans Jan. 8, 1815. Smith is my ggggrandfather. It would be neat to think that "Old Hickory" had spoken those words to him. But I'm satisfied to know he was in that battle ( even though it was two weeks after the war had officially ended) and was part of building our nation. Hurray for the Matlock's........ Sherill Matlock - de Carrico This most interesing but Smith was not the only in the War of 1812 nor who could have been at New Orleans. If only Jackson had bothered learn first names. To MATLOCK, Andrew Jackson said at the Battle of New Orleans, 'Not yet, MATLOCK, wait until you see the whites of their eyes!' MATLOCK was anxious for the fray and ready to shoot when the General laid his hand on MATLOCK's shoulder and gave him the order...." Coooooooooool?????!!!!!!!
